Have you ever tried to box 3x3 minutes at amateur level??
My lungs were splitting..after two rounds and I was in shape..
Don't buy it..
Yes, "round" is a shape.

An in shape Tim in 87 would have been a good test for Tyson!!
Don't know too much about Tim or how good he cold have been.
Always hear how he was treated appallingly by Don King and that seems to have had a major demotivating influence on his career.
Just for comedy, Montell Griffin's title defense against RJJ didn't go to well
Witherspoon was a good infighter, and as Smith, Thomas , Tillis, Green all showed Tyson wasn't really one for fighting his way out of the clinches- he was devasting at short -mid range, but not as an infighter in the mould of a Duran. Would have fancied him to beat Tim, but having been made to work for it - similar to the Thomas fight

Witherspoon had a rock jaw too.....Smith caught him cold...
All about Witherspoon getting over Tyson's speed and getting into the fight.

Spinks vs Ali II, Ali had next to nothing left in that fight but Neon Leon just didn't have the strength of will to cope with being champion and was all over the place by the time the fight came around.

At least I wasn't imagining it! Why does every thread discussing the Muslim faith get removed?

Two more recent Heavyweight titlists to throw in there; Ruiz and Valuev who, between them, somehow managed to share the WBA belt for the best part of a decade with only small interruptions here and there.
I can forgive Ruiz the defeat against a former Middleweight in Jones, as Roy was still very moile weighing 193 lb and had such a big speed advantage. But an out of shape (that's being kind, as outright "fat" would be more accurate) former Middleweight in Toney, with a lot of miles on the clock and heavy legs, made him look clueless as well. Watching Ruiz fight was a truly horrible experience, made even worse by his cornerman Norman Stone, one of the biggest clowns in the sport.
And then there's Valuev. Oh my Lord, Valuev! Made to look meek by a relative Heavyweight dwarf in Chagaev, only just squeezed past a nigh-on decrepit Holyfield in one of the worst winning performances in Heavyweight title history and was then shown up for exactly what he was against Haye - just a big lump who is hard to shift. Even lumbering oxen like Willard (big right hand) and Carnera had some kind of weapon in their arsenal. What weapon did Valuev have apart from being a man mountain?

I suspect it's because some people lack the intelligence or ability to debate the issue reasonably without resorting to cliches, stereotypes or deliberately inflammatory rhetoric....I'm talking about the Irish, Welsh and Scottish posters mainlyDuty281 wrote:At least I wasn't imagining it! Re: Worst performances by defending Champions ????
Anyone care to plump for Carl Froch against Ward? Lacked a plan B (even though that wouldn't have worked either) and seemed to operate on the belief that if he did the same thing over and over again Ward would eventually get bored and let him land a punch.
What about Froch this weekend...after all the hype and bluster, what's the possibility that this "warrior" ends up being completely out-thought and out fought?
** Just been reading some excepts from news articles where Froch criticises Groves and Cleverley and I'm afraid he's begun to sound like a massive tool. Wish him well but have to say he's done little to endear himself to me these past few days **

Re: Worst performances by defending Champions ????
Well Froch was made to look pretty average and a bit one-dimensional against Ward for sure, I agree up to that point Dave. But on the other hand Ward put in an excellent performance and even showed us a few new bits and bobs which we might not have all been aware of before, like how strong and able he was on the inside once Froch did temporarily get him in the "trenches."
If the winner is in really good form like that, then I personally find it hard to call the losing performance a particularly bad one. That's why I tend to go for fights in which the winner wasn't anything special, but where the loser was even worse (ala Tubbs-Witherspoon) or where a fighter only just scrapes by someone who they really should have dominated (ala Valuev-Holyfield).

Re: Worst performances by defending Champions ????
I agree that Ward's superiority does tend to cloud the issue as to whether Froch was poor or just made to look poor. It's to be hoped they have a better gameplan this weekend. Calzaghe struggled in the early rounds but then adapted and showed his class. I'm not convinced Froch is in that league or has the ability to change tactics mid-fight. Still, he does like to make a mockery of my predictions so whose to say he won't do it again?

Re: Worst performances by defending Champions ????
Froch-Ward was more a case of Froch being outmatched by a vastly better opponent. I don't think any kind of performance or gameplan would have made a difference.
I wouldnt consider it a poor performance by Froch anymore than I would consider Robert Guerrero's performance against Mayweather a poor one.
A bad performance for me is more when a superior boxer gets beaten by a lesser opponent because they overlooked them or if the defending champion just simply didnt put any effort into the actual fight.
Morrison-Bentt would be an example of the former while Seldon-Tyson is an example of the latter.

That's the problem with people like ward Chris. Not real warriors.
When you've spent your life in the trenches like Carl, you get slowed down by trench foot. Fancy dan's like ward, can hop in and out of the trenches, because they're not throwback fighters, not real men. It's borderline cheating really.
