PICK YOUR TWO FAVOURITE SONGS
Music Cup Round 4 - Britpop
First topic message reminder :
Round 3 is in the books and Marvin Gaye came out on top of Elvis Presley and Don McLean.
Round 4 promises to be a fierce affair, the array of familiar songs I personally could select is staggering. Although clearly Britpop isn't to everyone's tastes. Poor Union was so befuddled by it all he's sitting this round out meaning he adds a 4th 0 to his score.
Go forth and vote (for your favourite TWO).
Round 5 will be a corker because you'll all be selecting songs by your favourite boybands. Before you ask, The Beatles are not a boyband. The Rolling Stones are not a boyband.
NOTE: A boyband is a group of two or more male vocalists that did not play instruments themselves and went under a silly alias like 911 or A1.
Why would you do a round of boybands only on a mostly male forum based around sports, I hear you ask? Because it'll amuse me to get PMs from grown, often professional working men, filled with their favourite song by 5ive.
Reasons for some of the choices from the good folk who selected them:
song 2 by Blur please - When that killer "woohooo" kicks in, everyone recognises the song and starts moshing. Iconic and defined the whole era.
3) Take That- Relight My Fire
Not as good as new and improved Take That but utterly passable.
One of the most under-rated bands in my book. Should have been a 'Big 3' with them joining Oasis and Blur. Everyone knows their songs from the Different Class album. This is one of their earlier numbers, and one of their best.
Alright - Supergrass ..................... A great summer anthem of a song that was everywhere , and that video got me out on my bike with my mates for numerous drunken pub crawls around the countryside around here .
1st choice - Whatever by Oasis. Not only is it Oasis's greatest song, but it is the best song ever written ever. Ever. EVER!
Charmless Man. During the 90s I was always an 'Oasis Man' out of them and Blur. Since then though I have realised how much I prefer Blur's music.
Common People - Pulp; She came from Greece, she had a thirst for knowledge. Sing along godammit! Geek chic 20 year before its time. Whilst everyone was embroiled in the Blur v Oasis battle, the real Britpop band just got on with creating anthems such as this. Jarvis Cocker, we salute you!
After Hours write up - Not your typical in your face Britpop song, neither the over the top attempts at ballads Oasis did. Listen to it before you vote, its a class song. And Edgar Wright (of Hot Fuzz, Spaced and Shaun of the Dead fame) directed the video.
Any song that contains the line "Strap on Sally chased us down the alley, We feared for our behinds" deserves to win this round! Also has a great guitar intro and a catchy chorus.
Reason: When a list is made of the best songs of the 90s, You Get What You Give shouldn't be missed out. It's a class song by a band which disappeared after releasing it but were totally underrated.
Elastica - 2:1 - had to use the wikepedia link to see which groups count as Britpop & was ecstatic to see that I knew a few, recognise this song from the Trainspotting soundtrack which is enough to earn plaudits on its own

For example, Take That are a boy band but Gary played Piano - so do they qualify?
Did Gary play piano in their old stuff? It's song by song basis surely, so it would depend on the song?

Does boy band mean British? Cos I went for N Sync! I expect to get no votes but my own this round but I truly believe it is the best song on the list so I don't care for your valiant, self defacing nonsense!
Disappointed by the Blur and Oasis picks. I was going to go for Tender or Half the World Away but The Bluetones get nowhere near enough respect. Least no one did Three Lions and claimed Lightning Seeds counted as Britpop. Life of Riley is another sore miss from this list.

Chris, I think most of us see britpop as a genre, that isnt neccesarily British pop. Just from a time and a certain style(its a beatles influenced genre from the late 90's!)

Hate The Beatles. Rubbish.
Most of the best brit-pop you'll never have heard of, and I like it that way. Same with all music, once it gets in the public domain, it's ruined.

Once anything gets mainstream it becomes ubiquitous and cliched. Bands, like comedians can be good to start with, but give them a bit of fame, exposure and money, and they lose the edge that made them good in the first place. Plenty examples of good bands that went rapidly downhill.

I agree with you Sr. Music from bands that become popular can go down hill. However it should ditract from the original music that was made.

I expect oasis lost a few fans, after Definitely Maybe. Morning Glory was a great album and for me better, but not quite as edgy as the former.

I meant for the next weeks picks, not this, I wanted to know if boy bands meant British culture or worldwide? Britpop is much more easily defined as a mini genre. I get Britpop, I've never had a choice but to like it as it pierced my youth.
You shouldn't dislike something because it went mainstream, especially after the event. Makes no sense for the stuff you like to remain supposedly hidden as it can't destroy the artist now. Bluetones rarely get mentioned by my younger or slightly older friends when mentioning Britpop, I'd say they are just outside the mainstream without being hidden either.

Still like the old stuff of a lot of bands, new stuff is as dreary as U2 from a lot of bands though.

Very surprised Don't Look Back In Anger is winning this. I am a massive Oasis fan but DLBIA is not even the best Oasis song on this list let alone best Britpop song.
Charmless Man is a great record, very underrated.
I would have liked to have seen some more James on there. Laid is a great track as is She's A Star.
Would have liked to have seen more Suede and Ocean Colour Scene up there too.

Supergrass and Cornershop. An awful round anyway, I hate all this britpop stuff.

There was some great stuff by the likes of Slowdive, Pale Saints, Wedding Present, Stereolab, Electronic, Boo Radleys, Geneva, Hurricane #1, Idlewild, Ride and Shed Seven. Rarely gets a mention though.

SR most of us are targeting the audience. My first pick in round one got zero votes. Since then I had to re think tactics!!
However those bands you mention are not exactly britpop bands anyway bar maybe the boo radleys and shed seven.

They did, but deserve a point for naming themselves after a character in the greatest book of all time.

I cannot disagree more. This can be the case, but bands have also improved with fame and exposure, the same with comedians, films, directors, actors, books, everything. And say things are cliched is such a cliche (and one that I loathe, and yes, I get the irony of that statement).

Anyway, The Great Gatsby KO1 To Kill A Mockingbird. In my own opinion. Although I love both books.

Even if they are books taught in colleges or schools it is because they are so great.

Yep, this.
There is not a single thing wrong with To Kill a Mockingbird. It remains the only book I have ever read more than once.
Anyway, back to music.....

I found it a very boring book, I think people get a bit caught up with it because of the subject and they feel they are being "right on" by claiming it's one of their favourites.

Would have to disagree. I'm just the type of miserable b'stard that loves pouring scorn on people's favourite books/films/songs etc but To Kill A Mockingbird is a work of genius - slightly ahead of The Grapes of Wrath.

The Great Gatsby is probably the most overrated book every written, the fact that it's ever considered one of the best books ever is baffling, barely anything happens, it's unbelievably tedious and boring and for me doesn't even capture anything particularly well.
