Davie - Listen to "You Love Us" by Manic Street Preachers and tell me how that's not a punk song??? The category is "punk song" NOT "song from a punk band" - open your mind.

People need to actually watch the videos before voting. No, the prodigy isn't a punk band, nor manic street preachers, but it's the actual songs that we are voting for. I've listened to all of the links and in my opinion they are all punk songs, so actually watch them before making judgments like that.

Re: Music Cup Round 8 - Punk!
I was questioning more the era than the band themselves.
In MY opinion (and it is only opinion), punk was the period from 1976 to the early 80s
Something like Monkey Wrench by the Foos could potentially be described as punk-style but in my opinion it wouldn't fit a punk poll. Same goes for MSP

So a song can't possibly be a punk song unless it was made in those 5-8years? Are bands not allowed to make punk songs after this era?

Re: Music Cup Round 8 - Punk!
I'm not saying they're "not allowed". That would be silly.
I'm just saying that IN MY OPINION, punk was more than just a style of music - it was a sign of the times and encompassed far more than just minimal musicianship and snarled vocals

Re: Music Cup Round 8 - Punk!
Ahhh, another round, another row with Davie.
You forget that some of us weren't born in the era you suggest and whilst i appreciate the work of bands like the Ramones, Buzzcocks, Dead Kennedys and The Clash this is about what we consider our favourite tracks.
For me, and my era, Basket Case is my favourite Punk track, and it comes from an album that probably revolutionised mainstream punk in the 90's, as well as a few other notable classics like Longview and Welcome to Paradise.
I also voted for the MSP as it's a brilliant song.

Not a row KB - just comments.
Or should we just vote and keep quiet?
I guess as many of you weren't born during the true punk era we can kiss goodbye the hope of maybe a Rock and Roll round.
Seems a strange line to take though; I wasn't (quite) born in the era of Tchaicovsky, Rachmaninov, Bach, Beethoven etc but that doesn't sto pme appreciating them

You obviously missed the line in my response where i said i appreciated them, but chose my favourite.
I'd enjoy a Rock and Roll round, can i just check with you so we avoid any arguments in that round, can i class the likes of Buddy Holly, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Fats Domino and Jerry Lee Lewis as Rock 'n' Roll???

Re: Music Cup Round 8 - Punk!
I think there was a punk “era” that indeed was about more than just music. But that would be judged in a “vote for your favourite socio-economic climate” competition.
Where we disagree musically is that I don’t believe the timeline of music should be segmented into “eras” at all. I think it shows a one-dimensional style of thought which is completely at odds with anything artistic. Given that music, like any other art, evolves based on what has gone before - to compartmentalise bands rather than songs into punk, indie, Britpop, stadium rock etc., particularly based on what years they played their music in, shows that we as humans don’t have the ability to see time as one entity, but rather a strict lineage that must be adhered to. This was never more apparent than when bands like Linkin Park and Korn were rush-packaged into this nonsensical, embarrassing “nu-metal” category by record label executives, when they should have been acknowledged for what they actually were – a product of both hip-hop and metal, and what they were achieveing.
In the 1990’s, on your timeline, Punk was dead and buried a long time ago. Yet Manic Street Preachers released an album (including “You Love Us”) – which was just as rebellious, just as anti-establishment, and just as far-removed from the general music climate of the time as Punk was when it hit the scene in the 70’s. Not to mention the homo-erotic challenge of the video and band’s look and rhetoric, which was hugely at odds with the masculinity driven music of that era. Generation Terrorists was about as punk as it gets – surely it doesn’t need a “made in 1976” sticker to prove that? That’s just a label.
Then on a purely face-value level, there are power chords, there are nihilistic vocals and there is make-up. Either way the argument is there.

Surely androgynous behaviour is one of the key tenets of the punk movement?
What do I know? I was only born in '84

Wasn't that more the post-punk and new romantic era? Steve Strange, Boy George etc. I don't recall too many androgynous types from the punk era apart from perhaps Wayne/Jayne County

Maybe androgyny is slightly the wrong word - I mean a blurring of the gender lines, and in my opinion, this definitely started with the punk movement. But you're right, was a lot more linked to the 80's.

My choice that I wanted is leading the way.
Unfortunately I didn't manage to get it and the one I ended up with is last.

sticking with tham theme of religion and the eurovision, you could have had Lordi!
Re: Music Cup Round 8 - Punk!
i am glad you said mainland europe as otherwise I would have been doomed to last again when I chose bomfunk mcs freestyler (iceland)
Re: Music Cup Round 8 - Punk!
Iceland would be fine, I just wanted to have non UK & Ireland songs but anywhere else that is part of Europe would be allowed.
Re: Music Cup Round 8 - Punk!
I've sent my choice. Think I'm back to being at a disadvantage this round though as all the Euro bands I know are probably too old for most of you!

The only music I know from main land Europe is death/viking metal. I reckon that could be a hit with the voters!

Just waiting on Asdral225 now then it's ready to go up.
Depending upon his choice I reckon 10 points are in the bag for me this week.
