England v New Zealand, 3rd ODI, Trent Bridge
Last ODI of the series, and the last ODI for both these teams before the Champions Trophy. Led by Guptill, New Zealand have an unassailable 2 nil lead in the series and this is just a dead rubber. England have made 4 changes - Broad and Finn are back from injury, whilst Tredwell and Bopara ( ) are also in. Dernbach, Woakes, Anderson and Swann are the outgoing names. For New Zealand, Southee comes back from injury and replaces Bracewell, while Munro is in for Elliot.
England 1 Alastair Cook, 2 Ian Bell, 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Joe Root, 5 Eoin Morgan, 6 Ravi Bopara, 7 Jos Buttler (wk), 8 Tim Bresnan, 9 Stuart Broad, 10 James Tredwell, 11 Steven Finn.
New Zealand 1 Luke Ronchi, 2 Martin Guptill, 3 Kane Williamson, 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Colin Munro, 6 Brendon McCullum, 7 James Franklin, 8 Nathan McCullum, 9 Tim Southee, 10 Kyle Mills, 11 Mitchell McClenaghan.
New Zealand have won the toss and will field.

Lose the toss and bat first with NZ very confident of chasing anything down and eng being unable to accumulate or defend a total and fancying this.
Cook needs some new luck after another toss loss.

Southee back for NZ, and Munro replaces Elliot - personally I'd have benched Franklin & relied on Elliot/Munro/KW as 5th bowler.
Update, Elliot has a "tight" calf muscle, so the change is precautionary. I hope Munro goes well though, talented kid. Thanks again South Africa

Cook gone for a duck. Weakness of the review system exposed as well. Not in a million years should Cook have been reviewing that.

England have lost their first wicket, and their first review. 4/1 after 3 overs. This has the feel of a 150 all out innings for me. At least the Champions Trophy isn't for a while...what? England's first game on Saturday.

Superb bowl from McClenaghan. Swinging inside, bowl hitting middle and leg..Correct decision by the umpire. One review wasted.

Was only ever 1 in ODI's I think, and 2 in Tests. I'm sure someone will correct me forthwith though!

Yeah think that's right JD. India will have to use the DRS system in the Champions Trophy!

It's 1 per innings in ODIs, 2 in tests.
The idea is to eliminate howlers rather than overturn marginal calls. The top umpires get 8 or 9 calls out of 10 dead right, of the remainder about 1/2-2/3ds are "marginal". 1 challenge per innings ought to be enough to deal with that. Basically the idea is to improve decision making from 90% to 95% correct, which is why I've never understood the BCCI's insistence on 100% being the benchmark before bothering with technology

I think when it was 1st trialled (in an NZ vs Aus series IIRC) they had it set at 2 & 3, and the players involved felt that was too many challenges, slowing up the game.

Surely but am not sure they will correctly use or not, though having a wicket keeper as a captain we have an edge over other teams in the CT.

Speaking of players who're much better when pressure is off, Jimmy Franklin just bowled an over and only conceded 1 run.

So 48-1 after 14 overs. The early exit of Alastair Cook brought together the dreaded combination of Ian Bell and Jonathan Trott, and England are flying along at 3.5 an over!.

Re: England v New Zealand, 3rd ODI, Trent Bridge
I think Brendon McCullum has been trusting Franklin's bowling a bit too much. After injuries forced him to reinvent himself as an all-rounder, Franklin's bowling hasn't been much of a wicket taking threat really. He has become more of a containing bowler on his day, but he has been going for plenty against a batting unit that usually plods along. Kane Williamson is more of a wicket taking threat than Franklin is. And even young Munro can bowl.

Trott's gone, McClenaghan with the wicket. 37 of 53 from Trott. England 69-2 in the 19th.

Re: England v New Zealand, 3rd ODI, Trent Bridge
OK, so 3.5 an over in 18 overs isn't exactly scorching the turf of the outfield, but we needed some solidity after losing Cook early and after the dismal performances in the first two matches..
The revised ODI fielding restrictions have swung the game back to being about keeping wickets intact and the scoreboard ticking along in the first half of the innings and then becoming progressively more aggressive in the later overs - with wickets back and good ball strikers like Buttler and Morgan adding 100 in the last 10 overs is not ridiculous.

And as I was writing, Trott goes to a maybe iffy LBW decision - makes COOK's review seem more foolish now.
Again though it's a batsman getting into the 30s and not pushing on. Seems to have been the story of England's summer so far.

NZ have no Woakes. Just a team that put even the golden generation of Aussie to shame.
Even the sun has retreated here in awe of their glow and glory.
This colour has made England even worse. Back to blue please and you might lost less heavily.

Need to start pushing the accelerator now - aim for 200+ by 40 overs (needs about 8 an over) while only losing one or at most two wickets (and given there's a batting power play to take, we'll probably lose more wickets than we score runs for those 5...), then blitz the last 10 overs

why do I bother. stick on the radio to hear so bloody growler cheering to one of our numpties getting out again.
it's all a bit of shambles. Nobody can build an innings and sail through like Guppers. Poor side.
so annoying to give away wickets in the way the mighty guppers never would.
from ok for 250 to probably 180 all out now knowing us.

I turned on again and bell is out.
sod ths. England lose wickets when I try to listen or watch... well feels like it. probably just a reflection of being so poor nobody can stay in for ten minutes.
utter rubbish.
and that's it for England. all the batting gone and trying to bowl to a superior side.
disgrace to have got this bad this quickly really.

Key moment here - power play due. NZ have 2 more overs of "5th bowler" (hopefully KW) to bowl, England's 2 best hitters in, but not played in

Superb from Ian Bell, delighted for him. Had a tough old Summer so far, so much needed boost.

Good point that, we won 12 out of 14 ODIs in 2012 before Giles took over - including 4 in the UAE. Since Giles took over, we lost to India 3-2, edged out New Zealand on their turf 2-1, before being battered in this home series. Not good from the King of Spain.

Well, at least it wasn't power playitis that got us this time, just a few minutes of bad cricket with the two wickets going and two new guys not getting themselves played in quickly.
Before the 2 wickets, 300 or very near to looked within reach, but we've dropped about 30 runs off that schedule through the power play, and neither Bopara nor Morgan are looking overly fluent - be happy if we get over 250 now.

Bopara really is crap. How many more chances is he going to get.
Giles is out of his depth. Poor selections, and England's ODI tactics have reverted to pre-Flower style, when we were one of the worst teams in the universe. What happened to "fearless cricket"?
