Confederations Cup
First topic message reminder :
Just kicked off and Neymar has scored a wonder goal to kick the competition off. A very good way of proving some doubters wrong I suppose.

all buffon has to his name is 4 league titles while at juve, vds has that at united alone and a champions league medal (to go along with his ajax one) as well as best european keeper twice to buffons 1
i like buffon but do think he gets too much plaudits sometimes as he has always had a very defence heavy team in front of him.
I really think medals are overrated when it comes to comparisons like this but as GSC says Buffon also has a World cup winners medals and has actually won 6 serie A's. He has also been pretty much unanimously one of the world's best since about 1999/2000, I can't remember VDS ever really being classed as anything above very good other than by a United or Fulham fan.
i know such stupidity from fans who watch him week in week out thinking they know best, suppose he doesn't always stand out on motd

Xavi - "Chavvy" or "Shavvy"? I'd say "Chavvy" because I wouldn't say "Shabee Alonso", I'd say "Chabee Alonso".

depends how spains legs are, they looked tired against italy and cant have got much better after 120 minutes. see goals as neither strength are defending. cant see brazil coping well with little possession

Re: Confederations Cup
Spain (as Barcalona and Brazil do) leave so much room at the back and Brazil have taken advantage of that. If you can get the ball behind then, you get them turning back and put them under pressure.

Re: Confederations Cup
I didn't think Spain would play as badly as they did against Italy but they have. Coupled with Brazil's superb display, they could well get a hiding tonight. Arbeloa's had one of the worst 45 minutes I've ever seen, reminiscent of that weekend Rafael was subbied in the first half against someone.

Re: Confederations Cup
I think the main thing is Brazil have had a run of games at a high intensity instead of constant friendlies and tinkering with the team. They look very good, they are very comparable in terms of style and quality to the WC 2010 team and the previous few years when they won the Confed cup. So not an ATG Brazil but good enough to challenge for the WC and with this support (best i've ever heard) who would be against them.

Re: Confederations Cup
At least the Spanish got to the final this time, and they can at least look back with pride at having played a major footballing nation.
Unlike 4 years ago when they were roundly beaten by the USA, described by many as the darkest period Spanish football has known.

Re: Confederations Cup
This game just proved how poor Spain are defensively. In the air, against pace, through the middle, just desperately poor and sub-standard. Most teams, including England, will relish playing them.
Poor old Brazil as well, this was probably the worst result that could have happened to them. Expectations will be huge, despite Brazil being a relatively average team. Their attack is mostly style over substance, well-organised teams will be able to keep them out. Neymar's good, but he won't be the finished article come 2014.
Overall, nothing much here for the two top teams in the world currently - Germany and England - to be worried about.

Re: Confederations Cup
duty we wouldn't have the ball to put pressure on spain defensively, ramos is massively overarted. they have never been brilliant at defending but when the opponents dont have the ball you dont need to defend much.
england are still miles behind the likes of spain and germany, not sure what england games you watch duty. i'll look forward to your "england going to win 2014 world cup thread" when we go out dissapointing when we are shown up for the technically enept team we are but probably get it to pens as we can defend alright and can blame the hot weather as to why we lost

Re: Confederations Cup
Wouldn't read a great deal into the result as a) Spain had played 120 minutes in very high humidity a few days previous and b) Spain have ready made replacements for those that may need phasing out/rotated in the run up to the WC.
Spain's defense isn't great, but they tend to defend by keeping the ball. Brazil pressured them really well - but then they are playing in their own territory so are used to the heat and Spain looked out on their feet. England with their current tactics of letting the other team have possession are really going to struggle in Brazil - if they get there.
Xavi had a poor game to add to his poor (by his standards) season. Busquests was also getting overrun but when Isco and Martinez are waiting in the wings there's not much of an issue here. Spain do need better than Fernando Torres though (unless Tiati are in town), but there must be a Spainish number 9 somewhere in La Liga that can take his place. Villa is fine for now, but he's injury prone and getting on a bit.

Fred seems to be the ultimate goal poacher. Does nothing in the game at all, except put the ball in the back of the net. Not a bad attribute it has to be said.

What is it with the media and some English football fans in this country? Believed we were going to win in 2006, when we didn't really have a hope, and now we have a genuine chance, they'd rather not believe.
