The Pemberton Greenish Academy batsman Dominic Sibley is named in a Championship squad for the first time but Gary Wilson is unavailable for selection due to his involvement in Ireland’s two One Day Internationals against Holland.
this is ricky pointing's final first class match

Re: surrey vs nottinghamshire county championship
Thanks, JimBob.
Particularly interested in your comment about Meaker. I know he hasn't been at his very best this season but that's still a real blow as regards protecting our Division One status. Where did you get the news from?
Suspect Sibley is called up to get a 'feel' of being around the first team rather than to play but who knows? As a pure batsman, he's more of a logical replacement for Wilson than Ansari. Would be quite something for him to make his first class debut in Ponting's final match. I spoke briefly to Sibley during the seconds' game at Guildford last week. Pleasant and intelligent lad. I'm sure he'll have been taken by surprise by the call up - he said he had scored 3 fifties this season but now needed to convert another into a big score.
I would guess that Keedy's sevenfer at Headingley and the continuing hope that Tremlett will rediscover his form will lead to Linley missing out along with Sibley (probably) or Ansari.

Wonder whether we are preparing a turning wicket. Potentially we are looking at Batty, Keedy and Ansari all playing. Well done to Sibley for getting into the squad - tho as is the way of these things he's had several low scores recently for the 2nd XI.

Thanks, JimBob. Wasn't doubting you, just hadn't heard it. Poor that the Club website doesn't give more details of injuries.jimbobgooner wrote:hi guildford some one who i follow on twitter spoke to him friday night and he said early august he also said about sibley being involved so i doubt he's making it upguildfordbat wrote:Thanks, JimBob.

Ponting's last first class game, then. Boy he'll be missed, not only a true great in terms of pure ability and output, but one of the games fiercest competitors. Brilliant to watch and a brilliant adversary for England. I hope he goes out in style.
Re: surrey vs nottinghamshire county championship
Fists - agreed. I think most of the Surrey boys here would regard Ponting featuring in an unbroken third wicket stand today of over 300 as suitably stylish.Fists of Fury wrote:Ponting's last first class game, then. Re: surrey vs nottinghamshire county championship
Not to be as Burns becomes the third wicket of the morning, maddeningly a careless waft down the legside in the last over before lunch.
''I think both sides will be pleased with their morning's work'' - John Shaw, Radio Notts, sharing commentarry duties with Churchy. Absolute bo**ocks! Where do they get some of these guys from? We won the toss and elected to bat in ideal conditions, yet have lost 3 wickets in the first session with under a hundred on the board. Clearly Notts' morning and once again we are playing catch up cricket ....

Today's performance fully deserving an outcome of relegation. Simply not good enough - by some distance.

I admire your optimism GB!
Sounds like a shocker...clutching at straws (is there an emoticon for straw clutching?) If there was, I'd be using a lot as far as Surrey are concerned!).... Somerset haven't done too well against Sussex today... as bad as Surrey have been in the championship this year.. its remarkable that they are not by now well and truly buried or completely adrift at the bottom..
Note, I am fully expecting them to be relegated... and if the end result of that is a change in policy and an end to buying in players at the end of their playing careers.... and an opportunity to develop some younger talent (even if it means staying in Div 2 for a while).. that as far as I am concerned... would be a positive outcome...

The only time one of those three 'spins' anything is when Batty is in possession of a coin at 10.30 prior to the match!

Re: surrey vs nottinghamshire county championship
Hi Goochie - at the ground, glorious day with literally not a cloud in the sky. Bowling hasn't been bad but nowhere near enough to defend in ideal batting conditions. Mullaney batted very well, perfectly selecting when to defend and when to attack.
Surrey highlight so far has been wee Jimmy's stumping by Davies off Keedy - should be worth a look on Surrey tv.
Meanwhile, 3 overs before tea and Notts 233-4, a lead of 35. Patel looking solid in every sense.

Can't understand why Ansari's only bowled 7 overs. There definitely seems to be a hierarchy at the club again.

Re: surrey vs nottinghamshire county championship
Today is probably slightly above a par score for a 'typical' Oval pitch. Slightly above because of Surrey's atrocious bowling 'attack'! I reckon we could be batting again by lunch, and will have to bat for at least 4 sessions to escape with another draw. 5 points is the maximum we can gain from this match, but more realistically, it's going to be 2.
The weird thing is, even with a heavy defeat, safety is still entirely in our own hands. I think though, we deserve/need to be relegated so we can get rid of the old deadwood - the 38yo brigade will be 39 next season!

All very depressing. Seems very likely Somerset will only get four points and Derby three in their matches. If by some miracle we really dig in for the second innings we could yet improve our position against them slightly.

True. However, draws probably won't be enough to save us from the drop if there is a winner when Somerset play Derbys second time round.Corporalhumblebucket wrote:All very depressing. Impressed by Notts today. A controlled and professional performance. Both Mullaney and Patel mixed attack and defence very well. Nice cameo also from Read who put his foot on the gas to take Notts towards their fourth batting point and unselfishly lost his wicket in the process.
I'm certainly no great fan of Keedy's but he worked hard and found some turn, deserving his couple of wickets. (JDizzle - if you're reading, he and Davies did Jimmy Taylor like a kipper.) Tremlett did well when pitching the ball up but at times was too legside.
Fielding was a mixed bag. Determination throughout from Batty and Ponting with effective athleticism from Burns and Ansari. Tremlett however was too often at sea whilst in an apparent fit of pique the Brain conceded 4 overthrows off his own bowling when he needlessly tried to throw down the stumps and missed by a country mile!
Suspect we're going to have to bat out almost all of the last five sessions to get a draw. Can't see that happening. Yet again we suffer badly (and deservedly) as a consequence of having to play catch up cricket.

Century for Patel as he drives past Tremlett at mid off who went down like a shot giraffe in slow motion. Shahzad limpet like and hasn't scored this morning.

and another 50 partnership! A ton for Patel as well. Looks like Notts are setting themselves to bat as long as, to take full advantage of the predicted deterioration in the pitch...............I reckon they've got enough already for an inns win!

Re: surrey vs nottinghamshire county championship
Start of the second session and we trail by a huge 180. Bizarrely, if you delete the first day (yes, I know you can't!) including the 50 runs that Notts scored without loss then, I would say we were narrowly on top.
Dernbach bowled particularly well this morning, with some really quick bouncers and the odd slow looping yorker. Gurney didn't fancy facing him at all and refused an easy single for number ten Adams to ensure he (Gurney) stayed off strike. Adams was not impressed.

Re: surrey vs nottinghamshire county championship
As I feared, a wicket although taken by Adams with a peach of a delivery that cleaned up Burns' stumps. Patel still bowling well and getting some bounce, unlucky not to have Harinath caught at square leg in the last over as the ball looped over Wessels. Batting suddenly looks a lot more difficult as the runs for Harinath and new man Solanki have rather dried up ....guildfordbat wrote:67-0
