Re: Greatest Premiership Defender
I really should have nominated. It does hurt me that a true-born noble Englishman, our rightful captain, hero of many great victories, is off that list.

I'd have Terry easily above Campbell, Carragher, Carvalho and Ollys votes.

Re: Greatest Premiership Defender
Carvalho made Terry look like a top defender for a few years.
Terry is massively overrated, good at recovering but the top defenders don't have to recover.

Terry was a rock for club and country. Under Jose he one was of the best in the world easily.
Carragher (certainly) and Campbell can't say the same really.

I still remember the day with tears. The day that John Terry kept out the cheating Portuguese for 2 hours. What valiant defending that was, pride and passion. No thought given to himself, just to his country, and his people. What a legend.

Re: Greatest Premiership Defender
I'm surprised Vidic isn't on the list. I'm not saying he is/was the greatest ever defender in the PL but he'd be near the top of any list.
I think Carvalho made Terry "great". Chelsea haven't been the same defensive unit since he left and now they have someone half-decent to play alongside Terry in Cahill, Terry's past it. I'm struggling to keep the vomit down but my vote probably has to go to cAshley.

Forgot about Sol Campbell when I voted.............doh!
Ashley Cole was one of my votes. Excellent defender.
Somebody mentioned Des Walker. He wasn;t as good after his spell in Italy.

Also liked Keown. No nonsense, just hit row Z. As a defender myself, I always preferred to play with somebody like that.

Re: Greatest Premiership Defender
It's weird to see how intelligent Keown seems now as a pundit considering his reputation as a defender, known for annoying strikers with little kicks and just booting it out.

Re: Greatest Premiership Defender
His one let down was the Van Nistlerooy incident. But I bet most strikers who played against him would name him in their top three defenders that they faced.

Let down? That is one of my all time favourite Premier League moments, I remember how big the Arsenal-United matches felt those days, even my family who don't like football used to sit around for them and that was hilarious.

Quite agree. A lot of passion was on show, and when he hit the bar, it was just amazing.

Passion is great, but no need to cowardly hit somebody on top of the head, from behind.

The first time I saw Arsenal play live was Dennis Bergkamp's debut against Middlesborough in 1995. We must have had an injury crisis in midfield as Keown played there alongside David Platt. He ran around like a headless chicken for most of the match, but did a Cruyff turn which bamboozled the Boro midfield and had the North Bank applauding.
A few weeks later, he had to play in the middle again, against Blackburn, and tried to do another Cruyff turn. This time he went over his ankle and was ruled out for a month. Funnily enough he never got picked in centre mid again after that.

No he wasn't certainly but prior to that he was up there as one of the best going.

Indeed he was, although his career curtailed a little once the EPL started.
