Basically, what it says on the tin.
What are your favourite lyrics? The ones that speak to you the most? Or just the ones that you think or effin' great!
1 A rainy night in Soho- The Pogues
"Some of them fell into heaven. Some of them fell into hell" Love Shane McGowan. Just a pity he drank himself to incoherence.
2 Badlands- Bruce Springsteen
"Poor man wanna be rich. Rich man wanna be king. And the King ain't satisfied till he rules everything." Dome of my favourite Springsteen lyrics but not one of my favourite songs.
3 Lyin' eyes- The Eagles
"City girls just seem to find out early how to open doors with just a smile. "
Just the song in general is well written but the opening line is class!
Over to you's anyway or I'll just end ip continuing on with a monologue.

Love the resentment in Positively 4th Street particularly
You got a lotta nerve to say you are my friend
When I was down you just stood there grinning
&
Yes, I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes
You'd know what a drag it is to see you

Year of the Cat is one of my 'guilty pleasure' albums.88Chris05 wrote:Not sure why, but I love the line 'She comes out of the sun in a silk dress, running like a watercolour in the rain' by Al Stewart in Year of the Cat. Just always stands out to me.
Steely Dan have some great lyrics, or lines in lyrics; like this, the chorus from 'Throw Back the Little Ones':
'Throw back the little ones and pan-fry the big ones,
Use tact, poise and reason and gently squeeze them'
Why the hell would you want to sing about that?!

I got this feeling on the summer day when you
were gone.
I crashed my car into the bridge. I watched, I let it
burn.
I threw your sh*t into a bag and pushed it down the
stairs.
I crashed my car into the bridge.
I don't care, I love it.

You're on a different road, I'm in the Milky Way
You want me down on earth, but I am up in space
You're so damn hard to please, we gotta kill this
switch
You're from the 70's, but I'm a 90's bi*ch
I love it!
I love it!

I dare anyone to beat this lyrical masterpiece. I mean accenting b*tch to rhyme with 70s is masterful

Re: Favourite lyrics Thread
I thought it was chick instead of the alternative term for a dog that is female. Or am I getting the radio edit?
Anyway, the line "looking for a ruby in a mountain of rocks" in 2 out of 3 Ain't Bad. Actually quite a lot of that song, icicles instead of tears, never drill for oil on city street, etc etc.

From "Change" by Blind Melon
When you feel your life ain't worth living
You've got to stand up and Take a look around you then a look way up to the sky,
And when your deepest thoughts are broken,
Keep on dreaming boy, cause when you stop dreamin' it's time to die.
Top stuff.

Heard this song by Camper Van Beethoven in bed this morning, great song but didn't have a clue what was going on so I had to google the lyrics. Still non the wiser...... :
Every day, I get up and pray to Jah
And he decreases the number of clocks by exactly one
Everybody's comin' home for lunch these days
Last night there were skinheads on my lawn
Take the skinheads bowling
Take them bowling
Take the skinheads bowling
Take them bowling
Some people say that bowling alleys got big lanes
Some people say that bowling alleys all look the same
There's not a line that goes here that rhymes with anything
I has a dream last night, but I forget what it was
I had a dream last night about you, my friend
I had a dream--I wanted to sleep next to plastic
I had a dream--I wanted to lick your knees
I had a dream--it was about nothing
Every day, I get up and pray to Jah
And he decreases the number of clocks by exactly one
Everybody's comin' home for lunch these days
Last night there were skinheads on my lawn
Take the skinheads bowling
Take them bowling
Take the skinheads bowling
Take them bowling
Some people say that bowling alleys got big lanes
Some people say that bowling alleys all look the same

Beautiful song by an excellent band.............Wages day, Fergus sings the blues, Ragman, Places..............The lead singer wrote the music and he is truly very talented..Mind the windows Tino. wrote:I love the opening two verses to Dignity by Deacon Blue. Absolutely love them.
There's a man I meet
Walks up our street
He's a worker for the council
Has been twenty years
And he takes no lip off nobody
And litter off the gutter
Puts it in a bag
And never thinks to mutter
And he packs his lunch in a Sunblest bag
The children call him Bogie
He never lets on
But I know 'cause he once told me
He let me know a secret
About the money in his kitty
He's gonna buy a dinghy
Gonna call her Dignity
And I'll sail her up the west coast
Through villages and towns
I'll be on my holidays
They'll be doing their rounds
They'll ask me how I got her I'll say
I saved my money
They'll say isn't she pretty
That ship called Dignity
Not sure If he is big over here but a hugely respected artist back home is Don Mclean...............American pie is his biggest hit..
And in the streets the children screamed
The lovers cried and Poets dreamed
But not a word was spoken
The church bells were all broken
and the three men I admire most
The Father, son and holy ghost
They caught the last train to the Coast
The day the music died
Wonderful............As was ..Castles in the air.......

My only problem with 'Fergus Sings the Blues' is that it should be 'in bars of twelve or fewer,' not 'twelve or less.'

Re: Favourite lyrics Thread
INspired by hearing it on the radio the other day:
Billy Joel - Piano Man. First two versus particularly are great poetry.
It's nine o'clock on a Saturday
The regular crowd shuffles in
There's an old man sitting next to me
Making love to his tonic and gin
He says, "Son can you play me a memory
I'm not really sure how it goes
But it's sad and it's sweet
And I knew it complete
When I wore a younger man's clothes"
Sing us a song you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feeling alright
Now John at the bar is a friend of mine
He gets me my drinks for free
And he's quick with a joke or to light up your smoke
But there's someplace that he'd rather be
He says, "Bill, I believe this is killing me"
As a smile ran away from his face
"Well, I'm sure that I could be a movie star
If I could get out of this place"
Now Paul is a real estate novelist
Who never had time for a wife
And he's talking with Davy, who's still in the Navy
And probably will be for life
And the waitress is practicing politics
As the businessmen slowly get stoned
Yes they're sharing a drink they call loneliness
But it's better than drinking alone
Sing us a song you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feeling alright
It's a pretty good crowd for a Saturday
And the manager gives me a smile
'Cause he knows that it's me they've been coming to see
To forget about life for a while
And the piano sounds like a carnival
And the microphone smells like a beer
And they sit at the bar and put bread in my jar
And say "Man what are you doing here?"
Sing us a song you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feeling alright
