Ozil shirts outselling Bale shirts by 5:1
Gareth Bale is likely to come in for more criticism after replacing Mesut Ozil at Real Madrid with leading online retailer UKSoccershop.com revealing sales of Arsenal's new signing are outstripping the Welshman's by five to one.
Madrid have already been castigated for allowing Ozil to leave for around half the fee paid to make Bale the world's most expensive player after moving from Tottenham to the Bernabeu for £86million.
Germany coach Joachim Low branded the decision 'incomprehensible', while Madrid players including Cristiano Ronaldo and Sergio Ramos have also expressed their anger at seeing the German leave.
Pressure is now mounting on Bale ahead of his debut with Real Madrid next weekend, especially with shirt sales figures suggesting it is the player he has replaced who is capturing the imagination of the football world.
UKSoccershop.com managing director Simon Pretswell said: 'Leaving aside the debate over Bale's sporting merits, a large part of any major transfer is often the commercial advantages associated with the signing of the player.'
'In the case of Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and previous stars such as David Beckham, it is almost a license to print money for the club as shirt sales and other merchandising goes through the roof.'
'While it would be untrue to say there is not an interest in Bale shirts, our sales data shows he is being significantly outsold by Mesut Ozil and is not attracting the same level of attention generated by Neymar when he transferred to Barcelona earlier in the summer.'
'Bale's talents as a footballer are undoubted, but he has never been one of our bestselling Premiership players, with supporters preferring the likes of Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie, Steven Gerrard and even Fernando Torres.'
Bale is already discovering that becoming the world's most valuable player comes with intense scrutiny, and will be hoping he begins better on the pitch than he has done in the club merchandising stakes.

I've said before that I don't think Bale is that marketable, he's just quite boring.
Ridiculous that he is outsold by the likes of Chamberlain and Torres.

Such a non story for me. Bale is another player in a star studded Real Madrid squad. Why would a Real Madrid fan rush out to buy the new Bale shirt when he/she probably already has a Ronaldo/Ramos/Di Maria/Isco/Benzema/Alonso/Marcelo shirt.
On the other hand, you've got a world class player like Ozil moving to a smaller club in Arsenal. Of course they're gonna buy the new Ozil shirt. He's their new hero, their new idol.

Agree with Marky. Whenever a player moves to a new club their shirt sales are obviously gonna go through the roof. I'm sure if Bale hits the ground running his shirt sales will start increasing. Fact is Ronaldo is the main man at Madrid so he's got some way to go there, both in terms of shirt sales and performances.

Re: Ozil shirts outselling Bale shirts by 5:1
It will take time for Bale to really impose himself in the European market. These Madrid fans probably never even took notice of Bale 12 months ago & there more likely to purchase a Ronaldo shirt anyway. He`s yet to fully establish himself, he`s never in the media internationally because of Wales or even visible in major competitions like the Champions League or the Euro`s. His performances, if carried over from Spurs to Madrid, will eventually get people's & fans attention & then his brand will grow.
Am surprised Chamberlain is that high up, ridiculous. I don't even think he`s that great a player.

I'm more surprised Oxlade-Chamberlain's name is high up the list because most clubs charge per letter

So did the Bale transfer justify an £86 million price tag?John wrote:It will take time for Bale to really impose himself in the European market. Of course it is the point. Madrid has a much larger fan base world wide than Arsenal.John wrote:Obviously not, but that's not really the point here. Ozil, a world class player joining a smaller club, desperate for a signing, with no established stars is the important factor.
Also bale was not even in the top 10 for shirt sales last year in the EPL.

I didnt think it was 5:1, to be honest. Im not suprised, Ozil is massively popular amongst Madridistas, and Bale has played all of six Champions League matches. But 5:1, I dont think he will match Ozil in sales. But I would be suprised if the gap stayed so wide.

At Tottenham he was their biggest player and star yet didn't get enough Spurs fans to buy his shirt to even break into the top 10.

This is the problem, Ozil has reached the last 3 semi-finals of the champions league, player at the World cup 2010 and Euro 2012 and will play at the World cup in 2014.kingraf wrote:I didnt think it was 5:1, to be honest. It's hardly like it's Bale's fault he comes from a small nation and Ozil comes from one of the most successful in the world thoughChampagne_Socialist wrote:This is the problem, Ozil has reached the last 3 semi-finals of the champions league, player at the World cup 2010 and Euro 2012 and will play at the World cup in 2014.kingraf wrote:I didnt think it was 5:1, to be honest. You made the statement about Messi and Ronaldo selling well in this country, you have already provided evidence of Bale not selling well over here so the balls in your court. With you lower than average IQ i'm not sure it's within your capacity to prove one of your brainless comments.

I posted a link that Bale was being outsold by Ozil, you said that the website is not good evidence because it is a UK site so you need to prove that statementThe Terror of Tylorstown wrote:You made the statement about Messi and Ronaldo selling well in this country, you have already provided evidence of Bale not selling well over here so the balls in your court. It doesn't need proving that's why, Ozil sells more in the UK because he plays for a UK based team it really is that simple. Now prove your statement.

I'm so thankful i'm not that dumb, I have nothing to prove, the fact it's a UK based website would be a strong determining factor why a UK based player sells more than a foreign based player. Now you could carry on diverting the subject or you could provide some proof that Messi and Ronaldo sell well in the UK, now I don't think you're capable of that.

You are the one who asked me for proof about messi and ronaldo selling lots of shirts in the UK (something everyone knows because every other person has a barcelona shirt with messi on the back). Me saying that lots of people wearing the said shirts wasn't good enough evidence for you because you wanted factual evidence and so I am asking you to provide the same evidence for your claims.
Provide me with factual evidence not your opinion on the statement you made.

Re: Ozil shirts outselling Bale shirts by 5:1
I hate to disrupt such a well reasoned debate, but I think the article in the OP is pretty meaningless. From looking at the original article, it's little more than an advertorial which has been fed to a lazy journalist. The point it makes is interesting - that Real overpay for Galacticos on the basis that they will shift shirts - and that if the players then fail to shift shirts it means that the risk has essentially not paid off. However, there isn't sufficient data to say whether that's the case or not with Bale.
The article makes no mention of whether the shirt sales are domestic or international nor whether they're all sales, or only those made through the site in question. From the tone of the article, it seems like they are talking about sales via a single UK outlet. In which case, respective sales of Ozil's and Bale's shirts are probably not that meaningful, especially given that Madrid's shirt sales will be high globally. I would imagine it would be far more interesting to compare Bale's shirt sales with Zidane, Ronaldo, Figo etc in their first season at Madrid, within the Spanish market only, or at a global level.

What would be interesting is to have the figures for the number of tottenham fans who purchased a madrid top with Bale on it and the number of Madrid fans who purchased an Arsenal top with Ozil on it.jbeadlesbigrighthand wrote:I hate to disrupt such a well reasoned debate, but I think the article in the OP is pretty meaningless.
