No, met one of the PM's private secretaries. Really surreal day. When we were on the street we really wanted to get photos of us outside the door but had to fight the temptation and pretend to be serious professionals.

Did you take a dump in one of the toilets? That's what I would have done.Rowley wrote:No, met one of the PM's private secretaries. Really surreal day. Not that I would ever get invited to Downing Street.

I did go for a urine, just wanted to see what the toilets were like. Run of the mill to be honest.

How very disappointing.
I much prefer your Westlife anecdote.

So do I Tina, but it is like Citizen Kane for Orson Welles, it is such a belter if I am forever to be judged by the standards of the westlife story I am almost doomed to ever be considered a failure or disappointment.

'Acted' along side Celia Imrie (British actress) in a TV series called Wokenwell over 15 years ago. Was a school bully in one episode and got a telling off from her!
Paul Scholes was in the late night bar at my wedding. He was at a surprise party in the other room, left me and the wife a bottle of Champagne for us, top bloke! Also see him at Boundary Park now and again with his boy.
Craig Gazey and Suranne Jones where at Oldham Theatre workshop same time as my sister. Watched them in a couple stage plays before they joined Corrie Street.
Also met Jack Duckworth in a bar on holiday in Tenerife once, nice bloke again.

One of the weirdest nights that I had with a celebrity is when Hero and I got pished up at Derby football club with Kai Owen (from Torchwood) whilst Lembit Opek danced like a loon 5 yards from us!

Re: Which Famous people have you met
David Soul is possibly my favourite. I was introduced to him whilst drunk in Edinburgh and he said "hey kid, what do you wanna ask me?" I asked, without hesitation, if he'd buy me a drink cos I was skint. He duly got one to me in a flash and chatted to me for quite awhile.
The guy who introduced me to him was this guy from Panorama
He later found me in the event we were at to get me a beer cos he liked the way I approached David Soul. I also offended his wife by presuming she was his manager (she was too hot for him) and saying "really?!" when she replied they were married.

I sat behind Lulu on a plane a few years ago. Scariest flight ever as the oxigen masks dropped down and we were told that the cabin had lost pressure (my ears were hurting for days afterwards).

It was an internal flight so all one class.
Three flights in a row I was on with "celebrities" - Timmy Mallet, Antoine DuBek and Lulu.
My favourite celeb story was taking Mickie James underwear shopping in Ayr though.....

Basically, some blonde lass with a northern accent came up to me and asked if I knew where to get some good Western food. I told her the cafe we normally went to.
The following day I went to the cafe and she was there again. Had a few polite 'ah, you again' style niceties and thought no more of it, until the day after when I realised that she really, really looked like Steph Dean out of Hollyoaks. I'd love to know if it was. She was me favourite, back in the day.

One famous person I am trying NOT to meet at the moment is Oliver Farmer, from Charmouth, who according to BBC website won the 1st Annual World Garlic Eating Competition for eating the most pre-peeled Iberian cloves: 49 in 5 minutes.

Saw Stephen Merchant on the Underground and Mackenzie Crook near Willesden High Road. On both occasions I recognised them without realising that I didn't actually know them personally and raised my hand then aborted in mid-greeting when I realised who they were. Both looked at me pretty oddly, though I suppose Stephen Merchant can't really help it.

Re: Which Famous people have you met
I met the Queen in 2000, during an official visit to the Navy base where I was working at that time.
It's quite a formal business, actually, meeting the Queen. Those chosen to be introduced were formed into "horseshoes", sort of semi circles of 7 people and she came to chat briefly with each group before moving on. The briefing beforehand advised men, when being introduced, to make a slight bow from the neck, and ladies to make a short curtsey.
The Queen had a glass of Pimms, as I recall and I rather thought she needed a top up, but thought better of offering to nip to the bar and get her one on my chit. Probably not protocol.
She only stopped at our group for a couple of minutes and moved on. Those couple of minutes cost me a fortune, seeing as the Me'm Sahib had to have a new outfit, handbag, shoes, hairdo...... the full works... for the occasion. Still it was worth it.
I've met numerous other people of celebrity or fame down the years. The one I was most starstruck with though, was Colin Cowdrey, England cricket captain, batsman and absolute gentleman. He was a colossus to me. A god. A magician with a wand made of willow. And Kent were slated to play a county championship match against Surrey at Blackheath. An opportunity not to be missed.
Me and a couple of mates bunked off school the day before the match because we found out that the Kent team would be practising at the Rectory field. All the Kent greats were there.... David Shepherd, Derek Underwood, Alan Ealham, Alan Knott. But there was only one autograph I wanted. That of the great man himself. When he came out for his net, I held out my book, speechless. If ever there was an "I'm-not-worthy" moment, this was it.
He even spoke to me as he signed and asked me if I played cricket. I nodded. "Bat or bowl?" I think I squeaked something that was meant to be "keep wicket and bat a bit" but came out as a sort of "eeerrrrrrk". He smiled and said "Excuse me. Got to practice." and went to the nets. I watched every delivery.
My forged sick note at school the next day didn't work. I suppose showing my autograph book to everybody in the class kinda gave the game away to Old Nobbo (Miss Nobbs) who couldn't fail to two and two together. I got a double detention for that. One for bunking off and one for producing such a poor forgery. Old Nobbo demanded high standards in everything. But hey..... I've still got that autograph.

Re: Which Famous people have you met
Mate of mine was a tad obsessed with Lucy Pinder and Michelle marsh. He'd buy the calendars and put them up at home (he's married). He heard they we're doing a signing at HMV in Leeds and was too embarrassed to go by himself so I happily went along. Never seen as many teenage fans/potential sex offenders in one place since I was in the Hall of Mirrors.
Anyway, he was told he could only get one item signed (stop it) so handed me one of the calendars as asked me to go get it signed for him. For 30mins he was all bluff and bluster about what he was going to say to them and then when his turn came he scurried past looking at his shoes and didn't say a word.
My turn came and I found them to be very pleasant. Pinder is extremely polite and well spoken if a tad dull however Michelle Marsh is filthy. No really a lover of blondes but she was my favourite out of the two. Go figure!
Are they famous? No! Did I undress them with my eyes and make them feel queasy for weeks? More than likely!!!

Fourth Lion - all very well swooning over Cowdrey here now! Where were you two years ago when my nomination of this 'great, great man' (per Sobers) was being blown out of the water on the Cricket Hall of Fame thread? Don't apologise - if you're truly penitent, you can pop across to the current thread and share your views on Tony Greig. The Fourth Lion wrote:

I may just tick through the back pages to see if I can find the thread, blow the dust off it and resurrect it. Scurrilous comments (as I presume they were) should not go unchallenged, even after a period of time has elapsed. Thanks for the tip.
Not interested in Greig. The man was a buffoon. Anybody who told a West Indies team that contained Holding, Marshall, Roberts, Garner, Richards & Lloyd that he would make them grovel was asking for trouble. Now he works as a pundit for Australian TV..!! The man has no dignity.

But the most famous person is Tim Robbins.
He has came into my local in Belfast a few times now. I was play with a folk band at the time and he joined us on stage. He is actually a great musician and loves Irish Folk music.
Met a few footballers. Morten Weighorst and Dave Watson.
Also met the great Harry Gregg when I was a child at the Milk Cup. Was with my Granda who told me to get his autograph and I'd no idea who he was at the time.

Yea the pics are from the first time he was there. The 2nd time he showed up was the night I played on stage with him. I did one song with him and I sat down to do the 2nd and the screw on the mic stand was loose, the mic swung forward as he was walking past me on his way to the bar and he caught it and help it for me while I sang a whole song. Pretty decent of him I thought haha. The Boss wrote:Dee, is that the Hatfield? He died..? Well, thanks for informing me of that. I had no idea. Well, nobody would want to speak ill of the dead.guildfordbat wrote:Fourth Lion, I wasn't seeking your support on Greig - most of us ancient posters seem to have at least some concerns. I probably missed it at the time from being caught up in the obituaries for Christopher Martin-Jenkins who died at new year. Now, there was a man who knew the game of cricket.
Actually, I was writing on another discussion site at the time, and wrote a piece about the demise of men such as CMJ, John Arlott, Brian Johnson and others..... men who never played the first class game but knew it inside out in a way that those who play the game for a living don't. Players are too wrapped up in making a living out of the game to appreciate the beauty of what they do, whereas men like CMJ see it in all it's gloriousness.
I think I found a quote of CMJ's from somewhere that seemed to fit. It went something like "What do they know of cricket, who only cricket know". That rather summed it up for me.
I am sorry to hear of Tony Grieg's death. I wouldn't wish it on anybody, but I think I'll miss the contribution of the CMJ's of this world more than that of the TG's.
