The Worst arguments you've ever heard on 606 ??
First topic message reminder :
1. "Duran lost to Hearns because he was much bigger at 154 !!"........Barkley was 6ft 1 and 160...........Hagler 160 and he lost by a point !!
2. "Mayweather isn't top 10 because he didn't beat anyone decent...But Louis is at 6"...............No rebuttal needed there..
3. "Hearns didn't deserve a rematch with Marvin"..Despite the Fight of the decade and knocking out the number one contender of both wbc and WBA.....love to know what you have to do for one.....
4. "Leon Spinks is better than Muhammad Ali"........
5. "Fury would knock out both Klits who are both duckers"......Have a suspicion this guy was an alias........
6. "Roach says Mayweather is overrated and he knows his stuff"...........Not that he'd be biased in anyway...
7 "Oscar isn't a great because he lost his biggest fights".........Whittaker, Chavez, Mayorga etc...........
8 "Leonard is an easy night for Hagler"..........Vito gets a draw, Duran loses by one point.......Roldan and Hamsho make Marv struggle....
9. " Robinson plays with Jones Jr".......Like he did with Turpin twice.........
10. "Truss has 9 aliases on here"............I don't like odd numbers.

The loaded gloves one was hilarious. I literally sat here waiting for the replies D4 was going to get.

Was it also D4 who put up the post detailing all of Manny's skeletal dimensions as a way to explain his rise up the weights?

How about the one, that Mayweather was asking for drug tests to clean up the sport. Laughable considering he doesn't commit to the 24/7 tests.

Unfortunately not as you could've dismissed that immediately. I forget who posted it but I remember reading the link & it did make a lot of sense although naturally enough there were other people in the field that dismissed it. Funnily enough it was in regards to wrist girth & that many had thick wrists just like D4's right!DoubleD22 wrote:Was it also D4 who put up the post detailing all of Manny's skeletal dimensions as a way to explain his rise up the weights?

Hi Truss, it was a while ago but I posted an article about Oscar de la Hoya not being a great, and the debate was pretty interesting.I still stand by my original opinion, ,ainly cos he DID tend to lose his most important fights. He was a very, very good fighter, mind.I genuinely think that the titles he won through the divisions flatter to deceive also. Now my bias is against the WBO, who let's not forget allowed not only a bunch of real stinky fighters to become belt-holders but once had a dead man as a belt-holder.
Sugar Ray Leonard and Oscar being in the same ballpark? Not a chance.Pre- WBO and Ray cleaned up, winning almost all the main fights.I do get why ODLH is rated, I like him a lot, but I think he was box-office cos he was good looking- it's the way of thew world I know.Sorry to bring in a football comparison, but it is why David Beckham was better known than Paul Scholes.

I read a very similar article a while ago, to the wrist issue. Seems legit, if I'm completely honest. Afrikaans people, even those who haven't worked out generally have huge wrist/forearms - lo and behold they generally come in massive!

Re: The Worst arguments you've ever heard on 606 ??
Beckham was better known because he was more ambitious and travelled the world looking for recognition and fame. Scholes stayed in the comfortable and successful cocoon of Manchester. Same applies to Oscar. he tested himself and was far more ambitions than even Flloyd is. If Flloyd was in Oscars position would he fight Hopkins or Sturm?? no chance! He may have lost his biggest fights, but some of those biggest fights were more testing than most will ever strive for. He could have taken it easy after Tito, and said he won most of his biggest fights against the likes of Chavez and QuarteyJohn Bloody Wayne wrote:Agree entirely, including the Beckham bit!andygf wrote:Hi Truss, it was a while ago but I posted an article about Oscar de la Hoya not being a great, and the debate was pretty interesting.I still stand by my original opinion, ,ainly cos he DID tend to lose his most important fights. He was a very, very good fighter, mind.I genuinely think that the titles he won through the divisions flatter to deceive also. Now my bias is against the WBO, who let's not forget allowed not only a bunch of real stinky fighters to become belt-holders but once had a dead man as a belt-holder.

If it was competition he was after, why did he leave Real Madrid for LA Galaxy!?
I respect Oscar's ambition, but his results and ability didn't justify his pulling power in my opinion.

Re: The Worst arguments you've ever heard on 606 ??
I imagine you think Larry Holmes is great ??
So he beats a hammered off Foreman and defeated twice by an old Ali-Norton.......reigns for five years against nobodies (Shavers lost to a slow and old Ali) his best win was a fight he lost to Witherspoon.........Gives up the belt because he doesn't want Page........
Gets a tin pot at-the time belt in The IBf beats a few more stiffs for two years and loses twice to a lightheavyweight..
But Oscar isn't great........

Re: The Worst arguments you've ever heard on 606 ??
With the paucity of talent at heavyweight throughout history they are judged differently to anyone from different weights. Holmes is a great heavyweight who could only beat who was in front of him like Dempsey, Marciano or Louis, very few have the advantages of Ali, Frazier and Foreman to fight eachother and other very good fighters.
As a lower weight fighter De La Hoya doesn't match up well to the greats in my opinion so he's not rated as highly.

Re: The Worst arguments you've ever heard on 606 ??
Couldn't beat Spinks.........Couldn't beat Withespoon or Page If we want to criticise him..
Mayweather has beaten all in front of him and you criticise him often enough...So what if he avoided MANNY...........You don't moan about Holmes ducking Page and Thomas which was all pretty obvious and commented on back in the day..
But we won't go there...........
Oscar is a bonafide great..........Fought the best and lost some a long the way as did Holyfield who's record isn't any better......Over a similar period of time
Moorer, Bowe twice, Lewis, Ruiz ............Trinidad, Mosley twice, Mayweather, Hoppo.........
All over the same period and Oscar's wins were better too.........Comparing the fighters at the time of the fights..
Chavez twice vs Tyson twice, Whittaker vs Bowe, Quartey vs Moorer, Mayorga vs 44 year old Foreman, Vargas vs Dokes........
and good quality at 130/135 vs Cruiser wins..................
Get my drift !!!!!!!!!!!

Re: The Worst arguments you've ever heard on 606 ??
Again heavyweights are judged differently, Holyfield stepping up to face the big men while often outweighed by a good margin outdoes De La Hoya stepping up to face men of his own size. I only regard the absolute best as greats and for me he doesn't fall into that category, Holyfield was the man at two weights while De La Hoya was at one.
Now I personally don't regard Holyfield that highly he like De La Hoya has a very patchy record at the highest level but being popular elevates his status. I'd also like to see where I criticise Mayweather, I point out his record has holes in that could be improved but seeing as I place him anywhere between 8 and 12 I don't regard it as harsh criticism.
If we look at Ali his actual wins in p4p terms are not that impressive but they represent the absolute best of his division so he rightly is rated highly.

Yeah I did a little research into this topic a year or two ago, when I was going for the perfect body.
I'm a bit like Pacquiao my wrist are a bigger than the rest of my dimensions of my body according to this theory. I suppose they are always exceptions to the rule.

I understand where you're coming from & why you don't rate him as a great but I think his ability, his ambition & quality of his fights do justify his pulling power. He was rarely in a bad fight and genuinely looked for the biggest fights. Sure below WW his record wasn't as great in reality as on paper but above he fought top fighters that were at there peak give or take a year. The only fighter that really took him apart was Hopkins if you dismiss the Mannny fight & he was certainly holding his own in that fight before that great body punch.

That's the thing Truss, De La Hoya doesn't match up to those I consider great, it's a word that's too easily banded about.

In your opinion but I don't think he's great in the same way as a Arguello, Chavez or Canzoneri, the lower tier greats. If his ability matched his ambition he'd be well up there.
