Thanks for the coverage. Would be interested in your opinion (as a big fan of amateur boxing) of the changes to head gear and scoring. As a fan of professional boxing, it makes sense, as it's should be easier to recruit prospects. For fans of amateur boxing I could see it as a negative as it might be seen as losing their identity as well as their talent.

Had no idea john joe nevin signed with goldenboy.

I can see both pros and cons with the rule changes. I'll withhold my opinion until the end of the tournament on the head guards. A lot of the fighters are saying that they prefer the head guards off. Peripheral vision has improved and you get more reward for landing heavy shots. Knockouts and stoppages should be more prevalent so the casual viewer should enjoy it more, too.

Cuts are the biggest problem, boxing up to six bouts without getting one will be tough. Brings an element of luck into the equation as well, as a clash of heads or a stray elbow could remove you from the tournament automatically.

Ten point must system I don't mind. It's a bit fairer than the old system, in my opinion, though there will still be some shocking decisions over the next two weeks.

Yeah John Joe was named in the team but pulled out to travel to America, he hasn't signed yet though. Instead of calling up the reigning Irish senior champion, Declan Geraghty, who would have had a decent chance of a medal, they called up the guy he defeated in the final with a broken hand, Gary McKenna. Then they found out that it was too late register another boxer so no-one went. Farcical stuff really.

Sam Maxwell lost via DQ against the Italian. It was an accidental clash of heads and he was judged to be the transgressor.

Cuts would seem a potentially huge problem. You get cut in the first bout, it will be reopened in ever subsequent bout. I know these are all problems that amateur boxing has coped with before.

Although the old amateur system wasn't ideal, I bought into the idea that amateur boxing was a "hit don't get hit" product. Whereas professional was a much more varied product.

I think having both codes follow the same format will help both sports in the long run. Kids will see Olympic stars, make professional gains and so continue the cycle. A good amateur career being a bit more of a certainty of a good professional.

Depends on how you see them. I see them as two separate sports like Union and League. Others see the Am's as a feeder for the pro's.

If you get a cut you won't be allowed to fight. They are far more safety conscious in the Am's. That's why you get two bronze medallists in tournaments.

Yeah, never heard of the German before, but Evans's style doesn't seem as suited to the new rules as others. No complaints about the decision.

Selby could well go on and win Gold. Aloyan, the man who defeated him last time, is the main rival but I'd favour Selby. Fowler has it tough, I'd rate him lowest out of the four middleweights left and he is fighting a home fighter in the next round.

Didn't fancy Fowler to beat the Kazakh, personally. He looked very good in his Quarter on Wednesday against (I think) Juratoni of Romania. Juratoni pushed Quigley all the way in the Euro final. Fowler has done brilliantly to get this far, though. Bit gutted he didn't fight as the Kazakh will be fresher than Quigley tomorrow.

Selby on now.

Thought Selby won it, but it was tight. First was Selby's, third was Latipov's depends on how you score the second.

Golden, how do they work the weight system? Do you weigh in at the start of the tournament and then you can increase as much as you want throughout? Or do you have to maintain a weight throughout the tournament?

They weigh in everyday, so you have to maintain you're weight throughout.
