An English Ranfurly Shield!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ranfurly_Shield
As I am sure most rugby fans are aware, in New Zealand, as well as playing for their domestic trophy, the ITM Cup, their provincial sides also compete for the Ranfurly Shield. First played for in 1904, the Shield is based on a challenge system, rather than a league or knockout competition as with most sporting trophies. The holding union must defend the shield in challenge matches, and a successful challenger becomes the new holder of the Shield.
The Shield holder at the end of each season is required to accept at least seven challenges for the following year. All home games during league play, but not during knockout playoffs, in the ITM Cup or Heartland Championship are automatic challenges. The remaining shield defences must be made up of challenges from unions in the other domestic competition. For example, since North Harbour, an Air New Zealand Cup (now ITM Cup) team, held the Shield at the end of the 2006 Cup season despite losing their home quarter-final to Otago, they were forced to defend the Shield against Heartland Championship teams during the 2007 pre-season. Having successfully done so, all their home fixtures in the round-robin phase were Shield defences until they lost the shield to Waikato.
The Shield-holder is never forced to defend the Shield in an away match, although they may choose to, as Auckland, for example, did on a number of occasions during their record tenure between 1985 and 1993. More recently, Auckland played both their mandatory defences against Heartland teams in 2008 on the road.
If a challenger successfully takes the Shield, all of their home matches for the rest of the season are defences of it.
So, with some time on my hands the other day, this got me thinking about who would have been holders of an English equivalent. The main issue was finding a starting point, so in the end I decided that Wasps, as Champions in the first professional season (1996-97) should hold it initially, and their first home match of the 1997-98 season would be their first defence. So, here is how it would have gone, with Wasps losing it in the first defence, to local rivals Saracens.
Holders - London Wasps (as 1996-97 champions)
1. Wasps lost to Saracens on 19.10. 1997 (Wasps - 0 successful defences)
2. Saracens lost to Leicester Tigers on 26.12.1997 (Saracens - 3 successful defences)
3. Leicester Tigers lost to Newcastle Falcons on 20.12.1997 (Leicester Tigers - 0 successful defences)
4. Newcastle Falcons lost to London Irish on 27.9.1998 (Newcastle Falcons - 9 successful defences)
5. London Irish lost to Northampton Saints on 24.10.1998 (London Irish - 2 successful defences)
6. Northampton Saints lost to London Irish on 5.1.1999 (Northampton Saints - 3 successful defences)
7. London Irish lost to Saracens on 1.5.1999 (London Irish - 4 successful defences)
8. Saracens lost to London Irish on 12.9.199 (Saracens - 2 successful defences)
9. London Irish lost to Leicester Tigers on 16.10.1999 (London Irish - 1 successful defence)
10. Leicester Tigers lost to Northampton Saints on 30.11.2002 (Leicester Tigers - 36 successful defences)*
11. Northampton saints lost to Gloucester on 28.12.2002 (Northampton Saints - 0 successful defences)
12. Gloucester lost to Bath on 8.11.2003 (Gloucester - 9 successful defences)

16. Northampton Saints lost to Gloucester on 3.3.2007 (Northampton Saints - 0 successful defences)
17. Gloucester lost to Leicester Tigers on 9.2.2008 (Gloucester - 9 successful defences)
18. Leicester Tigers lost to Sale Sharks on 23.2.2008 (Leicester Tigers - 0 successful defences)
19. Sale Sharks lost to Worcester Warriors on 29.2.2008 (Sale Sharks - 0 successful defences)
20. Worcester Warriors lost to Bath on 19.4.2008 (Worcester Warriors - 3 successful defences)
21. Bath lost to Gloucester on 13.9.2008 (Bath - 1 successful defence)
22. Gloucester lost to Worcester Warriors on 21.4.2009 (Gloucester - 9 successful defences)
23. Worcester Warriors lost to London Irish on 25.4.2009 (Worcester Warriors - 0 successful defences)
24. London Irish lost to Newcastle Falcons on 22.11.2009 (London Irish - 3 successful defences)

27. Saracens lost to Exeter Chiefs on 30.10.10 (Saracens - 3 successful defences)
28. Exeter Chiefs lost to Leicester Tigers on 1.1.2011 (Exeter Chiefs - 2 successful defences)
29. Leicester Tigers lost to Saracens on 5.3.2011 (Leicester Tigers - 2 successful defences)
30. Saracens lost to London Wasps on 3.9.2011 (Saracens - 3 successful defences)

33. Saracens lost to Leicester Tigers on 19.2.2012 (Saracens - 5 successful defences)
34. Leicester Tigers lost to Harlequins on 22.9.2012 (Leicester Tigers - 5 successful defences)
35. Harlequins lost to Saracens on 30.9.2012 (Harlequins - 0 successful defences)
*Held the shield for over 3 years.
Saracens would now hold the shield having completed 12 successful defences since win winning it from Harlequins.
I think in New Zealand, there are those who hold being holders of the Ranfurly Shield in higher esteem than winning the ITM Cup. I wonder if it would have been something that would have worked in this country, and if the fans would have taken to such an idea.
Anyway, I realise that this is a bit of a pointless post, but there you go, I was bored, and my love of rugby meant I defaulted to looking up stuff about it and then writing this.

Re: An English Ranfurly Shield!
i think that sounds like an awesome idea. are there any other incentives or rewards from holding the ranfurly shield other than kudos?
without its 100+ year history, there would need to be something to get the interest going were it to be introduced into the AP for example.
free beers for away supporters after the match if their team successfully challenges for it Would easily be financed by the extra ticket sales...

Re: An English Ranfurly Shield!
Fun working it out. Given the way the French teams play away from home I'm guessing that their teams would hold it for longer and as Claremont haven't lost at home for 6 years or something stupid like that le french ranfurly shield would be a permanent part of their trophy cabinet.

Just looking there, are these based on the holder losing at home? Cos in 16 above Leinster lost to Munster at Thomond Park for the Magners final that time.

Re: An English Ranfurly Shield!
Out of jnterest, do these Jeff/Celtalian 'Ranfurly' turnover calculations include games played during IWs?
Do, indeed the proper Ranfurly matches include games concurrent with AB matches?
How seriously are they taken?

The IW's have no relevance to the Ranfurly Shield Portnoy. The ITM Cup runs through the Rugby Championship and the Tri Nations before that.

Re: An English Ranfurly Shield!
Is it held as a matter of traditional curiosity or a deeply-felt matter of honour and prestige?
Which players are made available to compete?
As I have no interest in it, I have no knowledge other than its existence.
