World Tour Finals Day 4 thread
Poor old Day 3 didn't even get it's own thread. I won't let Day 2 steal Day 4 as well
I don't even know the order of play. Hopeless.

Re: World Tour Finals Day 4 thread
Just listening to gasquet's interview before the match on how he's improved.
Paraphrasing:
"Of course I like to play well, mix it up, different single handed backhand." ....
And we're underway!

Feds with an early break. Pretty poor from gasquet so far.

Hopefully this will be just the sort of match to give Fed a bit of confidence (sorry Gasquet).

Not the best match yet. Not helped by the usual bbc federer fawning commentary. I know he's good lads just let me watch it

Gasquet doing nothing with the ball and letting fed run the show... This'll be done and dusted in 30

Good grief JuliusHMarx & laverfan! What stupid games are you playing? This is a small world and no doubt most here are aware of it.

Really interesting interview with Novak from Mark Petchey with his analysis screen. Nice insights into how Novak reads Del Potro's serve.
These highest level players have incredible tactical intelligence.

Re: World Tour Finals Day 4 thread
I forget it word for word but it was along the lines that when Del Potro's toss was slightly to the left, Novak knew the serve was probably coming down the T.
What really came across though was that Novak had a definite approach for the style and mannerisms of Del Potro's game. Not even in the sense of "how to play a big hitter", it was specifically for Del Potro.

Im surprised he revealed that information! Fascinates me though, you can usually tell when a player is picking up the serve when he moves to one side just before its struck, its amazing how often they get it right when they do, Agassi's book when he said Beckers tongue pointed which way to go makes me laugh

That was exactly what I was thinking about when I read that interview. Aggasi mentione this Becker "tic" way back in 2007, when he was commentating during the Federer-Roddick Quarterfinal at US Open!

Really enjoyed that article (although it is now out of date as Andy has vey much arrived now too!).Roger Laver wrote:Great win for Novak!

That progression of his career is a big reason that I like Novak so much.
I like that it recognises him as an attacking player. Too often people mistake having great defensive ability with being a defensive player.

Re: World Tour Finals Day 4 thread
Djokovic really is a complete player, Rafa and Murray are as good at defending as Novak but personally I enjoy the Serbs style of depending much more entertaining, however despite being one of the greatest defenders of all time he is extremely aggressive even when he defends!

Re: World Tour Finals Day 4 thread
CAS, funnily enough, Federer said something similar after their match this week:
"It's a different type of defense than we know from Rafa or Andy Murray. So it's just different really. But overall, clearly he's known and he proves it time and time again that he's one of the best defenders in the game we've ever had."
And last year he said:
"What he does well, even in defence, he stays somewhat offensive. That, I think, is what separates him from the rest a little bit."

Re: World Tour Finals Day 4 thread
Yeah it's different from counter punchers because they use the pace of the opponents shot against them, Novak hits agressive shots against aggressive shots, the match point in last years final was an example, he didnt need the pace of Federers forehand he went for that himself but was also defending ground, that's sliding backhand is fast becoming my favourite shot to watch

Re: World Tour Finals Day 4 thread
laverfan. I have this nice image of you. I imagine that one day in the distant future we will sit down to afternoon tea (fine bone china, good quality table linen and a cake stand) and we will remissness about the good old days. Talking fondly of Fedal, Laver, Gonzalez and other long retired players.... But then I read things that totally spoil this fantasy... Sigh.laverfan wrote:JHM may be fast, but I am thick, old and slow. Please help me understand this one letter cryptic.hawkeye wrote:Good grief JuliusHMarx & laverfan!
