Who do you think has made the biggest contribution to the history of British culture?
The Culture Cup Final Round!
First topic message reminder :
OK folks so we have finally reached the end of this year’s Culture Cup. Thank the lord for that. The last round is a spectacular extravaganza with double points on offer. With the league table pretty congested at the top, this final effort will crown the first ever Cultural Champion of 606v2. The question that will separate the men from the boys is Who do you think has made the biggest contribution to the history of British culture? There are some obvious nominations and some that are very clever. One or two strange ones as well. Special thanks to compelling and rich for putting his persons achievements in brackets when he PM'd me.........how thick do you think I am, c&r!
Before we move on to that, what happened in round 10 and ‘Best song with an emotion or emotional response in the title’…..
The big winner in this round was jbeadle whose pick of Johnny Cash and Hurt helped him pick up his first ever full points haul and moves him effortlessly away from the foot of the table. Good work, beadle, good work. There were a few dissenting voices suggesting that the song should have been banned along with Joy Division and Oasis, but those shouts were too late and beadle reaps the rewards. Dolphins controversial pick was obviously not enough to deter two voters and picked him up some points which is more than can be said for Galted and ChequeredJersey who both failed to convince a single human being to vote for them. Also without a vote is my father, Julius, but it is no real surprise when you see his song choice. Tobacco chewing, female line dancers are a definite niche market. Jeff lost a point to his arch rival, superfly, and it will take the final round to establish who is the better person between them. It is like choosing between herpes and chlamydia, but there you go. Hero and compelling and rich continue to be entangled lovers and both finished joint second this round. Their fight to cultural death will be taken to the very end. The biggest travesty is that Whitney Houston managed to get any votes, let along more than The Stone Roses, INXS, Nirvana and Radiohead. I have genuinely lost faith in humanity. I can only think she got a couple of votes simply for being dead. Here is the updated league table:
Hero (FEAR): (10) 91
compelling and rich (You've Lost That Loving Feeling): (10) 88
seanmichaels (Motorcycle Emptiness): (7) 81
Azzy (Friday I'M In Love): (9) 80
TopHat (I Will Always Love You): (7) 73
Adam (Crazy): (6) 70
onlytreblewinners (Happy Birthday): (6) 65
Galted (Psycho Killer): (0) 62
bhb (Every Day I Love You Less And Less): (8) 62
Jeff (Ten Story Love Song): (5) 59
The Womble (Never Tear Us Apart): (5) 57
Dolphin (R*pe Me): (6) 57
The Boss (Still In Love With You): (5) 56
superflyweight (Paranoid Android): (6) 54
jbeadlesbigrighthand (Hurt): (12) 52
Union (Don't Fear The Reaper): (7) 51
JuliusHMarx (You Made This Love A Teardrop): (0) 44
ChequeredJersey (Feeling Good): (0) 39
So please see the poll for the last round and take your time as it is worth double points. Again, there will be no vote cancelling and only one pick is allowed.
We have a guest contributor this round with rick_dagless taking the place of Azzy who cried off like the big girls blouse he is, so can we all welcome rick into the fold and don’t bully him for being a newcomer. It's ain't big and it ain't clever. Bit like seanmichaels, in fact.
I will leave this up for a few days and then work out who is the Cultural Champion when the votes dry up.
Remember, IT IS OPEN FOR THE WHOLE FORUM TO VOTE!

Suspect Superfly does not care, am sure he has enough to fulfill himself in his real life to not worry about some battle for mid table in an online competition against some bloke he has never met. Me on the other hand, this is pretty much it for the year.

What was the world like when Johannes Gensfleisch zur Laden zum Gutenberg burst on the scene? Excitement on the streets?

Thank god for that Superfly. It means that much to me I almost picked a song I don't particularly like for the last round solely because I knew it would get shedloads of votes.

Re: The Culture Cup Final Round!
So that is it. The 2013 Culture Cup comes to an end and I, for one, am delighted that it has. It’s been a rollercoaster of emotions, we have had vote rigging, controversial choices and even a walk out before the final round. But through the smoke, like a phoenix, rises our champion and winner………step forward, Hero, and salute your people. You are officially the most cultured poster on 606v2. If you remember way back to the start, one of the prizes was 3% of the enormous advertising revenue that this place must drag in. But, seeing as you’re a founder of 606v2, the money is already weighing down your pockets so congratulations. You are our champion.
So how did the final round pan out? The question was thus; Who do you think has made the biggest contribution to the history of British culture?
As has been the case through most of the competition, Hero and compelling and rich battled it out for top spot, but Hero nicked it at the finish line. His pick of The Beatles edged out Tim Berners-Lee proving that four mop-top kids from Liverpool are more culturally important to us than the man who invented on-line pornography. Strange. The Womble eventually won the final round with William Shakespeare. This is the first round The Womble has won and with it being a double point extravaganza, his 24 points saw him leap up the table into a Europa League spot. Solid points totals for seanmichaels and our guest nominator, rick_dagless mean these pair complete the top four with TopHat just missing out on one of those coveted Champions League positions. Probably justice seeing as he picked Meatloaf and Whitney Houston in two of the music rounds.
Jeff’s pick of Brunel was enough to see him secure joint second place and eventually crush his great rival, superfly, who only managed to pick up one vote (mine, in fact) for Johannes Gensfleisch zur Laden zum Gutenberg. The fact I only really voted for Johannes Gensfleisch zur Laden zum Gutenberg because I like saying Johannes Gensfleisch zur Laden zum Gutenberg is probably justification for it not picking up more points than one of the UK’s greatest ever men (Brunel, not Jeff. Heaven forbid). Union and ChequeredJersey both failed to convince anyone to vote for them and this really wasn’t the round to come home empty handed. These two prop up the table, just behind 606v2’s grumpiest man, Julius.
So the final league looks like this;
Hero (The Beatles): (20) 111
compelling and rich (Tim Berners-Lee): (14) 102
seanmichaels (Winston Churchill): (19) 100
Azzy rick_dagless (John Logie Baird): (19) 99
TopHat (Isaac Newton): (19) 92
Adam (James Bond): (14) 84
The Womble (William Shakespeare): (24) 81
onlytreblewinners (Jeremy Kyle): (14) 79
Rowley (Isambard Kingdom Brunel): (20) 79
bhb (Christopher Wren): (16) 78
Galted (Jack the Ripper): (12) 74
Dolphin (Adolf Hitler): (12) 73
The Boss (David Jason): (12) 68
jbeadlesbigrighthand (Charles Dickens): (16) 68
superflyweight (Johannes Gensfleisch zur Laden zum Gutenberg): (12) 66
JuliusHMarx (Richard Branson): (12) 56
Union (Simon Cranny): (0) 51
ChequeredJersey (0) 39
So well done to Hero and commiserations to rest of you losers.
Thanks to all those who took part and voted.

Re: The Culture Cup Final Round!
So Jeremy Kyle got more votes than Gutenberg.
Well done for running the whole thing. Despite the lack of rounds for silent films, WWI poets and best vaudeville act 1910-1925, it was a effort worthy of my grudging congratulations - which is the most I ever offer.

Great stuff Tino, glad to have finished in a respectable position despite picking the likes of Jeremy Kyle and Cascada
I'm not very up on music, but I'll take part as long as there's a round where I get a certain pick

though after seeing how far jeremy kyle (I am not even giving him capital name letters) finished up means that a small piece of me has died inside...

Is top hat allowed to enter? His tastes in music have been something of an eye opener over the last few weeks. As a consequence of his picks over the last few weeks and his general contempt for the poor I cannot now help but think of him as Patrick Bateman, albeit an extremely fatter version.

Pirate METAL? Does that even exist?
The answer is no but there will be a round on best Northern Line songs if you're still interested.

I am struggling to come up with a collection of words or genre less likely to make me check a band out than fantasy folk metal.
