Culture Cup round 2: Best song never to reach UK top 5
The Culture Cup round 2.
OK, after the roaring success of round one, here is the roundup.
Round 1 threw up a few surprises, not least seanmichaels claiming first place and Galted close behind in second. Not the section of the league that these two usually frequent. It was clearly incorrect because To Kill a Mockingbird is obviously superior to Lord of the Rings but there is nowt as queer as folk and the good people of 606v2 have spoken. They have also spoken enough to garner Niall Quinn's autobiography some votes and some points, despite the p*ss taking throughout.
Adam has made his usual solid start, taking third place which is one below where he will inevitably end up. Perhaps the biggest surprise is that Union finished with a vote and some points. Remarkable.
Table after round 1;
seanmichaels (Lord of the Rings): 12
Galted (To Kill a Mockingbird): 10
Adam (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory): 8
Hero (Fantastic Mr Fox): 7
Dolphin Ziggler (Hitchikers Guide to the galaxy): 6
onlytreblewinners (Strange case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde): 5
Azzy (Moby Dick): 5
compelling & rich (Storm of Swords): 4
The Boss (Niall Quinn's autobiography): 4
Jbeadlesbigrighthand (The Old Man and the Sea): 4
The Womble (A Kestral For A Knave): 3
Superflyweight (Trainspotting): 3
Julius (The Big Sleep): 2
Rowley (The Godfather): 2
Union (The Dogs of War): 2
TopHat (Rage): 2
ChequeredJersey (The Kindly Ones): 0
bhb (The Ragged Trousered Philantropists): 0
Question 3: What is the best film released since the turn of the century? Culture isn't limited to old sh*t so what is the best film released since the 1st January 2000. This should eliminate some people choosing old films that they haven't actually seen but come near the top of best film lists. It can be re-releases if you want, animated films, porn, whatever you think deserves a mention. Fo' shizzle.
Please PM me your answers and pick a couple of choices. As usual, if you don't get your first pick I will let you know.
Please see the poll for round 2. Please vote for your top 2 and remember, It is open for the whole forum to vote.
Thanks.

Really strong list of songs for this round, one or two exceptions.
I have gone for Heroes as it is simply one of the greatest songs ever and Should I stay or should I go by The Clash as they are one of my favourite bands and it is a cracking song.

Went for 'Little Red Corvette' and 'Stairway to Heaven' myself. First one an automatic choice, but had to deliberate a bit over the other pick.

Went for my own choice, which I know is a bit scummy but I genuinely think it is the best song on there. Love the Clash but don't think Should I stay is one of their better moments. Went for Teenage Kicks as my other choice as it is a truly brilliant song. Some good choices on there, and Union's.

really struggled ordering my films for the next vote, ended up going for a quite popular one as first pick but did really love it, my second pick was probably what you would consider slightly more cultural than my first but equally as good

i know i was really torn!! but just because one was a big blockbuster doesn't mean it wasn't brilliant. hadn't left the cinema for a long time enjoying a film as much as that. number 2 was a dvd watchMind the windows Tino. wrote:If you want my opinion, C&R, you should have gone with your second choice. As for the next round I highly expect, judging by the mentality of some members, The Dark Knight to win. There are to many people on here who believe that film is the greatest thing since Jesus invented sliced white.

Booom!!
Not going to go for my choice again on this one. The Clash are possibly my favourite band but SISOSIG and This is England aren't favourite tunes. If it had been Safe European Home or Tommy Gun....
Marvin Gaye and Bowie for me.

i thought it was a great film, ledgers performance was fantastic. while i can understand people not thinking its the greatest film of all time i dont see where all the hate comes from either. not many people ive met that didn't think it was a great film. seems like anything that's popular these days gets scorn because of a few who over hype itGalted wrote:If that's the case hopefully I can do all my picks for the remaining rounds before I get a ban for the volume of abuse that will follow. The Womble wrote:As for the next round I highly expect, judging by the mentality of some members, The Dark Knight to win. Went for REM as an easy first choice and The Undertones as a not-so-easy next choice.
Think my choice is better than both my picks, but as a man of principle I have once again refrained from voting for myself.

I would like to point out that the first release of Stairway to Heaven (by Rolf Harris) got to number 1.
LED Zepplin didnt release Stairway in the UK until 2007 when it became available on a download.

I am only doing this as I know I will completely bomb in the next round!

I don't hate The Dark Knight, I have never hated it. In fact I think it is a good film but some people have orgasms over it. When I saw it at the cinema, there was a group of lads in front of us as we were leaving and one of them said "I can die happy now, no one has or will ever make anything as good as that". Really?? You honestly think that? Take the rose tinted glasses off. It's reputation has been enhanced since Ledger died. I honestly think it would not have had the hype if he still been alive.compelling and rich wrote:i thought it was a great film, ledgers performance was fantastic. while i can understand people not thinking its the greatest film of all time i dont see where all the hate comes from either. not many people ive met that didn't think it was a great film. seems like anything that's popular these days gets scorn because of a few who over hype itGalted wrote:If that's the case hopefully I can do all my picks for the remaining rounds before I get a ban for the volume of abuse that will follow. The Womble wrote:As for the next round I highly expect, judging by the mentality of some members, The Dark Knight to win. My brother was best mates with someone who was a mate of the bassist from Gomez whilst they were all studying at Bradford University. Apparently these lyrics (Whippin Piccadilly) refer to the 'Kung Fu' arcade game present in the Bradford Union at the time:Mind the windows Tino. wrote:That is an awesome music anecdote, bhb.bhb001 wrote:I was tempted to go for my own, but resisted it on this occasion. You've almost hit the nail on the head - the "hatred" is irritation caused by the multitude who over-hype it. It's an ok film with ok performances, don't think Ledger's is anything out of the ordinary. I saw a film once that was basically a remake of Jaws but with Christmas Trees instead of a shark.
I can't remember what it was called, or whether it was made after 2000, but it was absolutely terrible.
