Favourite Christmas Film
With that time of year sprinting towards us, and with seeing ELF on the TV listings, I was wondering what your favourite Christmas film is.
I suppose it can be a bit vague, as any film which is set at Christmas, could be considered one.
Anyway, mine, in no particular order, are:
ELF
Die Hard
Trading Places
Home Alone
Jack Frost
Scrooged

Die Hard is #1.
But then there's Home Alone too, Jingle All the Way (I know...) and also the santa clause

Great film and utterly re-watchable, but if I'm being honest, I prefer Home Alone. Die Hard, Lethal Weapon and Gremlins are my other favourites.Rowley wrote:It's a Wonderful Life for me, tears to a glass eye stuff that.

I wouldn't rank it with my favourites but I must admit I still laugh everytime I watch the scene after Tim Allen has had the botox injections

Re: Favourite Christmas Film
Plenty of Die Hard mentions, but what about Die Hard 2? That was also a Christmas film and a great film!
Other than Die Hard 1 and 2, Elf, Home Alone, Nightmare before Christmas and Bad Santa.

Is Die Hard really a Christmas film. I would consider it a film set at Christmas rather than a Christmas film.

The reason he gets to clamber through air ducting is because of a xmas party, so I would say it is a Christmas film.Rowley wrote:Is Die Hard really a Christmas film. I would consider it a film set at Christmas rather than a Christmas film.

Re: Favourite Christmas Film
Saw Alistair Sim in Scrooge when I was a kid.........Amazing job..
He was downright intimidating as Scrooge and then transformed himself brilliantly.........Hugely moving film and the definitive Christmas carol........
Saw Sim also in GREEN FOR DANGER a wonderful murder mystery......Highly recommend it...
Wonderful wonderful actor who deserves more credit than he seems to get.

The Me'm Sahib insists on watching Love Actually at some time during the Christmas season every year. I wouldn't watch it, myself, but she insists so I sit there and go along with it. Honest.
Polar Express is a Christmas classic, as is Home Alone. Of course, I can now sit and watch them with the grandchildren and pretend that they're the reason I'm watching.
Trading Places with Dan Ackroyd and Eddie Murphy is an enjoyable watch, as is The Nightmare Before Christmas, just for it's sheer originality.
Hans Christian Anderson, starring Danny Kaye, is great for the songs and where would we be without dear old White Christmas itself, somewhere in the schedules.
Agree with Trussman that Alistair Sim was the best Ebenezer, although Bill Murray made a good fist of the role in his own inimitable way in Scrooged.
Other movies that I like, to get me into the Yuletide mood include:
Holiday Affair (Robert Mitchum and Janet Leigh)
Holiday Inn (Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire. Songs by Irving Berlin. Sheer magic)
Santa Claus (Dudley Moore, John Lithgow)
Beyond Tomorrow (Harry Carey, C Aubrey Smith)

Love Scrooged.
Have vowed to watch "It's a Wonderful Life" this year. Every year I record it and end up deleting it in January, which would obviously be the worst month to watch a Christmas movie.

Recommend Home Alone, but only the first film. The sequel was pretty same-ish and there is only so much enjoyment you can derive from seeing Joe Pesci getting a brick in his face.

Re: Favourite Christmas Film
A Nightmare Before Christmas...perfect Xmas Eve viewing.
Jingle All The Way is another one I find strangely appealing, for some reason, as well as The Grinch, which someone already mentioned.
Other than that, there aren't many Christmas films (i.e. ones specifically about Christmas, rather than just set around that time of year) that I really care to watch. I generally find them far too corny, cliched/predictable or just sickeningly cutesy.

Nightmare before Christmas is my number one.
Few others, a Christmas story, muppets Christmas carol.
Don't class films set at Christmas as Christmas films, die hard clearly isn't a Christmas film!!!

If Die Hard is included then so must Batman Returns
If we are just counting movies that are based around Christmas (like the two mentioned in the previous sentence) then I'd have to say the best of the lot would have to be Stalag 17.
