We will play a fast paced, high intensity offloading game looking to create space for our halfbacks and to get our back three onto the ball as much possible.

Target the scrum. Good technical front row supported by plenty of grunt will look to get on top and win penalties.

Attack from the lineout. Five genuine jumping options allows us to mix it up and really use the lineout as an attacking platform. Look to get the ball to Sexton and Eastmond with space outside.

Look to mix up play. Sexton & Eastmond to interchange at first receiver and change the point of attack. Care provides a threat snipping around the base.

Get the back three involved. Zebo, Gilroy and Abendanon all to run lines looking for the inside ball or offload to get in behind the opposition defence.

Hit the breakdown hard. Look to our dynamic front five to clear the ruck and allow the likes of Todd & Quedragao to really attack the breakdown.

Straight line blitz defence focusing on a quick line speed to isolate the ball carrier before the gain line. Care to sweep in behind to cover chips and grubbers.

Counter the Worc kicking game with our wingers sitting deep on defence to prevent kicks in behind. They will look to run the ball back with interest.

Tactics

- Play a territorial game. Look for our half backs to get us in to the right areas of the pitch. Use big ball carriers like AJ, Russouw, Waldrom, Mujati and Big Bast to drive forward and use a power game to attack. Once defenders are committed we will use the ball and get FTD pulling the strings and bring Armitage, Tagi, Mermoz etc in to play.
- Yachvili to kick all pens for goal to keep scoreboard kicking over.
- Muller to call the lineout and be our main go to man.
- Look to use the rolling maul to good effect and win pens or at least gain territorial advantage.

Tactics

Key Points

  • After a break from the AP, the whole squad look to pick up from where they left off in some good form.

  • Mobile pack picked to dominate the set-pieces and breakdown.

  • Use the strong forward bench to maintain forward pressure late on and control of the game.

  • Strong spine in decision making positions of the team. Basic territorial game in conditions. Utilise good territory for attacking opportunities.

  • Flood will kick all points available, he can kick from within their half, so this indicates that Sarries should be wary of giving away penalties.

  • Home territory - At home Sandy Park is a fortress, and at home we make a fight out of the game and rarely lose.

  • 6-2 split on the bench to combat the forward physicality late on and shift momentum.

Game plan

Selected a physically strong side to combat the physicality of the Sarries side. Chiefs won't look to get drawn into a physical fight however, as they will look to open up the game to allow their backs a chance to attack the Sarries back line. The side has the potential to play an all code game, therefore if one aspect of the game isn't working we can shift and adapt to start exploiting an area which gives us the advantage.
We will look to play a simple territorial game and look to be playing with the ball within their 22. Every where else on the pitch we will look to peg Sarries back, unless we can take the kick for goal. Simple set-piece game which we look to dominate our own ball, and contest every opposition put in. The pack that has been selected is mobile and strong around the park, especially in the tackle, on the floor and ball in hand.

Attack

  • Use quick ball off the top using Parling as primary caller. Parling and our jumpers should be much more quicker getting up in the air so look for quick mauls. With the big pack look to set the maul in the opponents 22.

  • Look to set the scrum quickly and strike the ball to the back. Not looking to get into a scrum fight which will end up with penalties going to either side. This is to allow Williams to attack off the base of the scrum.

  • Pack filled big carriers to provide a number of options in the tight exchanges. Look to keep moving the point of attack with clever offloads and forward interplay. Look for forward pods outside the third guard in the line to really stretch their defences and get over the gain line to create momentum.

  • Look to flood the breakdown and clear out bodies, to keep ball clean so that the halfbacks can dictate the game. (Eg AB's or Eng vs AB 2012 style)

  • Look to use a league style move to unlock the defence. Saili can either take it short and through gaps or it can be screened to Rougerie with the 14, and 15 to attack the numbers outside.

Defence

  • We will use a Blitz drift line in defence to cut down Taylor's options and push him inside towards our back-row.

  • Machenaud to sweep behind the defencive line, and to counter any loose kicks or turnover ball - either by quickly shipping it wide to the back three, or kicking in behind their back three.

  • The whole pack is mobile and capable of getting over the ball at the breakdown. Look to powerfully clear opponents out of the ruck, and use the strong tackling to keep chopping down the Sarries runners.

  • If we kick in behind their back-line or back three, we look to at least make them have to turn into an advancing black line which will not allow the receiver time to make decision or escape with clean ball. Every kick to be chased, the kick is as only as good as the chase.

Tactics:

General - We've selected a team packed with power and physicality and will look to dominate the contact and get over the gain line. We'll be playing a high tempo physical game from the off, look to smash the opposition back and get into the rucks/maul's and drive through. We'll look to tie the opposition in and then get at their backline, more so in the their half. Look to keep it tight in the forward pack and grind through work.

Scrum - Look to get a platform and keep the ball in on attacking ball if a weakness is seen in the opposition set piece. With our big locks look for the big push once the ball is in and drive the opposition back. Our LH and Hooker will loo to target Collier and try to get between him and Webber to allow JdP to work on Mulipola. The Exeter front row has struggled with the new laws so we'll look to really turn the screw on here.

Line out - Look to play it safe and use the rolling maul to good effect. Our big pack should have a lot of joy here and will tie in the opposition defence. We won't be going for the rear of the line out much and will be content with securing our own ball and getting a push on. We'll look to contest on opp throw and target Webber to see if we can disrupt him early on(Bath have tone of the worst lineouts in the AP)

Defence - High intensity and big hits, looking to drive past the ball player. Huge physical pack that can look to dominate the collision and breakdown allowing Smith etc a chance to slow down/steal ball. Scrum half to sweep behind the defensive line.

Attack - Keep things simple in our own half then look to unleash backs in opp territory. Scrum half to inject pace from the breakdown and have JD on his shoulder. Burrell to run at 9/10 channel and target possible weakness. Burrell to be used as decoy running at Saili looking to take him out of the defensive line to free up space for JD to get at Rougerie on the outside. Look to alternate Fearns/JVN depending on the scrum, look to use Fearns off the base running at Myler.

Points -

Front row form and the new laws - The Exeter props have struggled a bit with the new laws, we've got a strong unit (JdP thriving under new laws) backed up by a serious scrummaging lock combo, we could get a big advantage here.

Rolling maul and physicality - Look to use our physicality and drive through the opp defence, if weakness seen look to exploit.

Taylor - In great kicking form and will look to keep us ahead on the score board

JD kicking - look for him to use the grubber to get behind Rougerie who lacks a bit of turning pace these days

Look to get JD one on one with Rougerie and look to beat him outside

Form - We're putting some serious form together, beating Falcons at home was a serious scalp that has shown we are good enough to compete with the best

Op 10/12 channel - Saili still beddinbg in and look to disrupt him early on in a key position

Front row bench - Strong scrummaging front row options, look to really work on Mulipola so we can get a shot at Hepburn

Tactics

Get our big carriers across the gainline to get us quick ball to play with.

At the set piece look to milk any advantage we might get.

Look to retain possession in opposition half before spreading the ball wide as gaps appear.

Kick all points as win is vital. If game secure look to target tries.

Quick line speed in defence targeting key Gloucester play makers.

At the breakdown look to legally slow down Gloucester ball with Braid the main operator.

Win collisions in attack and defence. When carrying carry ball in numbers so to allow quick ruck ball or to provide support for the offload.

Tactics
Scrum

Look to pressure there ball with figallo really targeting Jgenti. On our put in we are looking to get the ball out quickly as we want the ball in Carter's
Hands

Line out

With croft gray and Robson we can look to disrupt a prime source of possession for Quins. On our ball we will drive a lot of ball in our half and use off the top more in their half.

General

We have a mobile pack chock full of footballing forwards. We will be looking to get over the gainline  and look to offload to get in behind them. We want quick ball for our half backs so we can attack
Our quicker more dynamic pack will target the breakdown with salvi trying to pilfer. If Burns radar as is off
As it has been this season it
Will allow us to really push it at the
Breakdown
Backs

We aim to dictate this game through Pernara and carter.

Carter will kick a lot to build the game. He will target in behind halal and co and look to dominate the field position. If they kick it out we believe our line out will deliver and help us keep the ball and build
Pressure in the right part of the field.

When in the right part of the field pernara
And carter will look to up the pace and  force the game with our slicker backline. We will look to really stretch them and create mismatches.

We will use bench as necessary and look to moves figallo to 1
And bring on JJ.

Carter will take any kicks in range and with his goal kicking skills it will force Quins to no give away pens and allow us to play more.

Tactics:

We will play to our strengths and play a game built around our intelligent HB's controlling the game and the power and strength of our side.

Attack at all scrums with our huge pack - Cole and Sheridan to look to really get into the opposition. An area we will look to target if winning.

Attack at all lineouts. Use Joubert or Hines at the front and Mafi or Myall off the top as our four key options.
Shortened lineouts with Burger in midfield as crash or decoy option

- Put serious pressure on Lindsay's throws with Joubert at the front on all Irish's throws.

Gigantic pack made up of massive line-breakers, used in the tight to tire down the Irish defence. The likes of Mafi, Burger, Hines, Ralepelle and Myall to be used to target the Irish 10/12 channel.

- In attacking play, we will look to get runners attacking the gain line looking for gapsWe do want to control the game, mixing up the point of our attack and looking for where the gaps are.

Target the Irish back three if looking vulnerable. Look to the in-form Mike Brown to win the 15 battle and give us counter-attacking options as much as possible.

- We will look to employ a blitz defence, focusing on a quick line speed to hit the ball carrier before he gets to the gainline. We have aggressive forwards to carry out this instruction. Peel to sweep behind with an eye on short kicks.

- Target the last 30 mins. Unload our bench to see the game out for the win.

- Wilkinson to kick all penalties.

Key Points

Balanced Backrow
We have picked a big backrow who are well balanced. Higginbotham will look to be abrasive and run at 10 looking to put him off his game. Fraser will look to dismantle the breakdown. Morgan will look to carry the ball all day and be the link man.

8-9-10-12-13
We want quick ball for our half-backs to tactically put us into territory (off the pitch). Our 8-9-10-12-13 will look to be influential and all have played together in this game alot so know each other well. These can all be standout playmakers who will look to control the game at our tempo in the light rain we will not expect attractive rugby.

Lineouts
Our lineouts have been picked on and targetting quite often however, we have selected a team with powerful lifters and consistent jumpers so Lindsay will be used to their jumping. Any messy lineouts will go to the prop standing at the front and driven on. We will look to maul alot of ball if it is not on.

Attacking

  • We want to force errors from and will target the 12 channel by sending big runners down his channel.

  • Kockott and Evans to play what's in front of them and look to McAlister who will look to play in Smith or snipe as much as possible. If it isn't on then Evans will stick it in the corners and, with Kennedy, Hooper, Higginbotham we have the number jumpers to gain the ball back, we know they will be dangerous here so will look to avoid his area and mix up our lineouts.

  • Look for runners off of 10 and 12 channel to make the initial break before sending the ball out wide to Basson and Cummins.

  • We will look to use our big pack to carry alot of ball and, if it isn't on then run off of 9 and take a couple of 'up the jumper' phases to drag defenders in.

  • Our back three will look to come off their wings and hit the right angles.

  • Power to close out the win in Elliott, Stevens and Clarke, Jackson will have a field day against tired legs, excitement to continue to target the tired players through MDe Kock's sniping, heavy impact at the scrum to come on and Trinder and Geraghty can continue to control the game and bring further excitement and pace..

Set Piece

  • Strong scrum which will get the edge up on the Jones and a good bench to come on as well to continue the pressure, 8-9-10 is a move we will use alot.

  • We will use the maul to get ourselves up the pitch quickly and power over from short distance.

  • Lineout has been mentioned previously where we have many strong jumpers here who will look to control attacking and defensive ones.

Defending

  • Banana blitz defence targetting slowing down the ball led by McAlister so he has no time to kick or give quick ball to the centres (we will have a backrower on Evans's shoulder to look for quick turnover ball, we will protect the channels to stop 9 sniping.

  • Kockott will look to sweep and counter attack off any kick through's.

  • We will hit the breakdown quick to give Fraser time to get over the ball and obliterate any protection they have in place.

  • If the turnover isn't on we won't commit and will fan out defending inside-out.

Key Points

  • Scrum.  We will target this relentlessly.  Bath have signed 3 props on loan today who go straight into their matchday squad.  There is no way on earth their scrum can be well drilled and function as a unit.

  • Form.  We have lost once this season in all competitions.  Bath essentially have been drubbed two weeks running and can have no confidence at all.

Basic Game Plan
In dry conditions we will be looking to play a fast paced offloading game, utilising big carriers with pacy backs on their sholders to take the offloads and hit the gaps.  We will look to shift the point of attack and keep the ball moving.  Our back row will look to support and hit rucks hard to free up quick ball.  Our intention is to utilize our strength, which is pace and mobility, and move the Bath pack around to tire them and create space for our runners.

In defence, as always we will be running a blitz defence.  Our focus will be on the gainline collisions and driving back in the tackle.  Line speed and no dog-legs will be key components for us.  Tillouse-Borde will sweep in behind the defensive line to counter any chips/grubbers.

Specifics

  • No time to do them due to Bath’s team being submitted after the Wednesday deadline and me being busy this evening.

Overall: Look to play flowing rugby with Hodgson pulling the strings. We will be looking for big carries all over to get over the gainline.

Scrum: We will look to get an advantage at scrum time with a strong front five picked. Apply pressure and look to get nudge on throughout. Look to play the ref and if not going our way use as a restart.

Lineout: At the line out we will look to keep our own ball and challenge the Irish line out. Kitchener offers a strong banker ball option at the front whilst Bekker and Lobbe offer solid jumping options.

We will be looking for big carries from the forwards with the likes of Hibbard, Crane, Kitchener, Lobbe and Haskell dangerous runners who can really create gaps for our backs. We will be looking for lots of energy from our forwards to open up holes to be exploited.

Breakdown: Look to clear hard and fast with Haskell and Lobbe looking to make a real nuisance of themselves and get their hands on the ball

Backs: We will be looking to use the backs in order to create or go through holes. FDP and Hodgson will look to really get the backs going with a good tempo. FDP will attack fringes and try to keep the defence guessing. Look to get our big runners involved as early as possible with Allen, Cave, Hogg and Nalaga seeing lots of the ball.

Defence: Use an blitz defence in order to put pressure on Wasps.

Substitutes: Our subs will look to keep a high tempo.

Aviva Premiership Round Eight - Page 2 Empty Re: Aviva Premiership Round Eight

Post by prop_lyd Fri Nov 22, 2013 5:23 pm

Yeah I lost Gorgodze a few times.

Sale 23-22 Worcester
SP: Sale have a bit more power here.
BK: Feel Sale can bring more international experience to the party.
HB: Swapping Sexton out edges this battle to Warriors but Care doing well.
OB: More for Sale here.
BE: Both teams down players and both can make a slight impact.
TA: Sale use their power up front well in their tactics. Not a lot from Warriors but feel they have met their match up front.

Chiefs 20-22 Sarries
SP: A good battle here from both sides, can't split it easily.
BK: Sarries bringing a bit more international experience but Willams will make yards for Chiefs.
HB: Bit more for Chiefs.
OB: Sarries a step up here with a dangerous backline.
BE: Not a lot between the two.
TA: Chiefs set out well using Willams' power and can see their flooding of the breakdown helping them win the ball but it will be slow. Sarries using their power well and can see the Burrell-Davies partnership flourishing.

Quins 18-20 Glos
SP: Glos looking stronger here come scrum time.
BK: Not a lot to split, 2 good set ups.
HB: More for Glos here.
OB: Both set ups look good, feel the Glos centre partnerships just edges this.
BE: Both teams a man down but think Glos bring a bit more.
TA: Not a lot from Quins, good to see Glos bringing out more tactics and I feel dictating this from the half backs will take it.

Wasps 28-22 Bath
SP: Great battle but feel Corbs will gain an edge.
BK: Fantastic battle again here, see Wasps gaining a sloght advantage.
HB: 9 to Bath, 10 to Wasps.
OB: Wasps looking more set, feel Bath could get something with Hogg on the counter attack.
BE: More from Wasps here.
TA: Wasps targeting the right weaknesses, especially in the front row. Bath using their carriers well but have a feeling that they may not get too much space in this match.

Saints 20-20 Falcons
SP: Huge battle, tough to split but thinks Saints could get a little give from the Falcons, Falcons will come back strong though so evens.
BK: Again can't split these two partnerships.
HB: Close battle but think a small edge to Falcons with Gopperth settling in nicely at Leinster.
OB: Again such a difficult game to split, don't like sitting on the fence here.
BE: Great impact from both teams here.
TA: None from both side dampens this match. Sorry guys but this looks like a completely even match-up and I will give it a draw, feel Saints do have great power to run into a lead but Falcons have calm heads on the pitch who will be able to pull the game back.

Int weeks only you name a team as per usual, but if a player is selected you may take him out? Only way to do it really.

I think we do need to stick to a cut off and just be harsh. I'd say that if someone doesn't notify SirJ and their opposition of a change by Friday at 9am and this is only if a player is called up on international duty so would only be relevant on R.C,A.I and 6N weekends?

Any other week then the cut off for teams is Wednesday evening with tactics on the Thursday

100% agree mate. Don't feel hard done by just using it as an example. Think props version works best and should be adopted

Guys did tactics around the same time as SJE did this morning, so they are there just not up on the thread at all.

Hard one during the AIs to always get players in as so many changes all the time, so is difficult to select players on a Tues/Weds when a team is announced on a Thurs. Agree that you need to stick to handing in team sheets on time, but maybe in future during AIs teams can be announced Thursday afternoon?

My view is that it's simple. If you know a player of yours is in an international squad and you select him and he then gets named in the his national side, then tough, you are a man down. In the case of somebody not originally named in an international side who ends up playing as somebody gets injured the day before or in the warm up, then I don't think you should be penalised. All this waiting for international sides to be named is nonsense, you pick your team and if you want to take a chance on someone in an international squad then you have to wear the penalty if h's selected.

I like Chris's idea of a Thursday cut off during Int periods.

Gives you plenty of chance to name a side with most teams being named by Thursday.

I've a fairly similar view of things to Pete. I picked Sexton this week knowing it was 50/50 to whether he would play for Ireland. Didn't pay off so I'm happy to take the man down.

Want to be fair though and get a majority view. See Props system working well as the Tue/Wed deadline was brought in for a reason so don't see the point of extending teamsheets to Thursday. Would you all be happy with it?

Happy with whatever majority want . Without submitted teams it means everything is stretched and I think home
Team Tuesday has worked. Think maybe in AI's a bit of
Flex needed as teams experiment. Rhodri jones Allan Mullan etc all left field picks. RC and 6n squads smaller and more
Realistic

Yeah mate see the homepage looking to bring in score adjustments for missing the deadline. Seems to work well in the football games.

At the moment looking at team sheets named by the usual respective deadlines. If a players called up changes have to be made by 9am Friday so the thread can be updated. Past that its tough luck you're a man down. However last minute injury replacements won't be punished like the Luatua situation.

People will have to be aware for internationals played on Sunday theres a chance the side won't be named till Friday so will have to take that risk into consideration!

Leicester 21-21 Irish

FR - A small edge to Leicester, both TH's have had little issues with the new rules but good contest
SR - again a little but more for the home side. Good line out battle with both sides holding
BR - Irish stronger here in each position, will cause some issues to Tigers ball

HB - Irish a step up, especially at 9
CE - much stronger for Irish
B3 - good contest, Tigers shade but not much in it
Overall - I thought Tigers would run away with this but 6-13 Irish really step it up and will cause Tigers all sorts of problems. Can't see past a tough fought draw

London Wasps 24-20 Bath

FR - good scrummaging props for Wasps, Bath unit solid with Barcella/Hibbard axis strong but limited time together will hinder
SR - bit more for Bath, can see them edging line out also with strong jumpers and Fourie poor darts
BR - good contest at 7, Bath big step up at 6 and edge at 8.

HB - Bath unit a step up in quality and being able to provide an attacking platform
CE - good contest, not much in it
B3 - some cracking players on show, step us for Wasps, Tomkins lacks the pace for wing
Overall - aside from the front row Bath have a lot of quality out and can see Hodgson bringing the most out of their backline. Wasps keep on top in the scrum and Farrell will keep getting the 3pts, the mismatched wings are the killer for Bath with Wasps able to exploit. Short bench will allow Wasps to get on top in final 20.

Northampton 17-17 Falcons

FR - see Saints getting a little edge, not much in it though
SR - a bit more for Falcons, especially in the line out.
BR - not much in it, don't know much about Saints 8 so have to give Falcons edge

HB - Decent step up for Falcons, esp at 9
CE - cracking battle, like both units but Saints edge
B3 - not often you see Saints B3 bettered but Falcons very strong, bit of everything.
Overall - another really tight one, Falcons very strong and will pin Saints back. Just can't give them the win without a game plan though. Lack of tactics keeps score down.

Not sure how Jane vs. Yarde would be a contest POoly, as Jane is playing for the All Blacks so not playing for Bath in this game. Likewise Nalaga playing for Fiji.

Sale 24-23 Worcester
What's happened with Sexton as is starting for Ireland I think? I've done my score on the basis that he isn't playing for Sale, makes it a close game and Worcester might have benefitted if they had a more experienced prop than Nathan Catt.

Chiefs 22-21 Sarries
Really tough game to call, Sarries do have the better backs on paper in the backline but a real consideration for me is the number of changes to the squad and how long it would take them all to click. Once it does that backline has tries written all over it. Forward battle very even, Floods gk'ing will get Chiefs the narrowest of wins, few more weeks and scoreline completely different. Sarries can get some joy at scrum, but conditions let Fluxy get away with that.

Quins 25-25 Glos
Had Gloucester winning this until Mat lost his sub scrum half, Robson is a good player but still inexperienced and having the NZ'er would have made a difference there to bring on. Mat has tactics spot on with the kicking and territory and Carter is the guy to do this, but the carriers that Steve has in this game is very impressive. Not sure how powerful the Quins second row is, and that was the main thing that stopped me thinking Quins could win this one.

Tigers 28 - 27 Irish
Another great game in prospect and Irish will run TIgers very close, especially with Morgan coming into some great form. The Tigers pack is just a little too powerful for me at home. Though at the same time I can see IRish getting some joy in the backs.

Wasps 30-23 Bath
Game is relatively tight until 55-60 minute mark where the subs will have a huge bearing on the game and Bath will come unstuck, Tomkins will struggle out wide defensively. Would have been a lot closer, very unlucky with the call ups!

Sale 24 - 25 Worcester

Just about edge to Worcs up front, and think they're int class can get on top in the second row too. Two powerful back rows with two good units, maybe bit more quality from Sale. Picamoles form might be an issue for SJE moving forward. Packs are pretty close, maybe Worcs shade it. JJ a big step down from Sexton, and see Worcs gaining an advantage at HB with an experienced combo. Two deecemt back lines, ovreall Sale have a bit more thtreat for me. Both benches affected by call ups. Worcs have a big chance here. For me they edge the pack and HB's, and I think they can nick a great win.

Chiefs 22 - 21 Saracens

Not a lot in a good front row contest. Slight edge to Chiefs with their international pairing that work well together. Sarries got more in the back row, and the packs overall is a really close battle. Prefer the home side at HB, but Sarries looking great at centre - Chiefs no mugs though. Not a lot in the back threes with two good units. Relly struggling to split these two. I think home advantage saves CHiefs, and they nick it at the death.

Sale Sharks 29 Worcester Warriors 31

At first glance this is tight. Both teams lose 1 having gambled on international duty, but it's a more key man for Sale which gives Worcester and immediate edge. Front 5 is a good battle in terms of abilities, although Worcester lose a bit with Nathan Catt, but that is countered by them having some real leadership in that area in Muller. I like both back rows and they work as units. In the half backs I go 9 to Sale and 10 to Worcester. Both backlines have a huge amount of threat in them, and as a result this for me is a high scorer. Worcester will miss Bastareaud's carrying ability, but that is countered by having some really strong carriers in the back. Overall I think Worcester have the game to win it. Conditions are great and Sale are going to play from deep, which they will get some joy from, but could also make some errors from with a last minute 10 replacement. Worcester a little more circumspect with Yachvili putting them in the right areas and playing from there, and I think that is key to them sneaking a win here.

Exeter Chiefs 23 Saracens 24

Has taken me a while to pick through the pack battle, but I think as a unit Saracens shade it. In the scrum I can see Mullan getting well on top of Collier, with JdP more than capable of anchoring his side against Mulipola. Pierre and Deacon are also a grunty enough lock pairing to counter the advantage of having Brad Thorn in the scrum. Strong experienced back row for Sarries as well and I think they can get an advantage in most areas, with the lineout being even. Both backlines are good and look set to pay, but for me Sarries have the better platform to do it, and as a result nick a tight one.
