PS4 is fastest-selling console in UK history

According to trade paper MCV the PlayStation 4 sold a gigantic 250,000 consoles in just 48 hours, well ahead of last week’s total for the Xbox One of 150,000.

That means the PlayStation 4 generated around £48 million in sales in just days. Embarrassingly for Nintendo it also means that both new consoles have already outsold the Wii U’s lifetime total in the UK – which it took a year to accrue – in just a couple of days.

Sony’s new console has beaten the records of both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox One, to become gaming’s most successful launch.

Surprisingly, the record the PlayStation 4 had to beat was that of the PSP, which sold 185,000 units when it was released in 2005 in the UK.

That just goes to show that initial success is no indication of continued relevance, but even so Sony couldn’t have asked for a better start.

The exact sales figure of the PlayStation 4 hasn’t been revealed, but according to unofficial figures the Xbox One sold around 150,000 units when it was released last week.
