Varsity Match - The Shame of Sam Egerton
Dark Blues scrum half Sam Egerton has become the first player in the 100+ year history of the Varsity Rugby match to be dismissed from the field.
Shown the red card on 50 minutes for foul play. He had, up to that point, been having an excellent game and had run in Oxford's third try only seven minutes prior to the incident.
With Oxford leading 20 - 10, and the dark blues completely demolishing the Cambridge scrum, this could be a game changer.
A very sad and sorry incident and Egerton has made a 'first' that nobody would ever want to see in this most illustrious of representative matches. It's certainly taken the gloss off what, up to now, has been a very good game of rugby.
A black day for this fine old fixture.

what did he do was it henious like eye gouging or just a bad tackle like warburtons ? i'm surprised this is the first red...university matches i've been to there are usually a few punches and sly stamps especially in derby games. I suppose to get a red card back in the day at an Oxbridge match you would have had to do something really bad, like wear the wrong weave of half time tweed.

It was a gouge. He will probably regret it for a good while and then it will be forgotten about.

Was a decent game but Oxford unfortunately easily good for the win. They murdered the Cambridge scrum and dominated territory, and when Cambridge got the ball in attacking positions, every player seemed desperate to be the one to score a try and thus they made awful decisions and ignored several clear scoring opportunities for players outside them. Well won Oxford
