The fiend! The cad! The bounder! Brazenly offering people a chocolate. He should be locked up.

Has he asked the press to join in a training session ? That would definitely 'sweaten' them up.

Um... blush. I'm not quite sure that would have the same effect

To his credit Novak himself looked a little sheepish about continuing with this "tradition".

These people forgot to bring chocolates to the press conference while announcing the Deal No Deal.

I found that endearingly odd. Novak just seems a guy I'd love to hang out with... He does so many odd things!

"Relax, enjoy, come on - it's free," he coaxed as he walked among a throng of journalists offering round a box of chocolates yesterday.
"You're all asking such serious questions," he added, explaining that he was making it a tradition to treat the media to a "sweet delight" in his first and last official press conferences each year.

Please someone make him stop... I'm so embarrassed just thinking about it.

laverfan. Do you think Novak's on the slippery slope? You have made me suspicious about that odd ITF award...

I think its sweet (pun intended), in a very childlike manner. Djokovic the person goes up in my estimations. Of course it would be better if he laced the chocolates with nandrolone, and forced the press to undergo random tests two days later, shouting - "you see how easy it is? This is why we must free Viktor!"

Nah… He wants to be considered the suave Djokovic rather than the brash Novak. He must be in training by Boris the Becker.

So long as he's not rivalling Sugarpova with an aggressive marketing strategy for his new Djokolates, I'm OK with it.

Re: Djokovic Desperate To Sweeten Up The Press
What's better, Djoko's presser, or the usual pre-Grandslam whining by Nadal that the powers that be have not designed everything to favour his chances dressed up as speaking on behalf of the benefit of audiences or the game? The notion that he is remotely interested in something for the 'good' of tennis if there is any possibility that such a 'good' would inflict even an infinitesimally small disadvantage on him is laughable. He may share that with a lot of pro's, but at least he could spare the pretence.

Re: Djokovic Desperate To Sweeten Up The Press
I think this clearly shows that there is a fun side to Djokovic that simply doesn't exist with Rafa. I've never heard of the Spaniard bringing in truffles (tRAFfles?) for the press.
Perhaps Rafa needs to up his game in this regard. Seems Novak has the mental edge here. He's gaining the momentum and leaving Rafa trailing.

Djokolates, huh? Would Nadal then release Nadella, and Federer sell Federer Rocher? All gets a bit pear shaped thinking what Jo-Willy could market with clever wordplay...

You should know the routine by now, Barry. There is some dust being imported somewhere.
@YvonneT… I had the image of Djoko-lettes in my had for a fleeting second.

Djokovic was asked in his on court interview today if he was carrying a bag in Australian covers to gain favor with fans. He said simply "yes".

Nadal also claimed he left Xisca at home to maintain female support... Maybe Djokovic and Rafa realise that they've stretched their bodies and technology as far as possible, and the next edge can only be gained by somehow harnessing crowd support into energy?

Yes Nadal also pandering to the Australians - all players do it. It makes perfect sense. I mean why bother trying to alienate yourself. I just see this as another excuse to have a dig at one of Rafa's closest rivals.

Firstly thanks to Hawkeye - for bringing this to our attention. It is interesting and very sociable of Djokovic. Of course Hawkeye couldn't just post this very interesting link without adding anything to it - as that wouldn't make for a "thread" ... just miscellaneous odds and sods. So Hawkeye wrapped the link up in sugar coated paper in an attempt to start a discussion ... which too is a very sociable thing to do.
Anyway good to see tennis players acting as "real people"

while we're on the subject of PR - anybody have the link for Roger's press conference where he essentially dismisses claims of the heat carrying a health risk? Only read it on the paper, but it comes off as him not really caring if the players "burn", makes him seem "above all", as it were. Quite an aloof statement to make, I thought. Not everyone can afford to arrive in Australia three weeks ahead, train in Dubai, or have heat resistant African genes.

Asked how he handled the heat, the 32-year-old Federer said: "I'm here. I'm speaking. Actually, it's not crazy."
"It was very dry, just hot, stinging sort of sun," he added later. "Depending on where you come from it has a bigger effect on you, this type of heat. So it's very personal, and it can become just a very mental thing — you just can't accept that it's hot."
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/tennis/article-2539017/No-sweat-Federer-Melbourne-heat-Swiss-great-beats-Duckworth-straights.html
Federer thinks dealing with the heat is more of a mental challenge than physical.
He said: 'If you've trained hard enough your entire life, or just the last few weeks, and you believe you can come through it, there's no reason (you can't). If you can't deal with it, you throw in the towel.'

Jim Courier: But you make the trip down here every year, right? When you going to bring her? Come on Xisca, we need you here, right!
Rafael Nadal: Well, if the girls from Australia are not that sad, so yes!
I can only imagine the articles we'd have from HE if Andy or Novak had said something like this...

what is wrong with this exactly?? I think its pretty cool, he just seems like a fun guy who wants to lighten things up a little. You really cant win in this world. He is just having a bit of a laugh and the media are hardly going to complain about stuffing their faces.
Novak and Roddick are the rare minority that look to bring some sort of humour to press conferences. What is the harm

Nadal is the face of Bacardi, a poker aficionado, and the face of a watch company worn mainly by rappers - if you haven't yet caught on that he doubles up as a mink coat wearing playboy who probably goes around racing Lamborghinis in his Merc, you cannot blame HE for neglecting to mention it.

I saw that. For whatever reason Nadal was embarrassed by being questioned about his girlfriend and didn't know what to say. Courier wouldn't let go and Nadal tried and failed to make a joke out of it. The studio Eurosport commentator said something like "someone should slap Courier". Maybe that's what Nadal should have done?

I agree Rafa is very sensitive when it comes to talking about his personal life and he keeps Xisca out of the limelight.
