Re: 2016 Olympics.
It does say a maximum of four men and four women. I suppose they could say it's likely to be less than the maximum.
If it is four men and four women per country, that could be between 600 and 800 players they have to deal with.
The whole stupid idea of Olympic golf is to bring golf to new audiences, so there wouldn't be much point in trying to engage people in (say) Indonesia if they don't have anyone in the competition.

Re: 2016 Olympics.
What are the chances they even manage to build the course on time? This will end up being played at the rio virtual golf bar.
Hopefully Spence has been chosen on sound criteria, unlike the ryder cup captaincy which is based on no logic at all.
Does anyone else think that at the end of the sherlock where he jumps from the roof, Moriarty's impression of normal people is just like Mcginley?

Re: 2016 Olympics.
There will be a men's and women's tournament with 60 competitors in each. The top 15 players in the world rankings will qualify (upto four per country) and the other 45 (or as many as it takes to make up the 60) will be made up of the highest ranked players from countries that don't already have two players qualified. so basically it is 2 players per country unless a country has 4 players in the top 15.hend085 wrote:i see it mentions there might be 4 per country. previous reports had always been 2 i thought?
The USA would have Woods, Mickelson, Zach Johnson and Matt Kuchar taking part but Steve Stricker, Jason Dufner and Brandt Snedeker who are also in the top 15 would miss out. Great Britain & NI would have Rose, McIlroy (stated he could play for Ireland instead), Poulter and McDowell take part.
The suggested format is a 72 hole individual stroke play tournament.

If necessary, there are other golf courses in Brazil, and the Rio area. There's a good crazy golf course in Buzios as well, it has a jungle theme and one of the holes plays around a jeep. However I'm sure the course, like all the other Olympic venues, will be completed in time (just). I suspect the olympic park will resemble the set from the Truman show, with a lot of unfinished work behind the scenes.
The problem is that a brand new course needs several years for the land to settle. Greens in particular need a while to bed down. I've played on a brand new course before and at times it feels like playing on a beach.

Re: 2016 Olympics.
I'm quite excited about the Olympics, it's rare that our little country has a genuine shot at a gold medal. But with the dream team of G-Mac and hopefully R-Mac on board those dreams may come true. Certainly much better chance of a gold than team GB. Is Rose the only GB player under 40 with a major??

What a WUM.
Pretty sure R-mac wants to play for GB, unless his wife convinces him to represent Denmark.

Rose and Poulter would be my guess ... and Charley Hull and Jody Ewart-Shadoff for the ladies would be great!

Re: 2016 Olympics.
The Olympics are more than two years away. Predicting who will be on any team is just guesswork.
It could be two players for the UK who you've never heard of at this moment - or if the McIlroy/Denmark scenario is followed, then almost anyone you have heard of.

Because they don't want to risk losing Woods in the first round . . . .
