McCrory was born in Annfield Plain, County Durham, England. He made his professional debut in February 1984, scoring a 1st round knock out against Barry Ellis. Over the next 15 months he fought a further 12 times, winning on each occasion before suffering his first defeat against John Westgarth in September 1985. The defeat was to be the first in a series of losses for McCrory as he went on to lose a further four fights out of his next five. In November 1986 this run came to an end when a visit to Louisville, Kentucky saw him get back to winning ways against the inexperienced Joe Adams.[2]
The Adams win provided the springboard for a run of form which would take him first to the Commonwealth cruiserweight title and then to the British. Four straight victories set him up for a shot at Zambian Chisanda Mutti, the reigning Commonwealth champion, in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear on 4 September 1987. The fight went the distance with McCrory picking up a points win. In January 1988 he defended his title for the first time and picked up the British belt with a win over Tee Jay in Wandsworth. A further defence of both titles occurred in April 1988 when he returned to Gateshead to defeat challenger Lou Gent.
Three more wins over journeymen opponents followed the Gent victory before, in June 1989, McCrory challenged Patrick Lumumba for the vacant IBF cruiserweight title, winning the belt via a unanimous points decision. He made one defence of the belt against Siza Makathini in October 1989 before losing it to American Jeff Lampkin in March 1990.
Following the Lampkin defeat, McCrory moved up to heavyweight and in September 1991 lost in a challenge to future world champion Lennox Lewis, failing in his bid to win Lewis's British and European titles. Two victories and a draw against journeymen followed the Lewis defeat before a trip to Moscow in July 1993 resulted in an unsuccessful attempt to win back his IBF belt, losing over 12 rounds to reigning champion Alfred Cole. The fight was to prove his last as a professional as McCrory retired from the sport with a record of won 30, lost 8, drawn 1. Since retirement, McCrory has become a respected television commentator, employed by Sky Television as the long time sidekick of Ian Darke.

Re: V2 Boxing Podcast 29th January Questions for Glenn McCrory
Favourite fight you've seen when working for Sky?
Will Kell Brook ever get Khan in the ring?
Best you faced: quickest / best defence / hardest puncher
You vs Haye at CW, fancy a chance with that chin of his and tiring him out like Thompson did early in his career?
Reason for Sky dumping Khan.
Favourite round of all time?

Do you feel you made the most of your career or are there any regrets?
Who would be your dream opponent at cruiserweight and heavyweight?
What do you believe should be done to improve the judging of fights?
What is the infrastructure for boxing like in County Durham in comparison to when you came through?
Were you more comfortable fighting at home or abroad?
Are there any good prospects ready to break through from your gym?
How did you keep your motivation through your string of loses to go on to a decent run of victories?
Other than being painful was it a good experience getting in the ring with Lewis?
Cheers Paul!

Did someone have a quiet word with you and is that why you stopped mentioning every five minutes that you used to spar with Mike Tyson?
Fighter that you'd love to see get a shot at the big time
Fighter that you'd love to see get put in his place
Most over-rated/under-rated fighters (active and retired)
Best interview you've conducted
Worst interview you've conducted.
Worst decision you've seen as a fighter or commentator?
Do old timers benefit from fans' rose tinted glasses?
Does anyone really care about Floyd v Pacman anymore?
Why no love for Bradley Pryce?
If you died and came back as ice cream, what flavour would you be?
Is Adam Smith as weird/nerdy in real life as he is on the telly or would Chuck Norris think twice about getting out of line with him?
SLAYER/Slade/Leo Sayer? Who's better? (If you don't say SLAYER you get a smack)

How much do you pay Sky to employ you ?
How much does Nicky Piper pay to employ him ?
Whatever happened to Paul Dempsey, Ian Darke and Gary Norman ?
Cheers Rodders

No questions for Glenn (seeing as Dave got there first with the Tyson reference). But I do remember a great story on the old 606 that someone spotted him in his garden at midnight shouting a name, when asked about it he said that he was calling his dog.
Same person met his wife the next day and asked if Glenn found his dog,to which she replied that they didn't own a dog.

Actually, I would like to ask Glenn, how can we ensure boxers will retire at the right time before the onset of cognitive damage?

With Stuart Hall scheduled to defend against a fellow North East fighter in Martin Ward, will every North East boxer eventually win a world title thereby pittling on your chips a bit?

Hi everyone. Thanks for putting the effort into your questions for this interview but Glenn has just been in touch with me to say he is unable to come on. This is postponed for the minute. Sorry guys
Re: V2 Boxing Podcast 29th January Questions for Glenn McCrory
No doubt got a speak engagement where he'll be recalling that time he sparred with Mike Tyson. The headline speaker is Colin Hart who will be asking if anyone knows how many people correctly predicted the outcome of the Rumble in the Jungle and if anyone their names.

Probably visited the site, read through the wee taking questions, and decided against giving an interview.

It's to his detriment then as there were at least four questions that weren't half bad
