The Top 10 Premier League Goal Keepers Ever.
Our newest football writer, Somsubhro Chatterjee has taken a look at who he thinks are the best 10 goalkeepers in Premier League history. Normally I would paste the article over, however he has included a few videos, so head over to the journal and cast your vote

Is he saying that Nigel Martyn is a better keeper than Cech, or is he listing them in no particular order?

not a bad top ten, cant agrue with most. not sure martyn deserves to be so high up and no david james is probably a bad omission despite his occasional blips
i would personally have VDS much higher but then again i am a bit biased. JJ is too high, would have brad friedal over him.

Thats a lot better than my top 10. And that's the reason that I've joined this forum- so that I could get some suggestions and opinions from the more experienced guys. I would only put seaman above vds.

I think Reina was world class for at least the first four seasons he was in England, it's only been over the last couple where his class has come under question. I still think he deserves a mention as on his day he was one of the best keepers in the world, I think he'd be rated higher had he not been playing at the same time as Cech who has taken a lot of the plaudits that he would have earned.

I agree with you on that and that's why I included him in my top ten, his WC form over his earlier years pushes him higher than extended decent form of the veterans of the PL.

Pepe reina won the premier league golden gloves 3 years in a row, surely that warrants a place in the top 10?

your not a bad keeper if you can consistently play in the prem for a long period of time, jj, james and schwarzer have proven themselves over long periods, with james easily holding records for apperances and clean sheets despite him not always playing for the top sides. the likes of cech and reina have had some very shakey years in there time here and havent done it for as long

JJ has shown how good a keeper he has been for a long long period, too old now but was always a reliable keeper and thats one of the best compliments you can give a keeper. not to mention he didnt have the greatest defences in front of him that others did. id rather have jj at his best than reina

Well, that's my opinion. You can expect articles from me that are a lot better in the coming months. Have you had a look at my other atricles? They're "kac" too?
Honestly, I have no idea what "kac" means, but I take it as a suggestion and hope that my future posts won't get such adjectives associated with them.

That's why he is in my list. Schmeichel is the best ever without a doubt, but he had a good defence in front of him. David seaman also had a solid back-four. For that matter, Petr Cech also had(has?) one of the best defence in the EPL, Terry, Cahill, Ivanovic, Azpilicueta, Cole... In fact, they're so good that they have conceded the least no. of goals this season. Have a look at the image for refence...

I have no problem with your list by the way, but its hardly some groundbreaking wonder. Basically, you've gone all Liverpool and been offended cos someone you like isnt as high up as you want.
And Reina wasn't even on mine, guy never had the required consistency and got replaced about two seasons later than he should have been

Please.............. Three time golden glove winner and Riena has to be the best distributor of the ball since the great Dane. He is a big team keeper.

Re: The Top 10 Premier League Goal Keepers Ever.
Little bit over the top if its basically one disagreement! I also would take JJ over the course of the Prem than Reina.
Reina had too much crud mixed in with his good. Liable to mistakes too often for a very good keeper, had a short peak. His peak definitely better than JJ, but Bosnich's peak would get him on the list (damn Charlie) and James' peak would push him higher (damn video games!)

reina had a few good years behind a pretty good defence, the years between he's been very inconsistent with plenty of errors. very poor at coming for crosses and flaps at a lot. liverpools zonal marking used to be criticized for why Liverpool were conceding so many goals from set pieces but very few mentioned reinas reluctance to come off his line if the area was crowded, plenty of headers 5/6 yards out went in. seriously lacked the physicality to be the highest tier keeper.
plenty of people me included wont have listed reina, yet a liverpool fan disagrees with us. surprise surprise. JJ consistentency, especially at bolton where he was often superb gets him in front of reina for me

Surely big Neville Southall should be in a top 10? His best years were pre premiership but he was still an exceptional keeper in the early to mid 90s. Tim Flowers would make a top 10 as well for me. Excellent for Blackburn in their title season.

Alot a generalities in that statement which are not true.
Lacked the physicality , couldnt take you seriously after that.
You dont get 134 clean sheets in 285 (especially after 'two bad years') and be rated lower the Jussi.
In these 134 clean sheets did teams not have shots on target or put crosses in the box
Looking forward to some of these lists to be posted...

Yer thats cos I have two former Man U number 1's ahead of Riena.
Am not the one with the problem here, am not resorting stereotypical insults.
I made a point of JJ being at number 3 in his list. Isn't this what a forum is for, stating opinions and debating?
If you think JJ is better then Riena, fair enough. But the questions araises why didn't other big clubs snap this keeper up when he was in his pomp?

Fergie wanted VDS but had already signed Bosnich. This was of course before VDS went to Fulham. Difference between VDS and JJ is, VDS did get snapped up.

Re: The Top 10 Premier League Goal Keepers Ever.
However, that Bosnich mistake outlines how precarious transfers and judgments can be. Howard would be seen as a bad Man United transfer, yet hindsight has helped us see hes a very good 'keeper. Bosnich was a mistake.
Schwarzer only got his move come the end of his career, James never made it big, Martyn was always the bridesmaid, Given and Friedel outside the major competitors.
Reina has nowhere near enough longevity. Jaaskelainen made the most saves in the league last year. Now, your argument will be West Ham let their opponents have a lot of shots. And I would argue two things:
1) Reina kept more clean sheets due to being in a better side.
2) Jaaskelainen did his most basic job principle exceedingly well for his team.
Reina saved 71% of shots he faced last year. JJ 77%.
Who do I think, in his career, has been more vital to their team? Jussi at Bolton then West Ham for a lot longer or Reina at Liverpool? My answer is quite clear from my list.

Stats and goalkeepers go together like marmite and beetroot. Also, IMO, playing for a top 6 club for a number of years counts for something. Being number one at Bolton and West Ham, isn't quite the same.
I do though respect the fact that you've seen JJ more than me (telly only).
