CL Last 16
First topic message reminder :
Some cracking games this week, Barca/City and Bayern/Arsenal. Can't see past Bayern and Barca wins. Pellegrini has said he'll attack Barca and I say do so at your peril. This may not be the Barca side from 2010-2012 but its still a very very good side with players in form currently, namely Fabregas, Sanchez and with a returning Messi back in the goals. There's a chance that if they go in with two strikers that they could get torn to pieces. I think against Barca you have to play a 5 man midfield. They keep the ball too well and will just pass their way through you.

As good as Bayern are I reckon they're vulnerable to pace. A few of their players (Martinez, Boateng, Dante) look like they're lumbering at times.

Hell, Santi's unlucky there. I'd take Monreal off. He's been gash since coming on and it was his fault.

The red was way to harsh imo.
just a miss timed collect and he looked like he tried to pull away.
the penalty was fine, but that was a yellow only..
any way. . Pen missed..game still on

red for me on second viewing, robben would have got on the end of it and the keeper stopped him getting a goal scoring opportunity
its always been a harsh rule when you get a pen and a red but the ref has to follow the rules so he has to go there

Obvious red.
Ozils head has completely gone, can't believe he is still on the pitch.

Not even close to being an obvious red . Way to harsh. Every keeper would have gone for the ball and then he even pulled out and only clipped him.
and robben wouldn't have got on the end of it

i thought ozil would have been the one to be sacrificed. he's gone from being inconsistent to Poopie recently. if he's not contributing assists or goals he aint doing nothing!

That was a harsh penalty and Robben has already won a couple of touch foul free kicks. Ozil should not take any penalties for us again. It would be a gutty performance to hold Munich from here out. Arsenal needed to get a goal in that first 15 minutes when they were bossing Munich. Since then Munich has put the screws to them but Gunners really defending well. I love Kos, Merts, and Flamini those three together give us our best lineup defensively.

I have to say after a tough week the gunners have played much better in their last two matches. Lets hope they give a good account in the second half. If they give up a goal early the flood gates can open.

yep, deny a goal scoring opportunity its a red card. its exactly what happened. think your love for your second team is clouding your judgement here, only someone extremely biased could say it wasn't a red. (i wanted arsenal to win by the way)

by the letter of the law, it's a red card, that's pretty obvious. If he doesn't take Robben down, Robben scores, simple as that. It's not deliberate but it was a clumsy challenge, and for me he has to go.
Of course this always brings with it the debate that whenever a goalkeeper fouls it's a goalscoring opportunity, and is a penalty and a red card too harsh? Maybe so, but according to the rules the referee has very little choice.

It wasn't harsh at all, he denied him a clear goal scoring opportunity.
To be honest he was late, hard and high- he probably would have been sent off for that anywhere on the pitch.
Stupid decision he was never getting there.

agreed, i do think its often too harsh a rule. but to suggest it wasnt a pen is ludicrous

Sanga had the first robben touch covered.
at that point its refs interpretation compelling.
that is the harshest red you will see. Szcehey did what every goal keeper would do under the circumstance
I understand the ref can give a red but he also doesn't have to . Its discretionary.

I think Sanogo has played great for a youngster at this level of competition. Everyone laughed at Arsene when he brought this kid in on a free transfer in the summer. Looks to have real potential for the future.

sagna was never getting to robbens touch if robben wasn't taken out.if the keeper didnt come out robben had a goal scoring opportunity, the keeper denied that. the ref didnt have a choice

Re: CL Last 16
I agree with mysti, it is a bit harsh to red card the goalie although it was a penalty kick. Under that interpretation the Munich player should have been ejected as well. as he was the last defender between Ozil and the goal. Why was Munich's foul a yellow, if you want to apply that rule as harsh as possibly both players should have gone.

he didnt have a choice but to give the penalty. But he 100% had a choice of whether to give the red or not

The ref has also given Munich a number of real touch fouls as Robben throws himself down at the slightest contact and always gets a free.

The rule is nothing to do with being the last defender, preventing a clear goalscoring opportunity is a red card and Szczesny that so it's a clear red card.
