Adonis Stevenson Jumps Ship
First topic message reminder :
Stevenson has jumped ship from HBO to Showtime - all but torpedoing a potential showdown with Kovalev. Looks like a Hopkins fight is on the horizon (God help us).

Re: Adonis Stevenson Jumps Ship
I do wonder if many have watched his recent fights because he was brilliant against all of Pavlik, Pascal and Cloud, none of them were foul fests at all. It's in the recent fights he's lost against both Calzaghe and Dawson where he tends to resort to blatant fouling and spoiling. The Wright fight was dreadful from the pair of them in fairness, the worst blend of styles you could ever ask for.
Kovalev just like Matthyse is your stereotypical slugger, his crudeness is covered up because he has a certain fan friendly style but beyond that is very limited.

Re: Adonis Stevenson Jumps Ship
Mathysse gave the number one in his division a horrendously difficult night despite being repeatedly low blowed. The winner of that may have paid a hefty price for the victory if his next fight ws anything to go by. Not sure how being a 175 pounds Mathysse is an insult if I'm honest.
He's a front foot aggressor in style, so he's not going to be making people chase shadows, but he makes the most of his strengths. Accurate, fast, powerful and balanced. He also won nearly 200 amateur fights with 21 losses apparently, not the mark of a crude slugger.
Hopkins AND Smoger were fouling Murat!

agreed, yes!
anything i had to say that you disagreed with though??
or did you just come on here 'to laugh at people' again?
the fights happening. best fight for them both and their fans. unfortunately for Kovalev he will have to wait his turn
Yes, I disagree with your massive over-sell of the interest in Hoppo. Hardcore fans are a minority, casual fans are where the money is. And nobody casual (and not even many hardcore) want to watch one of the most butt-ugly dreary boring fighters of the last couple of decades spoil his way to another UD.

How many filthy casuals do you think even know who Kovalev is?

Re: Adonis Stevenson Jumps Ship
He fought Cleverly in a 5, 000 seat arena, and was the second banana during that double header in Quebec... Of course he's HUUUGEE...
By comparison, Popkins drew a million for Murat, and 1.2 mil for Cloud...
Dear me, quite similar to the figures GGG fans pump out to justify him being a financially justifiable fight for Martinez...

I don't care. It's this kinda thing that means Charley Burley will go down in history as a contender and Chavez Jr will go down as a champion.

He's a real middleweight, unlike Cotto.

Pacquiao wasn't a real 140lbs when he spanked Hatton.

Oh yeah that was a real spanking he got from Leonard. No wonder he retired after, I'm surprised he could still eat solid foods.

I'm surprised you even brought that up.
The site of the once indestructible Marvin Hagler being helplessly stalked down and crushed under the hellaciously powerful, hurtful blows dealt out mercilessly by Leonard is one that scarred my mind.
It was such an unrelenting beating I nearly stopped watching boxing altogether. It had a Holmes/Cobb feel. Hagler just taking brutal punishment throughout and nobody doing anything about it.

Re: Adonis Stevenson Jumps Ship
Even when Hagler tried to get on his bike, Leonard refused to let him find sanctuary, repeatedly bullying a nearly helpless Hagler on the ropes like an adult attacking a child.
I don't often pity fighters, but I think Hagler, for the way he was physically battered that night earned that pity of many observers. Why didn't the ref step in? Why didn't his corner pull him out? A fighter's pride only means so much.

Re: Adonis Stevenson Jumps Ship
Point is - asking a former light middleweight champion to fight the middleweight champion is hardly a stretch... I mean this wouldn't have even been a problem before the eight divisions spawned little babies... 147-160lbs, woulda been one division, no?

Sorry I was distracted I didn't respond to an actual argument.
Pacquiao's last fight before Hatton was the Oscar thrashing at 142 wasn't it? And he'd totally trashed the WBC champ in the division below on his brief stop at lightweight.
Cotto's been beaten twice - once soundly - at junior middle in his most meaningful fights there. The guy who beat him soundly has lost twice since, being shut out in one of them. Hardly the kind of run Manny was on.

Also, Manny was seen as better than the light welters of the time. You'd have to be high on a powerful strain to pick Cotto over GGG at 160.

Sorry mate - if you're up at 3 am drinking protein shakes to make weight... I'm not sure I buy you being a natural at the weight.

Re: Adonis Stevenson Jumps Ship
Never said he was a natural. Said he was on a great run (which Cotto is not) and that he'd beat all the other light welters at that time whereas there are middleweights out there who'd beat up on Cotto.

Says a man who is virtually wedded to a forum on a subject he knows very little about. If that's not pitiful I don't know what is!
