Prospects beaten by Journeymen?
Hi All,
Has there ever been a highly (or even decent) rated prospect beaten by a Journeyman boxer? Thinking proper Journeymen as well, not domestic champs etc
Can't think of any off the top of my head, but it is Friday after all, and my Boxing knowledge is not up to the standard of some of you fellow members

Re: Prospects beaten by Journeymen?
It's fairly common -- current British champ JL Dickinson has lost twice due to injuries (in bouts he looked to be fairly comfortable in).

One the most exciting prospects in the early noughties called Francisco Bojado suffered a surprise defeat against a unheralded unknown Mexican fighter. Junior Jones was setback by murderous punching trial horse Daryl Pinckney.

Did Freddie Pendleton smash some prospect and then go on to be one of those troublesome bogeyman ?

Not sure if it counts but Kirkland's first round loss to Ishida was a big upset considering Ishida's record suggested he had no real power.

Re: Prospects beaten by Journeymen?
Good thread.......
Marlon Starling was the biggest "Journeyman" mistake lot's of up and coming welters made in the 80s.........
Ayers and Brown both suffered their first defeats thinking he was past it and Breland thought he was a safe first defence....Duff also assumed after he got creamed after the bell by Tomas he was safe.....
When Moochie was expected to win he looked crap..........When he was expected to lose he could be awesome..

Re: Prospects beaten by Journeymen?
Gatti picked up an early loss to a guy called King Soloman, not really a journeyman but hardly a ranked fighter either as he'd drawn as many as he'd won, he disappeared after that which is a bit strange really.

Apparently Pendleton beat the living daylights out of Nigel Benn in sparring. I thought Pendleton upset Matthew Hilton but it was Robert Hines.

Salido isn't quite a journey man but pulled off a big coup in defeating the biggest prospect to hit boxing in a decade.

Perennial loser Jesse Ferguson managed to acquire a shot at the title by beating Ray Mercer..........What a joke that was..
Although he did manage a win over a up and coming Buster Douglas early in his career.

Yes he is a journeyman, he is a one dimensional plodder, Margarito type....Truss, back me up here.

Re: Prospects beaten by Journeymen?
Hard to remember as they usually fade into background when losing.
Off top of my head Proksa was highly rated before he lost to Kerry Hope.
Although Prescott wasn't a journeyman he wasn't expected to best a prospect as good as Khan

Amir Khan vs Breidess Prescott. An unheard of undefeated fighter from south America who had fought nobody of note and was only brought in to test Khans chin based on his supposed power.
Well. The power outdid the Chin. Khan has since gone on to win world titles though whilst Breidess has become a gatekeeper-ish fighter.

He won a WBO title in a vacant match-up with John Davison from up here if that's your definition of a champion.
He was a huge underdog against all of the aforementioned -- carrying that belt didn't change public perception of him until he'd beaten them all.

Not my definition............He's regarded as a former Champion....Like it or not !!
No good living in the past....
When you become a world champion like Starling did you lose the journeyman status...
Stop being bitter.......Only hurt yourself !!

I've no idea what that gibberish means. In real life, Robinson was viewed as nothing more than an overachieving journeyman until he'd beaten the aforementioned trio. The WBO was lightly regarded and Robinson certainly wasn't viewed as a featherweight champion.

He beat them when he was a world champion.....and If he was on Ringside or any other show he'd be introduced as a World champion....
But I take it back...............It means nothing to me...........You're absolutely scrum-dingerly right !!..... ..
Now as I find you a complete loser............I'll move on..

Was Braddock anything more than a journeyman when he won the title? How about Micky Ward vs Shea Neary?
Also didn't Emanuel Augustus beat a few people with padded 20-0 records, he won as many as he lost.

Wladimir Klitschko v Ross Puritty springs to mind, Wlad stopped late on iirc, he was exhausted.
Maybe there is an argument to add Corie Sanders however that was for a World Title?

The unbeaten and highly rated Errol Christie got sparked in a round by a Belgian plodder called jose seys. Not sure why a middleweight prospect was fighting a light heavy, but still a shock.

Darnell "I'm not a journeyman" Boone has Kayoed Adonis Stevenson when he was a 13-0 prospect. Also beat 10-0 prospect Willie Monroe Jr. and sneaked a draw vs 11-0 prospect Morgan Fitch

Re: Prospects beaten by Journeymen?
Conteh dropped a decision to the unknown and inexperienced Eddie Duncan early in his career (while he was still operating as a small Heavyweight). John was only a very young pup at that stage, but was coming in to the pro ranks off the back of an excellent amateur career, and already there was a feeling that he was something pretty special.
Never seen the fight myself (a Conteh die-hard like milky or the captain might remember it / have seen it, though) but I do remember Harry Carpenter touching upon it in his commentary for the first Conteh-Finnegan fight and saying that it was a bit of a dubious decision in Duncan's favour. He achieved nothing after beating Conteh. The definition of a journeyman getting it right one time and one time only against a can't-miss prospect.

How many times do journeymen get the short end of the stick after a close fight with a prospect?
William Warburton gave George Michael Carman the business on Saturday only to go down 59-57. Warburton beat him up, broke his nose the lot.

Grady Brewer was a journey man before he won the contender. Just as Haz says about journeyman getting unfair treatment, Brewer would win some fights at short notice to then get the decision against him

Howard Winstone, too. Unbeaten in the professional ranks and a Commonwealth Games gold medal winner, wiped out in two short rounds by Leroy Jeffrey, an obscure American who was all but ready to retire.
I'm not sure if you could really call Michael Gomez a journeyman, as he'd carved out some decent results beforehand, but he hadn't had any of those results for a long time before he trounced Alex Arthur. Before that, Arthur was being tipped to carry on the legacies left for the Scots by Buchanan and Watt.
