Myth busters
Evening lads
Just a quick one. Following the death of Rubin 'Hurricane' Carter, and the inevitable talk of how he was robbed if being the middleweight champion of the world. Something which is far from
A given but has become widely accepted over the years.
It has got me thinking about opinion or stories that have widely become accepted as fact.
I.e Ali was taking a beating in the Rumble.
Or SRL won against Hagler...
Is there any of these type of stories which particularly get on your nerves when you hear them being passed off as fact?
Cheers

When people say Vitali would have won the Lewis fight despite his cuts.

Re: Myth busters
Reid was robbed against Calzaghe is one that irritates me. One that is starting to get traction now is the idea Manny was never a threat to Floyd. That one probably needs nipping in the bud.

That unfortunately Rowley is one that we'll never know the answer to, also depends on what you mean by threat as I don't think Pacquiao would have won but could possibly have made it competitive. Shame that they're both a pair of pansies and couldn't answer it for us themselves.

Ha milky you won. Just 3 posts it took for that to be noticed. You'll draw Truss in with the Springsteen lyrics.
I'll never accept Marvin lost but.

HH I never personally thought Manny would win, but he certainly could have won. Does seem to be a trend developing to portray the fight as a gimme for Floyd whenever, which I absolutely can't agree with.

I've forwarded this one before, but what the hell. The idea that Ray Leonard in any way avoided Pryor. A myth perpetuated by those who used to hate the fact that a media darling, pretty boy, everything-handed-to-him-on-a-plate etc guy like Leonard surprised so many of his critics by actually proving himself hard as nails.

Also, I don't think Marciano's comeback against Walcott in the fight in which he won the title was anywhere near as out of the blue as history seems to say it was. Sure, Walcott was fighting well and deserved to be a couple of rounds or so up, but the way it's often described you'd think Marciano hadn't managed to even graze him with a decent shot for the first twelve rounds.

Re: Myth busters
The myth that Ali received extra minutes between rounds 4 and 5 when he fought Cooper the first time. It was an extra 5 seconds which can easily be put down to a mistake on the timekeepers part. As the fight was in England, and timekeepers aren't normally flown in from neutral countries I assume that he was British, but yet it's Angelo Dundee who's accused of being a cheat by making the hole in Ali's glove bigger.
No-one blames the timekeeper for giving Ali an extra 5 seconds. Not that it would have made a difference anyway, it's just something that I find odd.

500K?? Didn't he make in the millions for fighting Arguello the first time?88Chris05 wrote:I've forwarded this one before, but what the hell. The idea that Ray Leonard in any way avoided Pryor. Re: Myth busters
The Vitali/Lewis one sprang to mind immediately. Good shout on Pacquiao v Mayweather.
I've heard a few people say Holyfield deserved the nod in the Lewis rematch but the judges decided to right a wrong. Find that weird given that although he made the rounds closer, he still a similarly small amount of them.
All you need to beat Tyson is two balls and a jab.
Jose Napoles enjoyed crochet. Bull.
Julian Jackson is portrayed as a big puncher. Most women could hit harder than him. He was weak as a kitten. I could easy KO him into next year.
Howard Foster *opens can of worms and wrecklessly empties it all over the walls and cieling*
Ian John Lewis is not bald. He shaves his head.

Re: Myth busters
Tyson Bit Holyfield because he knew he was going to lose. Maybe had more to do with Evander using his head often "literally".

Ali is the greatest of all time, a self publicized myth.
Mayweather is trying to imitate Ali with his "TBE" waffle.

Tyson's prime ended when Cus died.....although he died some 10 or so fights before he even won the title let alone his dominant wins after. People couldn't accept he's capable of losing like every boxer.

Barrera won by 5 rounds without the point deduction. It was the manner in which Barrera dealt with Naz's jeering and taunting that people remember most. Barrera handed Naz his arse.

Another one is "Lewis could've continued against McCall".
I think the ref was spot on with that one.
