Time for a new, medium-sized stadium in England?
First topic message reminder :
A 50,000 stadium bang in the middle of England (somewhere around Rugby) would be nice for UK sport.
Nothing ostentatious. Just a place to attract mid-sized crowds for lesser internationals in about the same place that Wembley should have been rebuilt.
Big enough for major events in rugby and football without compromising Das Kapital and yet easier for even Londoners to get to given the locations of the incumbent national stadia.
I'm sure that it could be wangled given the right political support.

Re: Time for a new, medium-sized stadium in England?
To be honest I'm getting pretty damn sick of volunteering my time and effort to keep this forum running and certain posters- most of whom have a history of breaking the rules and are only still here due to the fact we have a system which errs on the side of lenience- carping from the sidelines about some perceived bias that only exists in their head because they can't just adhere to the rules themselves.
You use this forum, you accept the moderation policy and you accept the rules of the site. If you don't, you know where the door is.
If you have something to say to me or any other moderator I would start with 'Thank You'. The ingratitude on display towards the admins and mods is absolutely breathtaking. We're all volunteers who do this to try and make the forum worthwhile and worth visiting.

Steady, Tiger. If ol' 'shocked were banned, then anyone with a deep belief in his club, or a view of right or wrong in sport or rugby, or having a bit of banter or an opinion about anything left-field would no doubt have to follow and the guardians would only have themselves to look after as only the righteous would remain.
I like ME-109 and Scrumpy and all the rest that others seem to get in a tizz over. For me they can either engage in a social way or I ignore them.
Just as, I suppose, others do me.
No skin off my nose.
'shocked clearly doesn't share my values, but I'm pretty sure that we could share a pint or two in a boozer somewhere and we'd neither of us be worse for the experience.
He's no troller. And neither am I.
p.s. I'll be watching Belfast's Grand Opening tonight to see if it is actually the worst atrocity to the built environment this century or not.
BBC2 NI from about 5.30 isn't it? or is it 7.30? In which case I'll have to wait for the Archers on i-Player.

I agree with all that. We don't just go around banning people willy nilly and we aren't going to start now. We're not interested in driving people off the forum unless they leave us no other choice. But the constant accusations of bias I get when I remove posts that are offensive, political, off-topic or insulting is getting incredibly tiresome.
People get angry and lose the head sometimes, it happens and there's no need for the mods to over-react. People also post stuff that is off-topic and needs pruned. But to then give the mod team abuse for removing posts that break the rules is an absolutely ridiculous situation.

Most Mods do a grand job although there is a number of them that seem to go absent when things turn nasty against us English folk.
I really don't think we are represented on the moderation side of things to be honest, I put Beshocked and Geordie forward to be Mods.

Re: Time for a new, medium-sized stadium in England?
Londontiger you are probably right about the lack of demand.
Scrumpy I flattered but don't think I am mature enough to be a mod. Too opinionated. Though if I was given the job I would try and be as impartial as possible (hard to believe I know).
Geordiefalcon I think would make a great mod.
Portnoy's Complaint I agree. We do have our differences but I do find you an interesting poster and do appreciate your point of view on things.
Notch I apologise I just feel sometimes you are a bit inconsistent with your modding. Plus sometimes don't accept other people's point of view (you're not the only person guilty of that, I am too).
My comments were not offending anyone - if they did then removing them would be more acceptable.

Be a bit more patient, Notch. I don't see a mod as being an over-eager copper who stops anyone and everyone in the street in just case a ruck starts. But a quiet, reflective bobby who has a quiet, private word but isn't afraid to clout someone around the ears. Old school.

Political debate on here is strictly banned - so has to be acted on immediately.

Municipal stadiums should be the way forward. Makes no sense to build a new stadium for one sport when perfectly good stadia for other sports are empty most days of the week.
The French have municipal stadia and it is a great idea IMO. Toulouse's stadium par example. There are a few in the US too.

That's an effusive comment, LT.LondonTiger wrote:Political debate on here is strictly banned - so has to be acted on immediately.
Of course overtly party-political debate should be off-limits, but where does personal opinion end and political debate begin?
Please help as I'm clearly a complete ignoramus.

Re: Time for a new, medium-sized stadium in England?
Don't gild the lily, Scrumps. If not explicit (which agreed it probably should be - maybe it is somewhere), the implied sentiment is and always has been that overtly party-political stuff is not welcome on the RU section.
Sometimes political stuff directly affecting rugby should be discussed (e.g. colour allocations in S.A.). And sometimes politics drift into and out of debates (e.g. the future of the EC) as part of strongly held opinions.
But you are not stupid and you, I'm sure, 'get it'.

Re: Time for a new, medium-sized stadium in England?
I just read through the thread and I thought the comments which had political content were within the context of the discussion. This appeared to be a good clean big-boy discussion (maybe because I wasn't involved?). Politics are indeed the critical point of any major funding project such as a stadium.
I haven't seen the Ricoh Arena in a long time, Saints played a Heineken Cup knock-out there eons ago, and I don't remember if it is good shape. As someone else said, maybe we start there? It probably needs to be updated and modernised. I am sure it would be much easier to obtain funding for that instead of a new palace. The location is good.

Re: Time for a new, medium-sized stadium in England?
One obvious problem, doc, is that the Ricoh is no (or not much) bigger than Leicester City's Crisp Bowl or whatever it's called now.
And what's more, I've got a new found ambition to be a property developer and a parliamentary lobbyist.
So guys swanning around the Sunshine States at the taxpayers' expense (Oh yes, I saw your input to Scrumpy's diversionary post yesterday) had better stay schtum.
btw. It's still freckkin freezing here - not that I'm jealous or anything...

Pressure 'em and build us the palace, my friend. Put it on the M1 around Junction 18 with it own slip roads. To be politically neutral between our shires, we color it green. One end perhaps a bit 'o red and white for you and the other end a bit 'o gold and black for me. Call the the Mercian Stadium.
Let me know where you are going to buy the land because I want a piece before we sell it back at a big profit to HM government for our new stadium. Whilst you are at it, maybe we build a stop for HS2?????

Re: Time for a new, medium-sized stadium in England?
Aw jeez shucks guys but there's way more qualified people on here than me. I'm happy just having my little say here and there.
The mods do a great job and it is difficult as we all have our little reaction points.
I'm no different, I bite over the falcons getting slated etc..well actually no I'm used to that as we're trully gash.
And we can all be deliberately argumentative as well for a bit of fun.
I think we just get a bit riled when a good thread is deliberately ruined the likes of GE who in all honesty, obviously has a lot of knowledge when he's in his very rare serious mode. Just like to see that reigned in slightly.
But in general all is good.
