The Official Eurovision 2014 thread.
First topic message reminder :
Ok guys the Eurovision semi-finals are under way and some cracking songs (good and bad) have been performed.
Who does everyone think will win?
Put a cheeky bet on Ukraine as Europe may sympathise with them.
Favourite song is the Netherlands so far, reminds me of Lady Anabellum.

We should stop putting the millions into it.
lets be honest the uk entrants are rubbish thats why they do bad
Some have been for a while, but 90% of the winners and those within 10 places in the last 10 years. Do you think they have been better?
Let's face it. It is a friends vote. Pull out.
I don't think it is, I think that is a myth. Yes some countries vote a certain way but it doesn't dictate the winner. In the last 10 years Germany, Greece, Finland, Sweden, Azerbaijan, Austria and Norway have won. If it was who had the most friends then the same countries would win but they don't and it usually is the best act on the night that wins.
Azerbaijan, Russia and Serbia too in the last 10 years. A bit telling really.
Just look who voted for who tonight. And then say different.

I will say different, eurovision in the last 10/15 years has been won by countries all over Europe from southern/western/eastern and northern. If it was just about friends voting for friends then the same countries would win every year.
There's 40 countries that vote in eurovision so having 3 friends will not win you the competition, you need a good song to get the other 37 countries to vote for you.

Still missing the point.
Take for example Greece and Turkey forever giving each other 12 points. No matter how crap the song. This is my point. And now the eastern European countries doing much the same thing.
Of course you will get different winners because thankfully there are more western European countries in this event than eastern ones.
But the point still stands. It is not a fair contest and never was.

Sorry my mistake, Greece and Cyprus.
Greece is famous for, especially in recent years, always giving twelve points to Cyprus and always receiving twelve points from Cyprus. This is one of many examples of the bloc voting seen in the contest which also occurs between Balkan, Scandinavian, ex-Soviet and Baltic countries.
Thus not a fair contest, no matter what.
Still remember Wogan from years back saying "well that was a surprise"

You know Greece gave 12 points to Austria this year right and last year Greece gave 12 points to Azerbaijan?
Well I will just repeat that some countries do vote for others more but it is never more than 2 countries and 40 counties give votes.
Also have you wondered why certain countries give more votes to others? The Uk and Ireland always seem to give each other votes as well and the reason being that those countries are not only politically close but also socially. Ireland and the Uk share a common taste in music just like Greece and cyprus. The Greek eurovision singers are marketed all over Cyprus before the competition starts and in many cases the Greek song is a number 1 hit in Cyprus before the Eurovision starts so when Eurovision is on the Cypriot people will of course vote for Greek's song because they know the song as it was number 1 in their country.
The contest is fair, people vote for songs that they like and a song from Russia is going to be very well known in Azerbaijan so of course Russia will get a lot of votes from Azerbaijan just like Ireland got 12 points in 2 consecutive years from the UK when they had Jedward as they were very famous in the uk before eurovision .
If the UK put forward the rolling stones or adele I can guarantee that the UK would win, Europe doesn't hate the UK; just some of the rubbish we send. This is shown by the results half decent songs have achieved - we won in 1997, came second in 1998, came second in 2002, came fifth in 2008 but if we continue to send englebert humperdinck or bonnie tyler or some of the even worse crap we have sent in recent years then we will never win.
But you keep saying the eastern european countries all vote for each other but they really don't. NO eastern european country gave Ukraine, Armenia, Poland, Azerbaijan, Romania or Slovenia 12 points this year.
Only 4 eastern european countries got 12 points from other eastern european countries and 3/4 only got 12 points from 1 other eastern european country.
Looking at eurovision 2013 Lithunia, Estonia, Armenia, Romania, Hungary, or Georgia never got a single 12 point vote from another eastern european country.

I think I was the only person who didn't watch last night judging by my Facebook newsfeed. I just find Eurovision too political and predictable now. It really spoils the entertainment and novelty side of it. I didn't like the competition being split either because you miss all those really naff entries that don't make the final show. Still, nice for Russell Brand to win but I'm not sure why he represented Austria...

Re: The Official Eurovision 2014 thread.
Why not just give each country on Eurovision one equal vote (a concept that may be beyond some Eastern European countries, I grant you)?
None of this twelve points, ten points nonsense. One vote for each country on who they think is the best and, get this, the country with the most votes wins!
It might remove the political element then.

It is a great nioghts worth of telly and even though there are some very bad songs there are also some gems. The winner reminds me of shirley bassey and the netherlands song was amazing, very mumford and son like.
