Groves signs with Sauerland
First topic message reminder :
Annoucned on there Twitter page. I think its a good move for him and prevents the Matchroom monopoly, especially after signing DeGale.
Thoughts?

No reason Groves can't get 20,000 plus gate per defence and sell loads of PPV..
Eddie may not like him signing for a competitor..
If Groves beats Froch what has Eddie really got left? Even if JDG wins a version of the title it will be Groves that holds all the cards.

Also think he is the best man for GG..
Well looks like Eddie should have been a bit more impartial then.

Don King would have kept options on both fighters.
Groves and Hearn had a lot of back and forths before he agreed to the fight. Maybe bridges were burned.

You seem to rate him highly Truss, I'm not too sure he looks so slow and flat footed to me and he looks wide open for someone whose actually going to punch back as his often square on. Be interested to know if Joshua was ever chinned in the amateurs.
Cheers

Don't watch much amateur boxing, but googled the same thing a while back.... Dropped by Dellian whyte, I believe Rodney. Got up and fought back but lost. One of his first fights (he was late to boxing, but still a teenager) and one of the first for whyte (an ex kickboxer). Don't know how hurt he was. Whyte is currently unbeaten as a pro.

Cheers Milky, thought i'd take a note to see how Joshua is matched and if Hearn steers him away from any noted punchers, maybe wrong but I have a sense of vulnerabilty around Joshua that the wheels may come off when tagged.

Camarelle is/was known as a particularly heavy-handed amateur and got through to AJ's chin/head a fair bit in the final and couldn't drop him. AJ didn't seem that fazed in fact.

Joshua is just a novice prospect. If Groves beats Froch then he's the superstar of British boxing, why would he even need Hearn?.

Maybe because he's more likely to be fighting in front of home crowds with a British promoter, the public will soon forget about him when he's fighting in Germany.

This is what Groves has been saying...
"Everything for a reason"
He petitioned the IBF to mandate the rematch to avoid exactly that situation.
Heard him say in an interview it was about making sure Matchroom had no options and he was free afterwards win, lose or draw.

Spot on Hammersmith, how many Brits are going to go the expense of travelling to Germany to watch Groves a mini bus load maybe.Hammersmith harrier wrote:Maybe because he's more likely to be fighting in front of home crowds with a British promoter, the public will soon forget about him when he's fighting in Germany.

Exactly this. Groves a) didn't want Froch swanning off to American to try to claim an easy payday & forget about him, and b) didn't want to be tied up to all manner of rematch clauses & options with Hearn, which he would've been had Froch taken him as a voluntary rematch. By getting the IBF to mandate it he put Froch in a position where he'd have to vacate to avoid Groves, which he knew Froch - who thrives on his macho image - wouldn't do. It cost Groves a lot if his own money to petition the IBF and he's now getting a smaller chunk of the purse, but it's a smart move as he's been able to maintain control of his own destiny. Whether he's followed that up with another smart move by opting for Saurland remains to be seen, but there's clearly beef between him & Hearn as there's no doubt MatchRoom would've been the obvious, easiest option for him with the biggest platform.

Very few have a die hard following like Hatton who was travelling to face the biggest names in the sport. I could be wrong but this moves seems all wrong for a British boxer who if he wins would be a big name over here.

I think you'll see Sauerland starting to put on shows over here with the help of some British promoters like Warren, similar to Golden Boy are doing with Ogogo.

Re: Groves signs with Sauerland
Why would Groves even sign now? He could still sign after Froch fight and if he beats Froch and has no promoter he is in a brilliant negotiating position. He is so certain he is going to win, why not wait? Now he has signed an apparent long term deal, to a German based promotional team, with a shot Abraham and Kessler on the horizon.

He'll still get a shot at those guys though, they're under Sauerland and you would think that was part of the negotiations that win or lose he gets a shot at them.

Perhaps Groves may have had assurances from Sauerland that his fight's will take place in the UK,can't see Groves wanting to fight in Germany all the time, it would be boxing suicide for him.

Re: Groves signs with Sauerland
Groves better not think he is going to fight out there. Would be utter madness to do that. He is a huge star in England, more so if he dusts Froch in hte rematch. Wonder how much money they threw at him to get him to sign.

Just because he's signed with Sauerland doesn't mean he's going to be fighting in Germany. Kessler has been with them for years and he doesn't fight out of Germany. Groves' fan base is in this country and that is where he will be fighting. Truth is after seeing the undercard for Groves Froch 2 I wouldn't mind seeing a few Sauerland events in this country. Signing with Europe's premier boxing promoter is hardly a step back, it's not as if Groves will be fighting out of the Blue Water shopping centre anytime soon.

Ge was dropped by his previous promoter who discovered him and got him the Froch fight.. and then went alone for one fight and bargained the deal on a rematch on his own where due to him trying to be smart and force the fight he ended up with less money than his first offer would have given him... and now he has quickly signed with another top European Promoter....
Not sure how that's going alone let alone doing a good job of it...
Unsurprising comment from the forum's #1 Froch & JdG bumboy.
Well clearly being a Groves brown noser you appear to be desperate to identify others out there doing it... lol
Are you sure you don't mean that anyone who does not share in the delight of kissing Groves backside is a follower of Satan or something? lol ... e, Degale or Froch.

I can't remember Groves being "dropped" by his promoter as you put it, and of course Groves has done a decent job sorting this fight on his own. Hearn tried to stick numerous adds on to the contract and rights to future fights, Groves didn't want that and in the end got his way, he obviously doesn't mind taking less money.

Good on Groves, he obviously knows what he wants and Sauerland have offered him the best chance. Hopefully (fingers crossed,) it could lead to a bit more boxing on freeview as there's no reason that maybe ITV2 etc couldn't bid
