A worrying thought!

Re: Trump to "tweak" Turnberry
Great overview of that part of the course from the link you provided LP.
Apparently, he intends extending out onto the rocks but from that overview not sure why that would be desirable.
Anyone care to have a stab at what the rectangular walled thingy might be?

It's the lighthousekeeper's cottage garden. Not part of the course.

Nairn is a members' club and I don't think it's associated with the Golf View Hotel. I doubt he'd be prepared to pay the members off, and buy the hotel as well. There may not be enough money in the western world to do that because the members know he needs the course as well as the hotel and the hotel owners know he needs the hotel as well as the course.

I think Super was trying to wind Gael up with the comment, George. She seems to have a bee in her bonnet about Trump and she's a member at Nairn.

I thought the general consensus was that Trump courses were top notch? The reworking of Doral seems to have been well received, and everyone raves about the course in Aberdeen. Sounds like great news for Turnberry.

Re: Trump to "tweak" Turnberry
They are always fiddling with these courses, building new tees, or moving bunkers around. However Turnberry was quite extensively reworked before the 2009 Open, it was much more than the normal tweaking. It would be interesting to know what they are planning this time, but I doubt the R&A would expect (or want) much done to the course.
The issue with the Open at Turnberry is access. The road north towards Ayr was gridlocked from mid afternoon onwards in 2009.

Re: Trump to "tweak" Turnberry
There was "extensive" work done at TOC last year in preparation for another borefest in 2015, but unless you play it regularly, you wouldn't notice anything.
So if Trump is merely "tweaking" then I don't think any of these "disgusted armchair traditionalists" would notice the slightest difference at all, just another pathetic excuse to try and have a go at Trump.

Re: Trump to "tweak" Turnberry
Agree with you George, access is the priority.
Still, I am intrigued as to what kind of tweaks are being envisaged. Golf courses are always being tweaked. How many makeovers has TOC had in its lifetime including it being played in reverse at one time in its history which is why you can't see many of the bunkers. So, I certainly don't have a problem with Trump tweaking Turnberry. No, the problem I have with Trump is how he deals with people. In short, he's a bully. It's his way or no way although I think even he must have been surprised at the sheer resilience of the Menie homeowners he attempted to dislodge.
I think Trump's major project will be rolling up the Kintyre course and starting all over again. He seems to enjoy links golf so I see no reason why this this project won't succeed as two par excellence golf courses (one being shorter of course) will only enhance and attract more visitors to Turnberry.
So, although much is written about what Trump might do to the Ailsa course, I believe his most important project will be the re-doing of the Kintyre course.

If anyone has played the kintyre course at Turnberry, what did you think of it?
What scale of changes do you think it needs to make Turnberry a true 2 course resort, or is it already at that stage and the kintyre is just underrated?

The old Arran course was extensively modified a few years ago to become the Kintyre course. It's a pretty tough test - about 7000 yards I think. There are a few blind holes - left over from the Arran days - but it's already far too hard a course for the majority who will play it. Breaking 80 on there in anything other than benign conditions is a real achievement.

Fair enough George. The trouble is that it would appear Trump is determined to leave his mark one way or another ...
A proportion of those will be on the Kintyre Course, but that Donald Steel-designed layout could be set for some serious Trump treatment. “One of the things I may do at Turnberry is build a second course due to the fact it’s an amazing piece of land,” he declared. “By that, I mean looking at replacing the Kintyre course. The land is so good and, if I did that, it would be a fabulous new course.”

To be fair Gael, you go on about Trump so much...maybe you've got a wee secret crush brewing. All girls like a bit of "bad boy" so the more you bleat on about him the more it reveals your secret longings :-O
I've played the Kintyre a couple of times and as "2nd" courses go I think it's definitely one of the better ones. Everybody remembers the very scenic 8th, I also think it has a great opener with the stream very much in play. There are several flat gorse lined fairways so yes in a 4 club crosswind those holes would be "challenging" 9 & 10 are quite exposed up on the top and have the views and 17 & 18 are good strong closing holes. The latter's green is used as the chipping practice area when the Open is there.

If you don't know what it means why didn't you just google it?
Well I did google it, and the search results say did I mean "don lighthouse", "neon lighthouse", "lion lighthouse", "iron lighthouse", then there's some stuff about the lighthouse by Eryk Yon Syl and the lighthouse at La Roche sur Yon.
None of these appear to me to have anything to do with Trump or Turnberry, so I can only assume you either:
1. Made a reference which I don't understand (which is why I asked you - not sure why its a difficult question).
2. Made a simple typo (perhaps you are too embarrassed to admit this?)
3. Are a rambling fool.

4. Is Scottish so uses "yon" (short for yonder) to mean "that".
If you google "yon", the first hit you get is:
yon - literary dialect:
determiner & adverb:
yonder; that.
"there's some big ranches yon side of the Sierra"
pronoun:
yonder person or thing.
"what do you make of yon?"

Thanks Bob. So actually it was 1... a reference I didn't understand.
Maybe Gael should think before using obscure phrases from minority dialects. Just doesn't work in a written format.

Notwithstanding wind-ups, one can only be left with the conclusion that you must be thick as mince that you couldn't work that out for yourself.

If "yon" is "that", could the bold line be re-stated as "Notwithstanding wind-ups, one can only be left with the conclusion yon you must be thick as mince yon you couldn't work yon out for yourself."?

Re: Trump to "tweak" Turnberry
Roller - my understanding is "yon" is only a replacement for "that" when it's a determiner & adverb or a pronoun.
I'm sure the English Language pedants will correct me, but I think in the phrase "with the conclusion that", the word "that" is being used as a complementizer/subordinating conjunction, so "yon" couldn't replace it.

Hahaha!
Do you ever get sick of hearing a certain phrase with the words pot, kettle and black? Seems to be a recurring theme every time you post, and you can only resort to petty insults when you realise you've made yourself look rather foolish again. I really don't feel the need to insult you, I just wish you would try to engage your brain before repeatedly typing mindless rubbish.

Yonder, or yon, really means 'over there'. So the order of the words needs to change because you wouldn't say 'the over there lighthouse'. You would say 'the lighthouse over there' or 'yon lighthouse'. It's not Scots dialect - lots of people in England would say that too.

Nobody writes in colloquial dialects though, so Gael simply inserts stuff to emphasise her Scottishness. Rather odd.

Yon or yonder are old English words, not Scots. I think these days it's generally used in the north east and north west of England though.
