Steven Gerrard has retired from international football.
What a great day for English football. Steven Gerrard retires and finally England can begin to move forward.
No more of Gerrard dropping deep and looking to spray long ball all over the place. The Hollywood Ball era is over.

Why, is Wayne Rooney retiring as well?sportform wrote:What a great day for English football. Steven Gerrard retires and finally England can begin to move forward.

Only issue is Rooney will now be captain.

To be fair Duty, you can say that about just about every English player in the last decade or so and whilst I'd sincerely hope there's some improvement in England's fortunes at the next tournaments, I doubt Gerrard's departure will be instrumental in any of them.
He's been consistently played out of position until a time when he's physically unable to effectively perform the role at the highest level.

One of the better England players at many tournaments, he'll be wrongly remembered for his poorer performance at this World Cup.

This is one of the problems with the England team. The over-importance of the captain. It should just be an after thought after picking the team but the FA insist on guaranteeing someone a starting place.GSC wrote:Only issue is Rooney will now be captain.

Can't we just recall Lord John Terry and give him the armband?

As for Gerrard, well can't say i'm bothered, aside from Neville, Ferdinand, Cole* 2, Campbell, Owen and Beckham nobody can claim to have played near a high enough level in the past 15 years.

Re: Steven Gerrard has retired from international football.
When he won his 100th cap for England, Gerrard was asked what mark out of ten he'd give his international career. He replied 'Six or seven'. I think it's a pretty accurate assessment of his time for England. I think only Ashley Cole out of the so called Golden generation consistently played to his potential for England.
As for his replacement as captain, I think we should go down the route other country's do, and give it to the player with the most caps. It's a ceremonial role which garners more coverage than necessary.

I would rate it a 5. Failed to deliver in tournaments and cost us goals against France in 04, was very poor in 10, and 14 and average in 06.

Funny, I'd have him as our best player in most tournaments he played in. Let down by a lot of others before Steven Gerrard, thats for sure.

Re: Steven Gerrard has retired from international football.
I'd say he was one of England best players in Euro 12, but in the other tournaments he flattered to deceive.
In Euro 04, Rooney, Lampard, and Cole were England's stand outs. World Cup 06 I think Hargreaves, and the Coles were our best players. I don't think anyone came out of our last two world cups with any credit.

114 caps, How many of them have actually resulted in a decent performance? 10-15 tops? (mind you no England player ever turns up for more than 20% of games, so 10-15 perhaps is normal)
Well overdue, complacency and nailed on picks are one of England's main failings. You need rid of players like this.

Gerrard was an excellent servant to English football but like so many before him, carried on a couple of years longer on the international scene than he was capable of.

What worries me is that Hodgson wanted him to continue playing.

No more John Terry talk.

Re: Steven Gerrard has retired from international football.
While I don't think Gerrard's England career will be fondly remembered, he's definitely been on one of England's better player overs the past 15 years and usually one of England's best performers at the major tournaments (not saying much I know.)
As a Liverpool fan I am glad he has retired so he can focus on his Liverpool career and play for longer.

Pretty much agree with that.
I'll let him off 2010 as he was played out of position on at least one occasion, but he was distinctly average in 2004 and 2006, and very poor at the last World Cup.
Euro 2012 was, for me, the only time he came out with a modicum of credit.

Can someone enlighten me as to why John Terry isn't permitted?

As great as he showed he still is last season people on here started the "racist/racist behavour" debate. Which doesn't belong here.

Also agree. 2012, fine, good. The 5-1, lovely. The rest, average or below average, and not really good enough.
I don't think he'll be missed at all but I've lost the will to single out players who've looked alright domestically but wilted at international level.

Even Beckham I think overall was poor. He played with passion for England no doubt but generally disappointed in the actual tournaments.

Re: Steven Gerrard has retired from international football.
We need a captain who has the motivation to go out there and command the team as the manager's second in command, not someone who would rather sit on the John. Terry Butcher but with a modern twist eh?
