First topic message reminder :
Alastair Cook (capt), Moeen Ali, James Anderson, Gary Ballance, Ian Bell, Jos Buttler, Steven Finn, Harry Gurney, Alex Hales, Chris Jordan, Eoin Morgan, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, James Tredwell, Chris Woakes
No Bopara, Carberry or Bresnan, Hales in, but nothing too radical.
Thoughts?

Cook's had a moan about Swann's comments
Someone really needs to give him some PR lessons (or the ECB for that case)

He's mainly full of hot air, great player but very average commentator.
A couple of years he went on what felt like a fifteen minute tirade on modern players being "soft" etc. When England were looking at resting players from Tests. He was lecturing that players shouldn't miss Tests, all the time forgetting that there are many of us who still remember Botham himself missing whole tours.......to do Pantomimes!

Do people remember that summer when alastair cook proved all his critics wrong by losing three series out of four and failing to score a hundred?

Bresnan in t20's still? Seriously? He's worse than Dernbach!
Good to see Roy and Taylor in though

Already looking beyond the ODIs I see Olly.
Will be interesting to see how Taylor, Roy and Gurney go in the T20. Would you put any of them in the final 2 ODIs or stick with the same team? Finn didn't do much better than Jordan but I sense he is on the outer now, yeah?

I don't understand how Taylor isn't in the ODI squad anyways LB, he's been the best list A batter for a few seasons now! Roy maybe not yet. The team needs changing, Cook is not an ODI batsmanThe Loaded Dog wrote:Already looking beyond the ODIs I see Olly.

Re: England ODI squad
To be fair to Cook he wasn't batting in the middle-overs this time around when manifestly the main problems happened (didn't watch the game) so I think some of the criticism he's copped over this particular defeat is pre-targeted and unfair.
On the other hand, no way should he be in the side IMO.
Hales is a talent but needs to figure out how to score more fluently in the middle.
England collectively need to sort out how to play spin.
Thing is I don't think England are inherently bad at this one-day stuff. Just not picking the right guys in the right places or using the right tactics.
Re T20 squad, disappointed no Vince, but I can live with Roy Hales Taylor Root Morgan Buttler Bopara Treds Woakes Finn Gurney/Jordan
or similar...
if on the other hand Roy doesn't play I will be a bit cross...

How the hell isn't Luke Wright in that team? Did the ECB not to see the 2nd half of the tournament? Including his 153 against Essex. Complete idiots.

It's probably something to do with the fact that he's played 50 t20 internationals and only averages 18. And according to cricinfo, if Notts' Royal London Cup semi final on the 6th needs to use the reserve day, Taylor will stay with Notts and not join up with the Eng squad.

Re: England ODI squad
basically cos Luke Wright is a bit rubbish at international level. Not enough release shots given the number of dot balls he plays out, can't play the short ball and can't play decent spin. Can slog the medium pacers OK which is why he is consistently good at county level.

Jason Roy had to retire hurt and is going for an xray on his hand after being hit while batting today.

Reports that they're gonna drop Morgan
Imagine, just imagine looking at that batting line up and going, "yeah Morgs you who's scored the most ODI runs in the last twelve months, you're the issue".
Or the conspiracy in me wants to say they're removing the guy who's the biggest threat to cook's captaincy in this form............

Re: England ODI squad
Root to be dropped as well from reports.
1.Cook
2.Hales
3.Bell
4.Ballance
5.Ali
6.Buttler (wk)
7.Stokes or Jordan
8.Woakes
9.Tredwell
10.Finn
11.Anderson
Not certain about the batting. Agree Root deserved to be dropped but Morgan for all his lack of big scores still offers something very few batsmen in England do. Plus he is usually an excellent player of spin. It feels a bit like selection on the basis of 'can things get worse'.
For what it's worth I want us to be looking towards something like this for the WC:
1.Hales
2.Bell - Let him open and attack with ball coming onto the bat.
3.Taylor
4.Ballance
5.Morgan
6.Buttler (wk)
7.Bopara - or Ali in Sri Lanka
8.Woakes - Broad to come in when fit
9.Tredwell
10.Anderson
11.Finn
Plus - Root, one of Vince or Roy, Foster, Stokes and Jordan.
1.Cook
2.Hales
3.Bell
4.Ballance
5.Ali
6.Buttler (wk)

Re: England ODI squad
Ballance can't nurdle it well enough to bat 4. He's either top 3, or down the order to give it a bash. Your number 4 has to be a bit more versatile, at the moment Root, Morgan or Taylor are the only realistic options there IMO.
I haven't watched England playing ODI cricket that much recently (I'm bored of watching the same sides play each other over and over in meaningless encounters; mind you test cricket is shortly going the same way as well) but it seems like Root has really been struggling whilst Morgan has had trouble converting starts. Surprised about Root who has all the attributes to be a good ODI player, perhaps he needs to be more positive?

Bell injured so Ballance comes in at 3.
Ali for Tredwell and Gurney for Stokes the other changes.

Re: England ODI squad
Our only hope is they send an inexperienced side to SL, on the pretence of resting/not good prep for matches in Aus/NZ and they smash SL. The selectors haven't seen sense for the past 10+ years, so I've good no faith they'll see it now.

The sky team were saying afterwards its now too late to change before the World cup
Errr what???
Pull your fingers out England, you moved the 50 comp to the end of the season to coincide with the ODI's and haven't picked the guys blowing it up like Taylor!! Mental
Cook should not be in the side as a batsman, 100% shouldn't be skipper of it. Stop being so bloody stubborn

The word from Surrey via a local cricket journalist I know and regard highly is that Roy has "recovered" and is "expected" to play.
Whilst I'm extremely keen to see him in England colours, I do hope he is fully fit and does himself justice. As well as his destructive strokeplay, he's a wonderful fielder, both close in and on the boundary.
