Surrey vs Derbyshire LV=County Championship
Surrey have named an unchanged thirteen man squad for the dead rubber LV=County Championship game against Derbyshire at the Kia Oval starting on Monday.
The Surrey squad to play Derbyshire in the LV=County Championship at the Kia Oval on Monday 15th September, Tuesday 16th September, Wednesday 17th September and Thursday 18th September :
Gary Wilson (capt)
Zafar Ansari
Gareth Batty
Rory Burns
Steven Davies
Jade Dernbach
Matthew Dunn
Arun Harinath
Aneesh Kapil
Tim Linley
Stuart Meaker
Jason Roy
Vikram Solanki
do we really have no youngsters who could have played in this game?

Re: Surrey vs Derbyshire LV=County Championship
Thanks for the thread, JimBob.
With Curran and Sibley injured and Jewell, Winslade and Edwards shown the door, there aren't many spare youngsters around at all. Unless we went for a triallist or an Academy player, the only one I can actually think of is the Burger Van.
Although it is a dead rubber as you say, I'm sure Stewie and Ford will be keen to finish the season with a win and provide genuine hope of promotion next year. That's probably the main reason for this unchanged squad.
I would like to see Harinath play. He deserves the opportunity (his last CC match was when we beat Glamorgan away with his runs and wickets proving significant). Hard though to squeeze him in. I would be tempted to leave out Davies although doubt that will happen. Possibly Kapil might miss out having failed to cash in on a rare opportunity at Worcs.

JimBob - possibly although I get the impression that the Viscount is increasingly seen as back up rather than a starter.
I hope we start this match better than we finished the last, particularly as the Club's and Supporters' Club's Awards Night is being held on Tuesday. I'll post a bit more on the Surrey News / Articles thread.

At the ground. Final fix of live cricket today and tomorrow before the winter.
Good call I reckon by Durston to put us in. Batting looks tricky with the ball moving around. White has bowled the best and deserved his two wickets getting edges behind from both the openers. Also impressed by opening bowler Cotton on debut, a bit unlucky not have a wicket so far.
County caps just awarded to Ansari, Burns and Roy. No complaints there but do feel Linley was harshly overlooked when at his best (73 CC wickets in 2011 to win promotion).

Davies goes in first over after lunch. Caught at backward point off Footitt. 72/3.
Wilson joins Solanki at the crease. Need a stand from these two and not the too common "out soon after lunch" from Solanki.

Just gets more depressing. Looks like none of our batsmen want to get to 1000 for the season.

Cotton doesn't get another go at Roy as he departs to Footitt after two consecutive rasping boundaries. 99/5. Four catches to debutant Hosein with the gloves.

109-6 - Harinath gone for 4 (not doing his prospects any good). Dropping like flies.

Batty goes first ball - that's 5 for Footit and 5 catches for Hosein. Can we have a completely new team for next season please?

Re: Surrey vs Derbyshire LV=County Championship
Very good bowling yesterday by Footitt, ably supported by White and Cotton. We did though seem to have something of a collective panic about us during the afternoon. A loose shot from Davies to start the session and more poor batting after that; in particular, Batty being suckered into following his first ball down the legside and gross recklessness from Dernbach. At least Linley understood the importance of staying with Wilson as the skipper gave a perfect demonstration of batting with the tail.
Great effort as well from the Viscount to bowl 18 of the 40 overs in the evening session. Fully deserved his 3 wickets. Seems almost certain though that Derbys will get a lead. Anything above 50 and I fear that's it. Batting should be difficult on this wicket - a green top but on a brown scuffy surface.
Finally, congrats to Derby's other debutant, keeper Harvey Hosein, for his 7 catches. Batty's was the best with the others being more regulation but he maintained composure and reliability throughout the innings. Cracking name too!

Pretty good stuff from the Surrey bowlers this morning. Slightly annoying ninth wicket partnership but generally we did better than expected.
Should be looking to try and set Derbys at least 220. Hopefully, a fair few more than that ....

A lead of 6 at lunch but 2 wickets down. Burns and, as usual around this time, Solanki. Both to Cotton who bowled well without much reward yesterday.
My hoped for lead of at least 220 seems some way off ....

Re: Surrey vs Derbyshire LV=County Championship
127/5, leading by 98. Derbys' first innings lead of 29 looking increasingly important.
A couple of wickets since lunch for Hughes who has been the pick of the Derbys bowlers. Footitt disappointed in his last spell, overdoing the short stuff and veering too much towards leg bringing our old friend "extras" into play. Roy and Harinath batting, the latter has the bug doing the rounds and doesn't look well (even from the top of the members' stand!).

187/5, a lead of 158. Roy batting very responsibly and nearing his 50 as he reaches 1,000 CC runs for the season. Very good effort putting us in with a reasonable chance. Harinath also batting sensibly although too often he finds the fielders. Keep going, guys!

Re: Surrey vs Derbyshire LV=County Championship
Good effort by the three bowlers this morning to limit Derbys' lead to 29. After that, great credit to Roy and Harinath for setting Derbys a tricky target of 251. Very responsible innings from Roy but still containing some of his trademark hitting. Harinath was clearly unwell (he has the bug doing the rounds at the Oval, forcing him to miss the Awards bash this evening where he was due to collect a deserved gong) but really applied himself and proved a fine foil for the Roy Wonder.
Hopefully tomorrow (like yesterday and today) will start off misty and overcast - that should help our seamers and make batting more difficult. As King Dave says, the right Meaker needs to turn up in the morning. There again, that probably applies to all the bowlers.
Fascinatingly poised ....

I fear you're right, Goochie. However badly we've bowled this morning, the Derbys openers must deserve a lot of credit for their patience and application in getting through the opening session in (I guess) difficult overcast conditions.
Godleman now gone to Dernbach but it looks a bit late for us.

It was actually Slater who fell to Dernbach and Madsen has now joined him in the hutch, out to Ansari. However, Godleman still there and Pujara has set off in Indian one day mode. Looks bleak ....

An absolute thrashing - well played to Derby, they showed these clowns how to chase down a 4th inns target. Going to need an exit door almost the size of Leicester's for the chaff we need getting rid of!

Ironically we've got the most batting points and second-highest bowling points. We've lost most of these games on the second innings performances (or lack of).

Re: Surrey vs Derbyshire LV=County Championship
Hugely disappointing end to the season. I thought we were very marginally favourites last night. However, we needed several down by lunchtime. Once that didn't happen, the writing was pretty clearly on the wall.
Some players have definitely improved this season (Burns, Ansari (at least his batting), Roy, Dunn and Curran) but I'm not so sure that applies to the team as a whole. I had hoped the opening home match crumble and defeat to Glamorgan was a one-off blip. However, it now seems a part of the norm following recent losses when in a good position to Kent at Guildford, Worcs away and Derbys today.
Anyway, I'll continue to live in hope.
Finally, many thanks to JimBob for posting a separate thread for every Surrey game. Enormously appreciated.
In the words of Churchy - winter well!

If Aneesh Kapil can bowl next season he could be a decent signing, and I assume Foakes has joined to play for us! As I say every season, (even though Norah has done ok this season) our priority has to be a top class spinner, Ojha anyone??!
Thanks from me to jimbob as well, and to all our posters, they certainly keep me entertained and informed! Thanks!
