Cleverly Bellew - Box Office!
First topic message reminder :
Just seen on Facebook that Cleverly Bellew is apparently going to be on Box Office. Have to say this is pushing things somewhat. Decent enough match up but surely Box Office should be reserved for the elite fights. This is a even match up between two decent enough pros but surely is not Box Office worthy. Got to say Sky and Eddie are pushing their luck with this. Will need to be one hell of an undercard to justify the box office fee for this.
Strongy, feel free to rupture your spleen at will.

Cleverly doesn't have the crossover appeal in Wales Calzaghe did. Joe was a household name and national hero, can't see Welsh boxing fans being any more enthused than the rest about this PPV.

Couldn't tell you mate. I'd imagine they'll fill out the arena (it's probably better value to go than stay at home!). Bellew seems to have a good following in Liverpool to be fair.

It's now obvious why Hearn/Matchroom moved the card from the 29th Nov to the 22nd. If it was going to be non-PPV then they would quite happily have gone on the same date as the Boxnation Fury/chisora card. Blatant greed for a bunch of average fights, I won't be buying this..

Re: Cleverly Bellew - Box Office!
Is anyone surprised ? Sky's boxing coverage is absolutely appalling from top to bottom. Ringside is rubbish, presenters are rubbish, the cards are usually dross and the commentary makes you wish you had Colonel Bob chanting.
Folk still moan about Boxnation but its streets ahead of Sky now even the annoying Bunce is levels ahead of Sky's front men. How many times do they want to use the dull Anthony Joshua as a guest ?? (the quicker he gets sparked the better)
Bring back the golden days with Gary Norman
Cheers Rodders

Awful awful awful.
Inexcusable disgrace, for a PPV.
Think I'm moving to the dark (Strongy) side when it comes to Hearn now.
What a load of cowpat.

I think we'll see some upsets mate, stacked was the wrong word, but the Callum Smith fight certainly intrigues me. That guy has been with both Bika and Abraham and taken them the distance, could certainly upset the apple cart. James Degale will be wanting to carry on pushing for that world title shot so is likely to have a decent opponent as well.

Re: Cleverly Bellew - Box Office!
Card in summary:
Euro-level multiple-failed world title challenger vs former fake world champ that never won his belt;
Fake 'world champ' vs 5th binman in a row, still avoiding domestic & world level challenges;
Another 'world champ' that nobody really cares abouts vs average challenger;
AJ gettting less than 4 rounds vs another washed out Brit;
The only good 'Smith' vs relative nobody probably note even top 25 at SMW in an 'eliminator' for a shot that won't occur;
JdG not fighting for a title.
Another Smith........

Don't agree re DeGale Hampo, he already has the title shot locked in by winning an eliminator. Can't see them risking anyone who will upset the applecart.

How else do you judge a fighter that probably most haven't seen? Most call them a nobody, however some take an objective view. He has taken two current world champions the distance fairly recently, and wasn't blown out by either of them. He is a step up for Smith which is certain and it will be interesting to see how he deals with it.

Re: Cleverly Bellew - Box Office!
It gets boring the negativity that surrounds every domestic card Wheel it really does mate. I remember people slating to the card involving Ovill McKenzie vs Tony Conquest saying it was dreadful and it was a card full of one sided fights, there were three upsets that night which suddenly everyone saw coming after the fight.
I remember Damien and I talking about it on the weekly podcast, we enjoyed gloating about it the week after

Nobody is criticising the card hampo, we are criticising being expected to pay for it, there is a distinction.

Re: Cleverly Bellew - Box Office!
People have criticised the card within this thread, that's what I'm find annoying, and it happens everytime a fight is announced, happened with the Fury vs Chisora one except now there's a possible world title fight on that card it's suddenly a good one.
I don't think it should be PPV, however I can see why Sky have done it, and I've got no issues with paying for it as long is it remains once in a blue moon. They'll reel all the casual fans in and it will sell. Just be glad it's not the states as this would set you back $70.

Strongy was the only one to flip his lid when a card like this was being put on SS1.

Re: Cleverly Bellew - Box Office!
It's hard not to view it with a degree of cynicism. Can't help but think you're watching the early days of Callum Smith, Anthony Joshua et al, seeing them bowl everyone over and as soon as they fight for a title, you'll be paying for a 'PPV fighter'.
I'm worried box office will become the rule rather than the exception.

I've posted an example above mate were a domestic card on boxnation got slated. As I said, it gets boring. Maybe I'm just in a bad mood as it's my first day off ale for a month.

Re: Cleverly Bellew - Box Office!
I understand what Hampo is saying insofar as it’s not a terrible or laughable card by any means. I’m looking forward to Bellew-Cleverly and the Callum Smith fight does have the scope to be pretty interesting – given how green he is, it’s a fair step up he’s making.
That said, it’s never a PPV card in a million (sane) years. That’s not people being unreasonably negative or looking for a reason to complain when they say it, either – it’s just not a good enough card to justify an extra £15 for. Look forward to it by all means, but I don’t think anyone can try to even half-justify the fact that it’s Box Office or defend it on that front. As Sugar Boy said, something like this being on normal Sky should really be an automatic right for subscribers considering what you have to pay for it already.

Re: Cleverly Bellew - Box Office!
Well to be fair Hampo cards on PPV are going to be held up to greater analysis than cards on regular Sky as we as fans are expected to invest more to see them, common sense that. I also bemoaned people whining about this fight when we thought it was on regular sky as I considered this to be a good match up for regular Sky. However there is a chasm between being good enough for regular sky and being PPV worthy. This is definitely the former, but absolutely not the latter.

It'll do you some good Hampo and you'll be in a much better mood come the end of the month
The cards fine, the fact it's PPV is not. The more people support this, the more we're likely to get ripped off in the future and if you don't say something now then you've got noone to blame but yourself when your being shafted later on.
In a perfect world fans would vote with their feet at the live bout and watching it on TV.

Why on earth would you have no objection paying for it Hampo ??
Sky invest hardly nothing of your subscription into Boxing and have the cheek to request additional funds to show a domestic clash ?? Its appalling and So are Sky.

As many have said mate, £15 isn't going to put anyone in the red, its the principle. Sky and Hearn's cards have been total rubbish for majority of the time with hardly any 50/50 fights.
Talk about marginalising the sport Sky are doing a cracking job, wish they'd throw the towel in completely.
