PAOK vs Verona
PAOK Tactics
Verona Tactics
Result
PAOK 1-2 Verona
Finbogies; Sturridge x2
Classic clash of styles this one. I think PAOK have a decent tactical basis but they don’t have the players to pull it off for me. Against other teams they may have more joy but Henderson and Delph can run all day and eventually the pressure will tell and Verona are able to feed the quality they have up top.
I can see PAOK taking the lead but just running out of steam and Verona won’t be denied.
Twente vs Basel
Twente Tactics
Basel Tactics
Result
Twente 2-0 Basel
Nice balance to the Twente side, and what I believe is a very impressive defence too. The midfield is youthful and technically good but someone with experience who will have you sniffing boot polish may not go amiss.
VFL Wolfsburg vs Granada
Wolfsburg Tactics
Granada Tactics
Wolfsburg 0-1 Granada
Brahimi
Pretty intriguing contest and a bit tough to read. On another day I say 0-0 or 0-1 to Wolfsburg. But today is today, and today I think Granada have that sprinkling of attacking talent to see them over the line and I don’t see enough from Wolfsburg in wide areas to exploit Kiessling. Defensively both teams are very impressive and kudos to Miky for going with an attacking outlook, but TSJ has matched him in the middle and is waiting to counter and snatch the goal to win. Too tactically savvy today so a good win in a game that’s far from easy.
Getafe vs Genk
Getafe Tactics
Genk Tactics
Result
Getafe 1-1 Genk
Son; Ibrahimovic
A draw was the only conclusion I could draw here because basically both sides are condensing the pitch so it’s 2/3rds normal sides by focusing down the middle. It forces a scrappy game, ironically with the talent on show. Ibra can do anything out of anywhere but I think tactically Viva has been astute and is worth a point today.
You could probably do with a young signing or two though if you’re Getafe, or hiring Indiana Jones to find the fountain of youth.
Bordeaux vs Montpellier
Bordeaux Tactics
MONTPELLIER tactics
Result
Bordeaux 1-2 Montpellier
Laporte; Eto’o, Holtby
I looked at the formation Marky set out and I wasn’t sold but he explained it brilliantly and I’m comfortable giving Montpellier the win. It’s a formation that brings plenty of dynamism to attacks but may be susceptible to counters on the flanks in future. Problem Nando has is that he’s gone narrow and I can’t see the battle being won in the middle vs 2 headed passing machine Clasirlo.
PAOK Tactics
- Spoiler:
GK - David Ospina
RB - Ricardo Van Rhijn
RCB - John Stones
CB - Rafa Marquez
LCB - Karim Rekik
LB - Saed Kolasinac
CDM - Emre Can
RM - Miroslav Stoch
LM - Sotiris Ninis
CAM - Jorge Valdivia
ST - Alfred Finnbogason
Formation
5-1-2-1-1
Overall tactic: Verona rely on a pace based attack so our idea is simple, deny them space in behind and keep them in front of us, whilst using our own pace on the counter in Ninis/Stoch with Finnbogason able to finish the limited chances he will get
Defensively - Marquez will be tasked with sweeping due to good positional awareness where as the rest of the defence can mark and pickup the runners. Can to sit on the AM and look to spring us on the counter. Valdivia to sit on a DM if they play one, if not press high and stay high to support Finnbogason.
Attack - Get the ball out wide asap and push forward at pace, none of this possession football we hit them hard over and over again, they will wilt. Full backs have license to bomb on if the opportunity arises
Verona Tactics
- Spoiler:
- HowardJanmaat-Reid-De Vrij-Van AanholtBehramiDelph-HendersonCastaignos-------------ZarateSturridge
Tactics:
High tempo worked for us last week so we're going to put another pair of legs in midfield this week to try and force that tactic home, again Delph and Henderson should set the tone in midfield, plenty of legs and energy in that area to force an advantage. We want to prioritise attacking down the wings, with plenty of pace out there, with FBs offering overlaps to hammer home our advantage.
Also the opposing manager has been described as a "poopie Tony Adams". So yeah.
Attacking:
Primarily we want to get at our opponents down the wings, with pacy wingers who can take on a FB, and the FBs should offer overlaps regularly. Henderson and Delph should look to join attacks and run beyond Sturridge, who drops a little deeper than usual in an attempt to draw the CBs out of position.
Defending:
Behrami should look to patrol in front of the back 4, and take particular notice of when the FBs push up. Delph and Henderson to be the engine room in midfield and try to dominate that area, put their midfield under pressure and break up their attacks before they start. Reid get tight to Finnbogason, De Vrij to offer cover. FBs to show their wingers inside, there should be heavy traffic in the midfield which should limit their effectiveness.

Twente Tactics
- Spoiler:

Chambers------Badstuber----Rojo--------Durm
---------------Carvalho----Rabiot-----------------
Promes-------------Calhanoglu------Balde Diao
------------------------Alcacer--------------------
Team talk
Up against Cherries Basel this week and whilst we will not be lackadaisical nor underestimate his team we shall be looking to exploit any tactical errors by their manager such as the mixed messages last week to his fullbacks. With us being fresh from last week's break we can go into the game with the tanks at full power and look to hit the Basel fast and hard from the off putting them immediately on the back foot from which they will then be forced to chase the game and therefore further gaps shall appear.
Defence
A back four with Badstuber given the role of picking up the main striker as they enter threatening positions, be aware of their movement but ensure you don't get dragged out of position. Rojo to assist where required but to pick up threats from their wingers/AM etc if they break into the danger zone. Fullbacks to shepherd their wingers on the outside, no rash challenges and going to ground, slow their attacks down and block crosses. Rabiot main defensive of midfield trio, look to stay back when our FBs go forward.
Attack
Calhanoglu to play in the hole linking up defence to attack. Look to get some early shots in on goal and put their keeper under pressure early whilst Carvalho is given remit to go box to box when he builds up a head of steam. Wingers to alternate between coming inside with through balls to Alcacer and going wide to stretch their backline. Alcacer to never stand still, keep their centrebacks back by dropping in and out of an offside position to give Calhanoglu more space. All forward options to put a shift in on chasing balls down and forcing their defence to play it out early. Invite clumsy tackles and go down easily in areas of danger so Calhanoglu can smash one home.

Twente 2-0 Basel

VFL Wolfsburg vs Granada
Wolfsburg Tactics
- Spoiler:
I want us to go out and look to win this match today, Granada won 4-3 last week in a very open match and it looks like there are goals to be had if we work hard.
--------------------Wolf-------------------
Selassie---Martinez----Prodl---------Cole
--------------------Kroos--------------------
Kishna------Maher-------Vilhena---Beister-
-------------------Kießling------------------
Defensive Tactics: Kroos your role will be important today, we will be attacking but i want you to be that extra man and look to make yourself available for the team. I want our full-backs to periodically get forward and support especially in the wide areas but you will need to get back and support the defence as well so do what you can to not get caught out of position as this could cost us. The Central defenders will need to stand strong as always and look to cut the ball out as much as possible. We need to be organised and we need to be clever with our possession.
Attacking Tactics: They played a 4-4-2 last week with 2 blocks of 4 and in turn i want us to look to poach around the edge of the box and look to slip passes/crosses into the box for Kießling to get on the end of. I want you to make all sorts of movement in the box and make yourself available as much as possible. Vilhena you will be the main source of everything happening today and it may be congested at times but you can push forward as you will be provided with support from Kroos in the holding midfield role today. I want us to be able to put pressure onto the midfield areas and look to have possession there as much as possible, especially if they play 4 in midfield and we have 5, we want to dominate that area of the pitch.
Subs:
Buffel on for Kishna in the 80th Minute.
Ekici on for Maher in the 85th Minute.
Petersen on for Kießling in the 85th Minute.
Granada Tactics
- Spoiler:
Formation: 4-5-1 (4-2-1-2-1)Buffon
Caceres - Vlaar - Alderweireld - Bernat
Marrone ----- Motta
Xavi
Brahimi --------------------- Januzaj
Streller
Subs: Fernandez, Veltman, Jedvaj, Klaassen, te Vrede
Overview: Bremen are strong in defence but I think they are light in midfield so that's where I'm going to hit them hard by packing it with 5 players. I've put Marrone and Motta in together to stop any attacks through the middle, win the ball and keep it. Xavi will sit in the middle of park and dictate play by spreading it out to the wingers (see below). Streller's going to sit right between their CBs and unsettle them, allowing space to open up for Brahimi and Januzaj to exploit.
Defending: I've essentially got 6 men in defensive positions: the 4 at the back and the 2 DMs. Roncrete is charged with marking Kiessling and also making sure the back 4 are well organised, leaving the 2 DMs and Alderweireld to deal with any wingers cutting inside or any AMs charging forward. The 2 FBs will be charged with ensuring the Bremen wingers come inside and play the ball short rather than lofting balls into Kiessling. I'm also expecting a bit of defensive work from the 2 wingers - namely making sure the Bremen wide men can't bomb down the wings by forcing them inside - but I want my wingers to stay relatively upfield, ready for the counter and thus preventing their FBs from moving too far forward.
Attacking: Once we've got the ball back I want Xavi to spread it out to the wingers. They'll be looking to attack the 2 Bremen FBs directly and swing balls into Streller. Alternatively, neither of my wingers are goal shy and I expect them to have shots too. In addition, as I have plenty of defensive cover I want to see my FBS getting forward too (with the gaps left covered by Motta and Marrone) in support of the wingers and really look to overload their FBs. From Bremen's previous tactics they look to be lacking width and that's the area I'm looking to exploit.

Team Overview
Today we'll be looking to overpower the Genk midfield who lacks the legs in midfield enabling us to take control of the game. Cutting off the supply to Ibrahimovic. I want my wingers to play narrow overloading the Genk defence and getting in behind them with our pace.
DEFENSIVE TACTICS
FB to watch the ball and don't dive in, keep them on the outside forcing them to play deeper crosses, I only want 1 FB to push up at a time. Distin pick up Ibrahimovic you've got speed and strength, don't get too tight on him but don't let him settle on the ball. Ayhan pick up Welbeck watch his pace but remember his clumsy but don't get dragged out of position let him go wide. Midfield is key put pressure on them and make them work tiring them out by closing them down quick and forcing them back. Kramer to be more physical in tackling, closing them down and Ledesma watch runners, block, intercept etc minimising the balls to Ibra. Mirallas and Son have to track back.
ATTACKING TACTICS
I want the FB to give us width, hugging the touchline and getting balls constantly into the box and varying your crosses. Ledesma and Kramer take turns to push forward from deep giving us another attacking option. Ledesma keep play ticking for us look to play wingers when they make runs Kramer keep it simple with passing. Mirallas and Son use your pace to hit them and get behind FB and CB play narrow which overloads their defence and puts the pressure on them. Totti play the killer ball to attackers, look for a shot yourself. Di Natale play within the 18 yard box always stay on the move looking for goal scoring opportunity.

TACTICS
Viva has criticised half of you for not being good enough. Prove him wrong by battering his side.
We will look to play in two banks of four when we defend. Their main threats come from Mirallas and Son and it is imperative that they are not allowed to cut inside onto their stronger foot. Our full backs should get a little narrower than usual if necessary, just do not let that happen. Welbeck and Ibrahimovic should stay high up as we are especially dangerous on the counter attack given their lack of pace at the back.
Camus and Chadli should look to drift infield at every opportunity, similar to the Man City style of wingers. Get infield and look to exploit space in front of the defense. Ibrahimovic should be the main man in the centre, and alongside Welbeck should force their defense as deep as possible to create space for the midfielders to exploit, they have to go deep due to their lack of pace. If they don't, play in behind and murder them.

-------Lucas---Alonso --Jojic
--------------Quintero
-------Lacazette ------Bojan
Subs: Olimpa,Orban,Samper,Vidal,El Ghazi,McGeady,Drogba
Team Talk: Up against Marky who is always tactically spot on 2 of his CB's are crippled so expecting a fairly slow pairing of Dominguez/San Jose, Hence we're playing a pacey front 2 to expose that. The back 4 will sit deep due to their pace up top.
Defensive Tactics
- The back 4 to sit fairly deep to stop Eto'o/Origi running in behind, Carrasso to play sweeper
- Laporte to get on Origi & Manolas to take Eto'o, Look to deny them space and time on the ball and don't let them turn.
- Jung/Maxwell look to force the wingers down the line and block crosses, Don't let them cut inside
- Jojic to double up with Maxwell if the winger cuts inside, Same with Lucas and Jung
- Lucas/Alonso to sit infront of the defense and look to cut the supply into the forwards. Jojic to get forward and try track Pirlo closely.
Attacking
- Alonso to sit deep and look to play into Quintero or long over the CB's for our pacey front 2. If try put a player onto Alonso drift into the back 4 and play from there.
- Lucas/Jojic to get further forward linking the play and Jojic to get in the box with late runs.
- Quintero to sit on Pirlo and look to drift around behind him into gaps and look to slide balls in behind the defense.
- Bojan to drift just off the CB's trying to lure them out and make diagonal run in behind the other CB, Drift out wide and run in when need to.
- Lacazette to sit on the last man and just get yourself in behind
Subs: Vidal for Lucas if losing - go 4-2-3-1 with Bojan/Vidal out wide, If winning - Quintero off for Samper to make a defensive diamond
MONTPELLIER tactics
- Spoiler:
Injuries: Sebastian Kehl, Nicolas Isimat-Mirin, Hugo Campagnaro
Starting XI: Julian Speroni, DeAndre Yedlin, Mikel San Jose, Alvaro Dominguez, Jetro Willems, Andrea Pirlo, Jordy Clasie, James Ward-Prowse, Lewis Holtby, Divock Origi, Samuel Eto'o
----------------Speroni
Yedlin - San Jose - Dominguez - Willems
--------------Pirlo - Clasie
--Ward-Prowse-------------Holtby
--------------Origi - Eto'o
Subs: Geoffrey Jourdren, Jon Flanagan, Julian Faubert, Nabil Bentaleb, Ibrahim Afellay, Viktor Fischer, Zakaria Bakkali
After last week's win, we're going to continue with our 4-2-2-2 system, a solid back four with two playmaking DM's ahead of them, Ward-Prowse and Holtby playing as wide midfielders but with the ability to roam wherever they are required, and two strikers to give their defence a real game. Pirlo and Clasie will dictate possession and utilise the movement of Ward-Prowse and Holtby, as well as the front two who will be making plenty of runs down the channels and centrally.
Defence: Speroni to stay big for one on ones and distribute to Pirlo/Clasie. San Jose to track their striker, beat him to any passes towards him and force him to drop deeper to frustrate him, Dominguez to be the first to any second balls. If they play a second striker, Dominguez to mark him and Clasie and Pirlo to track any AM. In possession supply Pirlo/Clasie. Yedlin and Willems to overlap the wingers going forward and get crosses into the front two. Make sure you get back into position ASAP to avoid being caught out. Defensively force their wingers wide and block the crosses. Don't let them cut inside.
Midfield: Pirlo/Clasie sit infront of the back four, get the ball and look to supply the front four. Clasie will be the protection, playing as a DM/CM who will give cover to Pirlo but is also capable of retaining possession and giving Pirlo a close option in possession if being closed down. Ward-Prowse and Holtby will play in free roles, drop alongside Pirlo and Clasie to make two banks of four when we're defending, but in possession be the ones who support the front two, making runs into the area from deep and linking the play.
Attack: Eto'o/Origi to mark the deepest Bordeaux defender, use your height and pace to worry their defenders, drift wide to drag defenders with you, to allow Ward-Prowse and Holtby to make runs down the middle into space for Pirlo/Clasie to pick them out. Both of you more than capable of scoring and assisting, so get shots in where you can and look for your teammate in a better position. Switch positions on occasion to keep the Bordeaux players guessing and drag them out of position.
Subs 70 mins:
If winning: Origi off, Bentaleb on. Switch to 4-5-1 with Bentaleb an extra DM, and Ward-Prowse/Holtby to wide midfield. Absorb pressure then look for Eto'o on the counter.
----------------------Speroni
-----Yedlin - San Jose - Dominguez - Willems
Ward-Prowse - Bentaleb - Pirlo - Clasie - Holtby
-----------------------Eto'o
If drawing: No change, continue the same gameplan.
If losing: Willems and Clasie off, Fischer and Afellay on. Change to 3-1-4-2; Push for goals.
------------------Speroni
-------Yedlin - San Jose - Dominguez
--------------------Pirlo
Afellay - Ward-Prowse - Holtby - Fischer
----------------Origi - Eto'o
