I know that with the game structured as it now is it can't be done anymore, but I preferred it when the Baa's Baa's were effectively the Lions in disguise

What do we think cracking game of running rugby or another bore fest that makes stabbing a fork in your leg look exciting?

I'm not as down about Barbarians matches as some other people, Yappy.
It seems to have become fashionable to slate them, but that attitude bores the poop out of me, frankly. It still means something for the players to be selected and it still gives you a chance to see a game with international quality players just for the hell of it.
Besides, any game where they get to interview this gentleman afterwards is all right by me:

Re: Barbarians v Australia, 1 November
It's a rather underwhelming Barbarians squad in terms of big names and star quality.
The timing of the game doesn't really help.

Are you nuts? Or just out of touch. That baa baas team is packed with excitement. Tevita Lee, Frank Halai, the Honey Badger - worth the price of admission alone. This lot would take out most of the home nations without too many problems. If they can meld as a unit in front they'll cause the wallabies plenty of problems too. It's an excitement machine behind the scrum. With the explosive Luatua to act as a link - Personally I don't rate jk as a coach but it could be a good test of his skills.

Re: Barbarians v Australia, 1 November
I agree - you might think it's lacking in big stars but actually it's full of Super Rugby talent who may not yet be the incumbents for their national sides (there are 7 fringe All Blacks for a start) and I think will really go for it. Great exposure for them.

Shame Kurtley Beale was unavailable for the baa baas, would've been good see him and Genia get a run.

I'm not sure a raft of 'fringe' players is really what the Barabarians needs to redeem its (current) rather lowly reputation. Sure they're good players but we need something of the Harlem Globetrotters to renew interest.
ghostie, the Barbarians don't 'take out' many sides these days.

The quality of the Barbarians should not be doubted, that is a very exciting backline, the back row is quality, and the tight five adequate against the Wallabies, it should be a very entertaining match

Re: Barbarians v Australia, 1 November
What I'm suggesting is merely that your knowledge of genuine star players from beyond your shores may be preventing you from recognising the quality in that line up. Much like the people of Chicago are not recognising the NZ Blacks right now. I watch a lot of rugby and believe me you will be fawning over these same players when they are recruited as the marquee players at your domestic clubs.
It is a shame that the lack of depth in British rugby right now prevents enough quality plYers to field a more local team. But lucky the Giants of the South once again have a surplus!

Re: Barbarians v Australia, 1 November
Its a very raw side from an international perspective, the front five a bit of a scattergun look to it. The backs will have to make up with enthusiasm what they lack in experience though JK is at least probably his best in that area.
Definitely a side to entertain.

Exactly what Im thinking . Wales needs to play a weaker team first . We never play well the first game and again we ll get our arses handed on a plate . The Australia players will also want to impress the New coach . . You can train and train but nothing prepares you better then game time .

Yes. BaaBaas v Australia; a defacto NZ B really with 10 kiwi starters versus Australia; and NZ's historic clash at soldier field in front of the largest live American rugby audience precedes the "AIs".
Ever been to a restaurant and felt the starter was better than the main?

It is quite obvous that John Kirwan has decided this is not a Barbarian team, puts all the "other" nations on the bench.

He's a rubbish coach Biltong. Look at the resources he has in Auckland - and what he does with them. 12th, 11th, 10th.
Suspect the whole thing is an Nzru ploy to get more Kiwi players on the northern tour. Luatua, Slade,
halai - could all come in handy if there were say,
An injury to Mccaw or Carter doesn't stack up. (Which he won't)

Good news, George.
We need more of these mean looking be-bearded blokes willing to run through brick walls for the team. It's good to see Skelton on the bench too.

Agree. Been waiting a long time to see Speight play the international scene. The one to watch for in this match, and indeed the entire AI's.
A class act with the ball.

Not keen on Toomua at 12, think he'll kill most of the attacking ball that Oz generate.

Is Cheika desperately trying to get game time for the overlooked Genia and Cooper whom he prefers as his first choice pivot compatriots or is he merely resting his first choice players and buying into the fun and spectacle of what should be one of the fastest,

That. Would have been special. Imagine Fiji vs Tonga with Henry Speight in one back line and Malakai Fekitoa in the other! I'd pay to see that. I suppose Jared Payne could be the water boy?

Re: Barbarians v Australia, 1 November
Now you're talking... I tell you, I'd rather watch the Pacific Islanders play each other even without those lads than New Zealand vs Australia any day. I'm just so bored of watching New Zealand vs Australia. Didn't they play another Bledisloe game again recently? I mean after the Rugby Championship?
What a snooze! Come to think of it, the only games in the Rugby Championship I actually have any interest in are the ones featuring Argentina. Sometimes I watch South Africa vs New Zealand and think 'Yes, that is a perfect demonstration of how rugby at the highest level should be played. And no, I haven't taken enough notice of it to be able to name a single thing about it that I found interesting'

Re: Barbarians v Australia, 1 November
Yes, it's boring how they keep moving the ball around and running up and down - quite dizzying. I guess both unions will be working on more rolling mauls, scrum resets, "injury" breaks, line out planning meetings and kicks at goal - that's what the punters stump up their cash to see!
Also they need to focus on making the result a foregone conclusion after 60 minutes and focusing on one team trying to stay within 7 points whilst the other slows the game to a crawl to prevent any further tries being scored - that's a skill both sorely lack.
We can but hope that this is encouraged at next years RWC by a spate of unnecessarily pedantic refereeing and insistence on involving the TMO after every phase!

Loving the Baabaas plays,
We've seen the 13 man lineout before, but not the NFL lineout throw or he bicycle kick - which was so nearly a first try.

Aussies are looking dangerous in attack but decidedly vulnerable in defence. Speight looks very handy, though.
Some stunning offloads from the BaaBaas - especially for a scratch side.
