The Shift?
I consider myself someone who knows a little bit about boxing but i never knew this was a conscious technique with an actual name (the shift). I just found a video on it explaining its use prior to 1950, and how GGG uses it now!
I'd always considered it poor form (and a little too similar to martial arts to take it seriously). I can see the advantages but to me, at least, it's an extremely dangerous move, and one which completely compromises defense ...as soon as the rear leg is removed from the floor the boxer loses the ability to push-off in any direction or even slip effectively. This means mid-pivot you are a sitting duck, most importantly your momentum is carrying you toward a potential counter punch without any means of avoiding it. IMO that's why the technique probably died out. (A clever, fleet footed boxer will exploit this 'mistake' by GGG.
I've only watched the first couple of minutes of the clip so I'm off to watch the rest now.....i may realise im completely wrong

Re: The Shift?
I'm on my laptop and it opens fine. I'll see if it opens on my tablet, one moment...

Re: The Shift?
Got it. Thanks lads.
Perfect example of old school technique - most modern fighters have no idea how to deal with it.

Re: The Shift?
Informative video with quite a lot of spin to make The Shift sound ultra awesome. Basically, The Shift generates power, close opponents down, and creates unexpected angles.
However, as soon as a clever counter-puncher with a bit of pop gets onto that (providing they haven't been knocked out by then) they'll catch GGG midpivot when he over commits to a punch or uses it to close distance.
On the flipside once he's inside, the angles created by the shifting, combined with his power, will give anyone a hardtime.
its a good technique but not without its limitations (like everything)..and its better to have in your arsenal than not

It's basically good mastery of space and footwork. This guy does a lot of these vids:
