Basel 1-1 Granada
Montpellier 2-2 Getafe
I thought Viva edged this tactical battle , and his wingers will give anyone in this league problems. I'd almost be tempted to free them from defensive constraints and catch the FBs out of position. I thought Marky could do with summarising his tactics to make them a bit easier to digest (maybe I'm just thick). That said his attacking talent is too much for an unconvincing Getafe defense, a counter to keeping the inverted wingers outside may be necessary against better FBs.
Palermo 3-2 Genk
I'm always a sucker for the **** it, we're going for it approach, and its a good idea from Trebs, and I definately think theres goals to be had based on both teams tactics. Soddys team oozes class going forward and in midfield though, and vs an overextended Genk team with an extra midfielder, I think they win a thriller. Against a lesser team, Trebs definitely would've had joy for me though.
PAOK 1-1 Bremen
I thought Gerrard in a midfield 2 against 3 was a mistake, as it leaves Can taking on 3 by himself effectively imo. 2 CMs are viable, but against 3 they both need the legs to put pressure on imo. I see Bremen controlling the ball in midfield for long spells, though the way to attack PAOK would be with width given their tactics, and I'm not sure Kishna and Buffel are of the standard to really tear PAOK a new one. PAOK might not see a great deal of the ball but they'll cause more problems with it, leading to a draw imo.
Twente 2-2 Bordeaux
2 high quality sides, both have the firepower for goals in this game. Nando would pose far greater threat down the flanks imo, as with nobody to mark and the option to get forward, they'd bomb on at will and really cause problems for Twente, putting the wing backs under a lot of pressure, this being the weak point of Twentes tactics imo. That said, Nando cedes advantage in the middle to Hero, and I can't ignore that, with the quality Twente have in there, and although the two deeper CMs blunt that threat somewhat, I don't think they can consistently.

We will look to press high up the pitch and put pressure on the opposition to cause mistakes and to capitalise. Otherwise keep the possession and look for the opponents to open up, they can't score without the ball! This will hopefully allow us to stretch the opposition defensive line and create the space for a few attacks.Attacking:Blind to sit in front of the centre backs to provide cover and allow the full backs to push on.Delph to play a support role in attack and arrive late into the box.Lallana and Simic to both play of Campbell, looking to thread balls into Campbell or keep possession and play back to the central midfield three.Full backs to provide width and energy to the attack, with Blind capable of forming a back three with the centre backs if needed.Defensive:High press up the pitch, with pressure leading from the forward three.Mexes to lead defence and man mark the lone striker. Overview: After my blunder last week I want to make amends for that by going gung ho against a decent Basel but with a questionable defence. Therefore, we’re 4-3-3ing this bad boy with a solid defence, a midfield anchor, 2 playmakers and 3 forward players playing narrow, looking to attack the Basel CBs directly with power, pace, style and grace.
Defence: Vlaar and Alderweireld to work in tandem to pick up a lone striker, marking one each if there are two. FBs to defend against wingers and any strikers drifting outside. Show their wingers the touchline and give them space to operate on the outside by come down on them like a ton of bricks if they cut inside. Once my defence wins the ball back I expect them to get it to the Xavi-Klaassen pairing as quickly as possible who’ll look to start a counter attack. I want Motta to be my midfield anchor. He’ll be the man to break up the play in the middle of the park and get it forward. Never cross the halfway line.
Attack: We’re playing a narrow 3 up front looking to attack the CBs. I want Xavi to sit back a little when we’re going forward with Klaassen going up in support. Streller should look to sit in between the two Basel CBs with Januzaj and Brahimi trying to exploit any gaps left. The most important thing to do is keep the ball moving quickly – Brahimi and Januzaj should look to provide any deft balls through the defence to Streller. They are the brains, he is the brawn. I’m not wanting the FBs to come forward much during this match, thus helping to prevent any counters down the wing.
Montpellier 2-2 Getafe
- Montpellier:
- MONTPELLIER v Getafe
Injuries: Sebastien Kehl, Julian Speroni, Samuel Eto'o
Starting XI: Sebastien Frey, DeAndre Yedlin, Mikel San Jose, Alvaro Dominguez, Jetro Willems, Jordy Clasie, Andrea Pirlo, Andros Townsend, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Shinji Kagawa, Divock Origi
-----------------Frey
Yedlin - San Jose - Dominguez - Willems
-------------Clasie - Pirlo
----Townsend - Kagawa - Sigurdsson
-----------------Origi
Subs: Geoffrey Jourdren, Jon Flanagan, Nicolas Isimat-Mirin, Seydou Keita, Lewis Holtby, Zakaria Bakkali, Dominic Solanke
Tough game today against Getafe, playing 4-2-3-1 with two deep lying playmakers, roaming AM's and a powerful pacy striker. Ball retention is key but I want us to be more direct today, give Kagawa/Sigurdsson/Townsend the opportunity, the time and space to cause problems and utilise the space between their defence and midfield.
Defence: Frey to stay big for one on ones and distribute to Pirlo/Clasie. San Jose to track their striker, beat him to any passes towards him and force him to drop deeper to frustrate him, Dominguez to be the first to any second balls. If they play a second striker, Dominguez to mark him and Clasie/Pirlo to track any AM. In possession supply Clasie/Pirlo. Yedlin and Willems to overlap the wingers going forward and get crosses into Origi. Make sure you get back into position ASAP to avoid being caught out. Defensively force their wingers wide and block the crosses. Don't let them cut inside.
Midfield: Clasie/Pirlo sit infront of the back four, get the ball and look to supply the front four. Sigurdsson and Townsend will play wide so they are able to switch from playing alongside Kagawa when we're attacking but drop and form a midfield four with Pirlo and Clasie when defending. Utilise Yedlin and Willems overlapping and use them to play them down the wing or use the space to cut inside. Kagawa to play as our AM, drift left and right and deeper to drag their DM out of position and look to supply Origi with plenty of opportunities. Townsend and Sigurdsson playing as inverted wingers, both pick up the ball wide and cut inside to leave space for the overlapping fullback, shoot or create when in advanced positions.
Attack: Origi to mark the deepest Getafe defender, use your pace and strength to worry their defenders, drift wide to drag defenders with you, to allow Sigurdsson/Townsend/Kagawa to make runs down the middle into space for Pirlo/Clasie to pick them out. Both of you more than capable of scoring and assisting, so get shots in where you can and look for your teammate in a better position. Switch positions on occasion to keep the Getafe players guessing and drag them out of position.
Subs 70 mins:
If winning: Kagawa off, Keita on. Switch to 4-5-1 with Keita playing at CM alongside Clasie and Pirlo, and forming a midfield three, Townsend/Sigurdsson to wide midfield. Absorb pressure then look for Origi on the counter.

---Yedlin - San Jose - Dominguez - Willems

If drawing: No change
If losing: Willems and Clasie off, Holtby and Solanke on. Change to 3-1-4-2; Push for goals.

TT: Gone with a 4-1-4-1,Ledesma playing deep, right in front of the back 4 screening and giving them protection and enough room for him to dictate the tempo. De Jong to play in cm to put pressure on their midfield higher up the pitch. We've got 2 wide men who will offer us service aswel as a genuine goal threat. We have a balance in midfield that will allow us to play Football or fight them if they want.
DEFENSIVE TACTICS
I want to keep their wingers on the outside, forcing them to cross from deep. Terry to pick up main CB Ayhan to cover. FB only to go up 1 at a time giving us width. Ledesma to play infront of the back 4, jockeying and intercepting the ball. Both our wingers must defend and track back. De Jon pressure from high up so we can attack closer to their goal if we win the ball.
ATTACKING TACTICS
Ledesma look for our wingers making runs in behind their FB, always demand the ball looking for openings for us. FB give us width when our wingers tuck/cut in with constant balls into box. De Jong play it simple with your passing, sharp and short. Totti join in attacks with Di Natale or play the through all to our attackers. Mirallas and Son look to cut in and make a front 3 with Di Natale. Di Natale play as a predator always on the move look for gosl scoring opportunity.

Palermo 3-2 Genk
- Palermo:

Overall
We're sticking to a normal structure today and we're going to look to win the ball in the middle and attack down the flanks with pace.
Defence
We're keeping a solid back four when being attacked today, with the midfield three in front covering back for the full backs where they're committed upfield, and shielding the defence in the middle.
Ibra is a real threat and we're keeping the gaps between midfield and defence small so as to not afford him time and space on the ball.
We're relatively comfortable that the threat from Genk will not be out wide and we back our FBs to either show them inside to the strength of our formation or block crosses from outside.
Attack
The main thrust will be down the wings today and when we win it back we want to be faster to get upfield than our oppo. That starts with the midfield three, especially Pardo, distributing the ball quickly and accurately to exploit our pacey wingers and full backs.
Crosses should be knocked in where possible and Emenike will fight for the ball in the box, while the winger on the other side will attack the far post for scraps.
When our full backs are forward they should provide an overlap to both allow a crossing option and allow our wingers to cut inside and outnumber their defence. Direct running/shooting will come from that.

TACTICS
This week we are going to really go for it, with an attacking line up. We'll outscore them, it's as simple as that. Go for it at every opportunity and focus our attacks down the right hand side. At least if we lose this time we went for it.
De Sanctis - Don't let them score goals.
Aurier/Evra - Get forward one at a time, we are playing more attacking CMs so three of you should be back. Look to get narrow defensively as their wingers like to cut inside.
Barzagli/Dier - Dier should be the main man-marker of Emineke, match him physically for pace and strength with Barzagli looking to sweep in behind.
Herrera/Mavuba - Both should play box to box roles today, full of energy and looking to get forward when possible, contributing to the attacking play. Get forward to pin their midfielders back, preventing their attacking quality from coming through.
Chadli/Aarons - Attack your full backs today, look to get wide and stretch their defense, creating more room for the attackers. If they stay narrow, you've got space for free crosses, if they close down, brilliant.
Kane/Ibra - Kane, put yourself up against Coloccini and beat him for pace. Do not take the goalie gloves under any circumstances. Ibra, put yourself against Musacchio who is a decent defender but can make rash early tackles, you can beat him aerially.
SUBSTITUTIONS
If winning - Diaz for Kane. Move to a 4-5-1 with Diaz holding, Herrera/Mavuba box to box.
If drawing - Elia and Klose for Kane and Aarons, straight swaps to give new attacking threats.
If losing - Klose and Lampard for Aarons and Chadli, move to a 4-3-3 with wing backs pushing on to provide width.

Subs:, Giakoumis, Rekik, Valdivia, Georgiadis, Grenier, Athansiadis, Talisca.
General:
We see the weakness in Bremen side in defence and out wide, so we are targeting attacking them and really testing that defence. We will do this out wide so our wide men will play as wingers and get at the full backs, whilst the FBs will support and overlap. Their strength is with Gundogan so we are not playing an AM to nullify his impact in filling the gap between midfield and defence, although when we are defending Kruse will drop onto him to limit his time on the ball.
Attacking Tactics:
Gerrard to sit deep as the playmaker, picking the passes and getting the ball out wide.
Tadic and Bellarabi to play wide, attack the full backs and get crosses into the box.
Full backs to get forward and overlap, although only one at once, never at the same time.
Kruse and Munir to play in tandem, with Kruse being the focal point and Munir getting close to him to play off him.
Defensive Tactics:
High pressure, pressing from the front, as soon as we loose ball
Marquez selected for his experience to pick up Kiessling, Stones to pick up second striker or play spare sweeping up.
Full backs to pick up any wingers, keeping them away deep and facing away from goal.
Gerrard and Can to sit in front of back four and provide protection.
When defending, Kruse to drop back onto Gundogan to limit his time and space on the ball.

---------------Wolf----------------

---------------Kroos---------------
------Maher---------Gundogan---
Kishna------Kiessling------Buffel-
I want us to have quick build up play with lots of intent from the start, i want us to play PAOK at the same game except we are not going to allow them to get their full backs out and the aim is to pin them back into their own half. We are going to exploit the wide areas as much as possible.
Attacking Tactics:
-The chances are they will be playing a quick passing game with the full backs pushing on so i want Buffel and Kishna to push on and get at the full backs and make it difficult for them to get out.
-Gundogan you will be the controller today. I want you to make the ball work for you and look to push it out into the wide areas as that is where we will be focusing our attacks due the the narrow lineup in the midfield area. I also want you to look to slip passes through to Keissling too if you see the pass is on. I also want you to push on when you see fit and look to get in and amongst the midfield area to look to control the game even more.
-Maher i want you to get beyond Gundogan and Kroos and look to supply the 3 most attacking players in front of you, look to get on Gerrard or whoever plays in that position and make it difficult for them to hold that position.
-Kishna and Buffel you will both be getting space out wide in this system and the ball may come to you quickly out wide in which i want you to get the ball into the box in the air or to feet and hopefully Kiessling will be on the end of it.
-Kiessling i want you to make plenty of movement in and around the box, the chances are you will have someone on you the whole game so i want you to make it as difficult as possible for whoever that is.
Defensive Tactics:
-Selassie and Cole i want you both to watch the runs and passes from the wider players who most likely will be looking to get beyond you or cut inside into the area. Don't get dragged out and don't get too sucked in.
- Martinez and Prodl i want you both to stand your ground - Martinez you will mark the striker who will most likely be Kruse, don't allow him to get the better of you and look to win the aerial battles. He may try and beat you for pace too so be on your toes.
-Kroos you are sitting behind Maher and Gundogan basically working as another defender looking to sweep out wide and protect the wider areas too. I also want you to cover for Maher when he moves forward and looks to cause trouble for Gerrard.
80th Minute: Makiadi on for Maher.
85th Minute: Vilhena on for Kroos to play a more defensive role for the rest of the match.
90th Minute: Di Santo on for Kiessling.
- Twente:
- ------------------------Rafael-----------------
Rosales---Chambers----Badstuber---Gonzalez-----Durm
---------------Carvalho----Suarez-----------------
----------------------Calhanoglu--------------
-------------------Berahino---Paco---------------------
Team talk
A change in formation this week to hit Bordeaux with a surprise two upfront of form guys Berahino and Paco supported by Calhanoglu. We've also gone with 5 at the back to offer more protection whilst allowing the wing backs the remit of providing an outlet down the flanks. Attacking wise it's all about fast intelligent movement with balls on the ground.
Defence
With five at the back then it allows us to play the numbers game on Bordeaux when under pressure, if they play with one up front then double up with the third man operating just in front protecting against an AM, if two up front then all three close them down. With three in the centre it takes a little pressure off the wingbacks but I still expect them to put a shift in, no frills defensively, stay on their feet and slow their wing options down shepherding them down the flanks. In the centre of the pitch Carvalho is given the enforcer role this week, nothing pretty, nullify their movement early.
Attack
Suarez playing deeper than normal given the playmaker role, intelligent neat passes, looking for movement in front of you of the three youngsters. Calhanoglu to link up play, stretch their defence out to you and if heavily marked as expected then look to invite tackles from which you can unleash hell from your free kicks.
A double pairing upfront of wonderkids, Alcacer to take the slightly deeper role and to be used to create confusion, looking for knockdowns and swift 1-2s whilst Berahino is the poacher upfront hanging on the shoulder of the last defender dragging him back towards goal, be clinical, be ruthless.
Subs
75m Balde Diao for Alcacer, straight swap with fresh legs.
- Bordeaux:
- -------------Kameni
Jung ---Alex ---- Laporte -- Tremoulinas
-------Alonso -- Lucas
Narsingh ------------Quintero
--------Sakho -- Lacazette
Subs: Olimpa,Chalme,Jojic,El Ghazi,Bojan,Drogba,Vidal
Team Talk: Up against Hero's Twente U21's, Shall look to dominate them with our physical presence at the back and infront of the defense, Shall look to exploit their full backs by going 4-2-2-2 to be solid infront of the CBs and get the AM/Wingers into the game.
Defensive Tactics
- Back 4 to sit deep to negate all the pace in their side, Any gap left behind the defense is the keepers sweeping area
- Laporte to get tight to Alcacer and look to use physical presence to bully him off the ball. Alex to sweep up alongside Laporte if gets turned and to watch for Calhanoglu making late runs.
- Jung & Tremoulinas to force their wingers down the line and make them cross the ball into our land of giants. If they cut inside look to put a tackle in before get a shot away.
- Alonso to screen infront of the defense to stop supply into Paco & Lucas to get close to Calhanoglu within 25 yards but otherwise sit with Alonso and don't go too far forwards. Both to help the full backs if the winger cuts inside. When the full backs go up the pitch look to cover them if possible.
Attacking Tactics
- The full backs to get up the pitch and overlap our wingers and whip the ball into Sakho & Lacazette
- Alonso to drop into the defense and spray balls out wide quickly as possible or up to Sakho or into a full back getting forward
- Narsingh to look to run at Durm with his pace and whip balls in, Look to stand the ball up when possible don't be afraid to hit an early cross if can't get down the line, On occasion cut inside if Jung is going past you
- Quintero to drift in from the left hand side to give Tremoulinas space, When drift inside look to get between Carvalho & the CB's and look to create with our pace getting in behind them.
- Sakho to look to get on the smaller of the two CB's with Subo injured and use your physical strength and aerial ability to get yourself a run on them in the box, Don't be afraid to try roll them and run in behind.
- Lacazette to drop off the CB and make diagonal runs in behind the defense with his pace and look to finish clinically with chances he gets.
Subs: Ozyakup for Sakho after 75 mins if losing to give us an extra body in midfield, Jojic for Lucas to run about the midfield closing down.
