Roach says Ray Robinson would F#*CKING destroy Mayweather
First topic message reminder :
Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach has lashed out at Floyd Mayweather Jr., for claiming to be the "best fighter of all-time." And Mayweather also stated in multiple interviews that he's even better than "Sugar" Ray Robinson (173-19-6, 108KOs) - who many experts regard as the greatest fighter to ever lace up a pair of gloves. Floyd's uncle/trainer Roger Mayweather also views Robinson as the greatest of all-time.
Roach believes Mayweather is carefully selecting his opponents, because he wants to retain his undefeated record at all costs.
"He wants to stay undefeated, because as long as he's undefeated he can say that he's better than everyone else out there. He says that he's better than Sugar Ray Robinson, because Robinson has lost fights before. Does anyone really think that? Not real fight people, no. I mean Robinson would f***ing destroy him. Let's face it, [Robinson is] a much better fighter, but the thing is he has losses on his record so Mayweather can say that he's better than these guys because he's undefeated. That zero means so much to him that he won't take a chance. He won't fight any fighter who has a pulse," Roach said.

Exactly. Beating Bradley (officially) deserves kudos especially given that, in the run up to the rematch, all we were hearing was how Bradley was "still undefeated", an even more "evolved fighter to the one that faced Pac the first time" and that he had gone to war with Provodnikov and clinched the victory on heart in a "fight of the year" candidate. Then, he handed JMM a boxing lesson - a guy who had just destroyed Pac with a possibly career ending KO.catchweight wrote:Not to mention after a tough third fight with Marquez and escaping by a hair he takes him on for a fourth time. 4 of Pacquias last 5 fights have been against top welterweights. Protected my ass.
Whilst it wasn't done in the most thrilling fashion, there was no doubt Pac thoroughly deserved the win over Bradley. And Tim is still seen as under-appreciated and in his prime. Can't see how that's anything other than a quality win for Pacquiao.

Going to war with a face first brawler and beating a 41 year old really proves your class

I think Pacquiao proved in their first fight that Bradley wasn't from the very top drawer and his subsequent fight with Provodnikov proved that.

Truss, I'm only going by the pre-fight dialogue/narrative, in part generated by the boxing press, but also largely supported by many people who tipped Bradley to "put things right" and beat Pacquiao conclusively. The wins over Prov and JMM were cited as part of an argument by many that Bradley would go on and win the rematch with Pac. Yet after he lost, they become redundant?TRUSSMAN66 wrote:Going to war with a face first brawler and beating a 41 year old really proves your class

Who were these people that predicted Bradley would beat Pacquiao in the rematch?

Chris? He was the one that managed to somehow score the first the Bradley (or maybe Manny by 1).....
Judging by this weekend, don't see Floyd have tremendous issues with Pac, just doesn't look anything like the force of 08/09.

Agreed. he is still a good fighter and would give Floyd something to think about early on with his speed but Floyd would adapt. Manny still has some power but he isn't the hurracaine of a few years back.

Speed down, power down, output down = challenge down.
Only remote positive is that his chin looked back up to speed and given Floyd's lack of power at the higher weights also, would like to think Manny would just throw similar caution to the wind and not worry about Floyd ko-ing him - just go hell for leather.

He could do that but he would need more physical strength to push Floyd back. He still has probably the best chance out of any fighter 147 or lower. I would definitley make Floyd a heavy favourite.
Anyway not to worry, fight will more likely still not happen

Haha, Toppy is always quick to jump all over that one!
Aye, hold my hands up - thought Bradley would be able to outpoint a declining and uninterested Pacquiao in the rematch. I genuinely felt that Pacquiao was all in after the Marquez ko loss and then the best part of a year out of the ring between Marquez IV and Rios, but he's come back well in 2014 to put me well and truly back in my place. For all the back and forth and attention when it comes to Manny, he is a great, great fighter and his wins this year are the first ones in a while which I feel really add to his legacy and / or re-embellish his pound for pound claims (he's not number one anymore, but has arguably consolidated himself as number two for the time being with Rigondeaux and Ward's progress stalling).
Back on topic, anyway, Mayweather versus Robinson. If we're being honest and taking agendas out of it, Robinson is unlikely to "destroy" Mayweather or have an easy time with him. His size advantages, power, attacking inclinations and the fact that he's as quick as Mayweather make him favourite, as I think Floyd is going to have a hard time getting in to the fight from an attacking point of view, but you'd have to be blind to Mayweather's much superior defence, counter-punching and own great ring smarts to say that he hasn't got a chance or that he'd be in way, way over his head.
People get testy about anyone talking up another guy's chances against Robinson (again, let me stress, he's favourite against Floyd) but there's no such thing as a perfect, totally infallible fighter, and Mayweather has shown time and time again that he's got the skillset, ring IQ and temperament to compete well in any era, for me. I've argued before that while Robinson was a beautiful fighting specimen, it's his all-round mix of skill, career accomplishments and who he beat combined which makes him the greatest rather than automatically being leagues ahead of everyone in a head-to-head sense. Even in Ray's Welterweight pomp, if Gavilan and Henry Brimm (even Robinson conceded that he was fortunate to get the nod in his win over Brimm, and their other fight was a draw) can give him a good test then there's no reason why Floyd can't. Suspect Mayweather might be a little outgunned to make an impression with the judges but he's too good to be outclassed or embarrassed here.
