OWGR - End of Year 2014
First topic message reminder :
Former PGATour winner Arjun Atwal wins the Dubai Open, the Asian Tour finale, and the final OWGR rated tournament of 2014. He goes from ranked in the 1100's to somewhere around #430.
Tommy Fleetwood misses an invite to the 2014 Masters by less than 1 OWGR point (gross). Every shot counts!! Of course, Fleetwood has an excellent opportunity to crash the top 50 by playing well in the early events of 2015. He probably needs a couple top 10s in the Middle East to secure a spot in the Cadillac.
Here is the projected top 100 going into 2015. Players ranked below 50 and already in the Masters are bolded.

Re: OWGR - End of Year 2014
I wasn't surprised the delta between the PGAT and ET was growing, and knew it was even before I saw the other article the other day... I was just surprised at the extent of it. We've had this conversation before, and as you might recall, the ET was growing closer to the PGAT via the sudden jump of Euro success in world big events along with "member issues" but that trend was already moderating if not reversing in 2012.GPB wrote:Robo: I am not surprised at all that the delta between the PGAT and ET is growing.
And the reason, IMO, is the FEX Cup. Until very recently, the ET always had elite (or near elite) that were not members of the PGATour. Monty, Westwood, Kaymer.
Now the highest ranked ET player that is not a PGATour member is #29 Joost Luiten. Not exactly an "Elite" World Class player.
I have complained over the years the OWGR is not dynamic, it takes month and months to see a shift. But it will change. And what you saw in 2014 vs 2012 is the result of Westwood, Kaymer, Rory not playing in as many ET events because they are dual tour players now.
BTW....what Tier do players ranked from 101-199 fall into? Tier 2.5?
But still, while the roughly 2 point gain by the PGAT wasn't unexpected (due to the points you raised and others), I was expecting a similar corresponding decline on the ET side... but NOTHING like the 6.5 point ET decline. What I hadn't realized was despite the addition of the ET final series, it didn't result in a gain of points value. As far as the final series, the BMW was already on the schedule in 2012, and Turkey replacing Singapore was about a wash... so there really wasn't a gain there.
But the biggest killer to the ET average was almost all the events replacing lost events, plus most of the new events on the schedule were FAR below the value of the rest of the schedule. I "kinda" knew that instinctively, but hadn't really looked at it closely before... And it's NOT the top rated guys joining the PGAT affecting that much, because not many of those top guys were playing in the lowest rated events anyway. Going from 13 events in the 20's or lower to 21 illustrates the loss in value.
And as far as tiers... LOL.. I wasn't trying to do a full tier system... just using "groups" of players to illustrate how the reduced event point issues might affect differing levels of players. My guess is, other than qualifying even less occasionally for the biggie events... most 101-200 ET members would get into most the same ET regular events as the 51-100 guys would. Most that is, not all.

Re: OWGR - End of Year 2014
robo,
Fascinating piece of work; thanks.
No doubt that the quality of tournament fields has declined in recent years. The Spanish events are almost an endangered species just three or four years after there being close to half a dozen, which would attract the likes of Sergio, M-A J, Gonzo, Quiros etc, plus they were attractive venues for Northern Europe golfers.
And the decline of Casey, Donald, Poulter and Westwood has taken high-ranking owgr points out of the equation, even if they only played in Europe comparatively seldom. Plus Europe seldom sees Schwartzel and Oosthuizen any more.
Europe this year has to hope players like Colsaerts, Hanson, Olesen find their form plus the rehabilitation of Casey and Karlsson, maybe even Quiros, etc, continues. Otherwise, we'll see further declines.

Re: OWGR - End of Year 2014
Kwini... if there are further declines... I wouldn't expect them to be much. IMO there's a relatively "fixed" number of Euro's who can bolt the Euro Tour for the PGAT due to all the factors of gaining and keeping membership, so I sense were are fairly close to that max. I'd kind of expect an ebb and flow from here.
Also... it appears as though a few possibly stronger events are coming back onto the schedule... I'd guess the Lawrie event might out perform the Volvo MP of at least last year, the new Thailand event has a chance to be better than the minimum, and maybe that Hero guy will "buy him some players" for the Hero Indian Open.
And of course... if the ET management team has been as bad as you guys seem to think, perhaps we're looking at an upgrade and some possible future success out of the new guy(s) maybe? Hopefully getting some more events back into Europe proper? The economy still might not be gangbusters great, but maybe at least it stabilized enough that some might be willing to jump back into the sponsorship game.

Re: OWGR - End of Year 2014
Four place drop for Woods apparently, and it looks like Dustin Johnson is catching the down escalator also; he must be down 3 or 4 places.
Love the way Golf journos catch on to PD's, robo's and GPB's projections and report them as if they weere Einstein. Two years ago, before Doug Ferguson discovered PD, they decried the OWGR's as unfathomable and unfair.
Good work guys!

Re: OWGR - End of Year 2014
The OWGR is really just applied arithmetic. Its not like it is Differential Equations and LaPlace Transforms.
Anyone with a rudimentary knowledge of arithmetic can do it if they want to do it. The formulas are transparent, well maybe translucent because they don't explain it very well and they don't provide examples
But it is Voluminous and can be intimidating, and nearly impossible without spreadsheet software.
Sagarin Rankings. That is a different story. I understand the foundation, but he must have done some mushrooms coming up with his assumptions and formulas.

Re: OWGR - End of Year 2014
Field updates for Sony... Sony Monday 4-spotters are Trey Mullinax, Roger Sloan, Tom Johnson & Curtis Thompson.
Sloan's entry moves him off the alternate list and thus Sterne up one place to what's still being shown as 6th alternate.... Hawaii not gonna happen for Sterne unless there are a slew of other WD's not yet being shown... which is VERY unlikely... Like GPB said.. hope he's made his way to Abu Dhabi.
Of more interest among the 4-spotters might be LSU senior Curtis Thompson, brother of PGAT player Nicolas, but more notably sister Lexi Thompson. I've been reading blurbs for a while about how Curtis is supposedly the most talented golfer in the family. Well I don't know about THAT... but at least we'll get a chance to see how he stacks up against his bro in Hawaii. I've never seen Curtis play... I hope they show him for at least a few shots, but wouldn't expect it unless he surprises with something special...

Re: OWGR - End of Year 2014
It's really no wonder the European Tour is losing its prestige. The 2015 schedule begins with TWENTY events in Africa and Asia. It's not until event 21, the Spanish Open in May, that the Tour comes to Europe. We then have a run of 19 events in Europe before heading off to Asia for the final 5 events.
All these tin pot events like Tshwane and Hero do nothing for the credibility and prestige of the tour

Re: OWGR - End of Year 2014
Last year I can't recall exactly the situation... only 45 of the Web.com guys entered and they all got in (2 via designated SE and 43 via priority)... Priority list went 1 spot beyond that into the 126-150 category to get Robert Streb.... I know there was at least one injury situation... not sure about the others.GPB wrote:Robo, hasn't the Sony usually got all the Web-commers into the tournament?
2013 it was 47... with no listed alternates in the web.com category. Priority went 2 players into the next category after web.com/Q-school guys.
2012 it was 43 played... same as 2013 in that apparently all that entered out of the category got in as it went to 3 into the priority list after web.com/Q-school guys.
Bottom line: Yes... it appears as though all the web.com/Q-school guys who have wanted in have gotten in for the last 3 years.
EDIT: Went back and checked Sony 2014... O'Hair, Matteson, Cantlay & Alvarado were web.com category eligible and not entered. Cantlay & Alvarado were for sure injury situations... don't know about the other two.
EDIT 2: Other early season weeks last year for Web.com guys:
Humana - 6 who entered didn't get in. (see note)
Farmers - all who wanted in got it... it went 6 spots past Webbies
WMPO - 6 got into the WMPO... 1 via priority... other 5 by other means...
ATT Pebble - all that wanted in got in... priority went 10 spots below webbie's...
Riviera - 14 got into Northern Trust... 8 via priority... 4 via other means.
NOTE: Humana is a full field of 156, but is a hybrid in priority in that "extra" categories are added above the webbies. For instance: All RC and PC "member" players from the last two playings (for either side)... past champions for the last 10 years instead of 5 years, + all past champions prior to 1999.

Re: OWGR - End of Year 2014
Somehow they need to reduce the number of tournaments. Currently it seems it's all about quantity rather than quality and the result is a very dilluted product. IMO they should skip some of the co-sanctioned overseas tournament, and either shorten the season or play every other week only. I don't give a toss about Tshwane, Mauritius and Hero either.raycastleunited wrote:It's really no wonder the European Tour is losing its prestige. Re: OWGR - End of Year 2014
Thanks Mac: You might to edit "Jose Maria" to "Jose Maria Olazabal".
The Latin America Amateur is being played this week in Buenos Aires.
And any wins on the PGAT before the Masters (except Puerto Rico) will get an invite.
And any ET players not on the list have a chance to get their invite by playing well enough to get inside the top 50 on March 29th. Opportunity for Fleetwood, Levy, Molinari and Siem
IIRC, Tom Watson and Ben Crenshaw have announced this is their last year.

Can't take any credit, I just copy and pasted it.
Just wondered if any of the more keener eyed among us could spot any obvious absentees given that only a handful more players are likely to make it.

The thing with OWGR's is getting the actual data. Is a list of all the OWGR points handed out around the world on weekly basis published anywhere?

Re: OWGR - End of Year 2014
Prince Dracula usually tweets out SoF projections early in the week.
https://twitter.com/VC606
The OWGR homepage usually has the official projection by Friday, and sometimes a preliminary projection early in the week. I guess it depends on the priority. Projections were updated yesterday this week.
They have a database of the SoF for each year here. If you want to change the year, click the "Y" in the little square at the top of the table...on the right side.
http://www.owgr.com/events
===============
I realized that you Copy and pasted...but whatever you copied and pasted....OLAZABAL was left off Jose Maria's name in the list.
I was just suggesting that you edit the name from Jose Maria to Jose Maria Olazabal.
===========
You have 90 names listed. That matches the total I have seen in articles from Doug Ferguson and others. I would guess that somewhere between 6 and 10 more names are added to the total.
Levy, Fleetwood, Molinari and Siem are the Euros with the best chance at qualifying in the next 10 weeks.

Re: OWGR - End of Year 2014
Kaymer will get to 7th should he go on to win in Abu Dhabi...unless Kuchar wins the Sony, who will be 7th, and Kaymer 8th.
with a win:
Pieters will get inside the top 70.
Levy as high as #25. (and a near guaranteed invite to Augusta)
Weisberger as high as #35. (and an near guaranteed invite to Augusta
Kuchar #7
Simpson #25
Thomas #50 (and an invite to Augusta)
Clark #29
Merritt: Top 100 (and an invite to Augusta)
===========
Woods watch:
Dropping a minimum of 3 spots to #41 (Palmer, Jimenez, Haas passing him).
Simpson (Top 15), Levy (Top 4) also in position to pass Woods if they can finish their respective tournaments decently.

Probably 42 Max
I only got as far as Players in the top 100 and they add up to a World EVR of 170.
Probably another 30-35 in the top 100 and 30-32 HomePoints.
Edit: I am not sure how much Sergio has been preparing for his 2015 opener. He has been in the Bahamas all week hanging with Ronaldo and some guys from the Poker world.
I won't be picking Sergio in any fantasy games.

Re: OWGR - End of Year 2014
Where did Gary Stal come from? Jeez, I wonder what his odds to win were at the start of the day/.
Anyways, Stal was ranked #357 going into this week, he could be in the top 100 tomorrow morning depending on Sony results.
Kaymer's choke to solo third moves him from 12th to 11th at best, depending on how Kuchar does. Kuchar needs a T4 to stay ahead of Kaymer.
Walker can get to 13th with a win, Kuchar 7th. Harman can climb into the mid 40's.
Rory's average is now 3.45 pts ahead of Stenson's average. Stenson is the equivalent of 180 net pts behind Rory. Barring an extraordinary Spring from someone in the top 5, I don't see anyone challenging for the number 1 spot until at least Summer.
Stenson is playing the next two weeks and not playing again until Florida and Scott is not playing until the Florida. Bubba is just one good week away from being #2 and I think he is planning to play Phoenix, San Diego and Los Angeles in the next few weeks.

Re: OWGR - End of Year 2014
Let's chalk Walker up to 13th then.
Surprised his consistency hasn't taken him higher, but his golf and competitiveness right now is such that you'd expect him to win again in California.

Re: OWGR - End of Year 2014
Yep, Walker is 13th now...and no upward movement for either Kuchar or Kaymer as they remain 11 and 12. Jimmy is off this coming week and probably Phoenix.
Woods Watch
Before this week's results, Palmer, Haas, and Jimenez were passing him on attrition. Levy had a decent chance to pass him as well...but a poor final round. But Simpson and Woodland did enough to pass in Honolulu.
Woods is down to 43rd..
Woods will lose at least three spots this week (Leishman, Lowry and Oosty) who are idle.
Mikko, Brendon, Alexander, Kevin, Frankie, Marcel and Ernie have a reasonable chance to pass with good tournaments in Qatar and Palm Springs.

Re: OWGR - End of Year 2014
After last year's Ryder Cup Jimmy Walker said he's more determined than ever to play on every damned US Cup Team - Ryder or Pres.
He's pretty much assured of his place this autumn in South Korea now. Very impressive.

If the USA RC task force's solution does not include a Butch Harmon involvement, they are making a mistake.

Because I think Butch Harmon would be a great addition to the team room.

Nah... all "we" need is a captain to kiss our players $asses and suck up to them and all will be well. That makes Freddie a perfect fit, as it's worked well for him in all his PC captaincies...super_realist wrote:Joey Deacon or Helen Keller would be a great addition to that "team" room.

My point Mac, was that the American team spirit is non existant and so putting ANYONE in the team room, and it would improve their dire situation.
I'd be inclined to think Couples would probably do a good job, but to use his Presidents Captaincies as justification isn't really much good, as that's the biggest non-competition and uninteresting competition in the golfing calendar.

Re: OWGR - End of Year 2014
Guess the demotion to non-sticky status is a not-so subtle hint for an update.
I might be out of town on Sunday, so it is unlikely.
Anyways some early projections:
With a win this weekend:
Weisberger: as high as 33rd
Warren: as high as 35th
Grace: as high as 42nd
Coetzee: as high as 46th
Grillo, Canizeras, Pepperell: in the top 70
Doesn't look like Sergio, Rose, and Stenson are going to any movement based on their position in the tournament.
Kuchar: to #8
Putnam: Inside top 100
Watney: Inside top 70 (he is #140 going into this week )
Woods Watch:
Falling to at least #46. (Lowry, Oosty, and Leishman passing him).
He will be out of top 50 if he whiffies the WMO, probably around 55th.

Probably no further than #47 unless Frankie has a good weekend
Grace will probably be 44th on Monday, he is tentatively at #42, but all Simpson and Haas have to do to stay ahead is finish 49th or better.
Fleetwood is not helping his Masters bid much in the Middle East Swing.
Warren and Weisberger are tentatively up to #56 and #58...before Humana results.
Pretty pedestrian results from Stenson, Rose, and Sergio. If Stenson doesn't do anything next week, I think Bubba will pass him in the rankings before the Cadillac. Bubba is playing Phoenix, and should play Torrey Pines and Riviera. (but he is not listed in the TP tentative field yet). Bubba is definitely passing Scott before the Florida Swing.

Re: OWGR - End of Year 2014
Bummer for Frannie - Top Ten on the "Big Tour" and he takes one step backwards!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Incredible drop for Luke Donald - time to wake up your ideas Lukey.
Interesting times - Thanks robo, GPB.

Re: OWGR - End of Year 2014
Thanks Robo for updating.
OWGR has Dubai at SoF339 so level 50.
PD has tweeted that WMO is a level 54 but I think that rating is vulnerable to a key WD.

Re: OWGR - End of Year 2014
If Tiger misses the cut, he will be #53 at best. And it won't take real high finishes for Weisberger and Warren to pass him as well. Even Sullivan would pass him with a win.
Bubba gunning for the #2 spot with Stenson continuing to tread water in the Middle East. Bubba will almost assuredly pass Scott this week but has to win (or solo 2nd) to have a chance to pass Henrik.
Palmer can get up #20 if he wins.
Weisberger can crash the top 30 with a win.

Stenson treading water no longer, starting to swim with the big fish again.

Looking more like #55. He is falling behind Stricker, Ilonen, Willett, Henley, Todd and Levy this week, no matter what.
Warren needs a Top 40 finish (very likely) to pass him and Weisberger needs a Top 15 or better (probable)
Rory is going to have 4+ pt lead if he wins.
Laird and Berger can get to the top 70 with a win.
Justin Thomas can get inside the Top 35.
Bubba looking like #2 if he wins, possibly #2 if he finishes solo 2nd depending on Stenson.

Lydia Ko becomes the youngest player to be ranked number one in the world at 17 after her tied second place finish in the LPGA Coates Championship. Amazing to get the majority of the way there as an amateur.

Maybe Jon Rahm Rodgriguez can do the same in the men's game. A win today would be one helluva start.
