Tattoos - Do you have any?
First topic message reminder :
I have tattoos on both my shoulders. I didn't have my first one until I turned 30. Had the last one done on Wednesday and I wouldn't have anymore done now
I hate people who have tattoos and think that anyone who hasn't got one is a sissy but then I also hate people who don't like them so constantly harp on about 'what will that look like when you are old' and 'if my child came home with a tattoo they would be out of that door in a shot' etc
I think body art is good providing it is done decent and a person doesn't go too over the top with it
So has anyone else got some or am I the only "thug" on 606?

super_realist wrote:I don't have kids, but then again, there are billions who do have kids and who don't require a tattoo of their names to remind them that they do.
Why would you need to show the world you're a parent and proud of it, why do you care whether they know?
What you also forget is that the only person that cares about your kids is you (and your wife), no one else (outside your family) does, so your tattoos mean nothing to them, other than to provide a moments mirth.
I'd prefer to simply look at a picture than a cliched font scrawled across my forearm. Again, my preference, I'm not denying your right to do what you want, but your justification seems a bit odd.
Seems a somewhat chavvy (if you don't mind me saying) gesture.
Part of the thing there SR is that it's what YOU want to do. You don't need to have a load of pictures of your kids in the house, nor tell people about them, nor buy them things they ask for to show you love them but people do.
You'll be very surprised once you have kids (especially if it's twins) how many people do take an interest in what they're doing etc etc. Your looking it from the viewpoint of someone that doesn't have kids and doesn't sound like you'd especailly like them.
The tattoo once again is not for everybody else, it's for you.
When I'm at sea I take a bunch of my kids drawings with me from when they were babies up until their current age, some are great some are blobs of paint (2 are nearly black sheets of paper.) Everyone can see them and comment on them/take the urine etc, doesn't matter as they're up for me.
As I said difficult to explain to someone who doesn't have kids why you'd want to have it done. (Try and think of honouring your kids if that helps.)
It can seem somewhat Chavvy but then again that's down to the individual (like yourself) looking down and stereotyping people for getting it done.

Derbymanc wrote:The same way as why do you bother by anyone presents, telling your kids you love them etc etc.
It's something your doing for your kids, especially if you don't get to spend as much time with them as you do.
It's a way of expressing your love for them, not everyone wants to do it which is fine, some people do which is also fine.
Not sure I'd want to graffiti myself up just to tell my boys i love them..............It should be taken as read!!
Kind of with super real.............Cheap gestures and all that !!

Re: Tattoos - Do you have any?
Completely disagree Truss,
A cheap gesture is hardly communicating with your kids at all and then spending a fortune on birthdays'/christmas's.
Going around telling everyone how much you love your kids but hardly seeing them etc.
A Tattoo is something your doing for yourself, as said to Super, if your looking down on someone for doing that then i'm afraid it says more about you than it does about the tattooed person.
Edit - This isn't aimed at anyone here either btw, I know how sensitive everyone seems to be getting lately. We all show our love for our kids in different ways and shouldn't be looking down on anyone for doing it.

Re: Tattoos - Do you have any?
Fine Derby, I'm simply saying that it isn't for your kids as you originally said.
I think we fall into different camps, and it's not because you have kids and I don't.
I wouldn't honour ANYTHING by desecrating my body with tawdry scribblings, however you see it differently and that's fine.
It isn't "looking down" to consider it chavvy. I see the Staffordshire Bull Terrier ownership to be of a particular demographic too and neither are something I'd like to own.

We all see things differently Derby..............Certainly like to have the relationship with my family you have with yours.........Always been too self-possessed I'm afraid and selfish..
I had a cynical upbringing...........I'm naturally a cynical guy....
All about opinions...........and you do seem like a nice guy..

That is the definition of looking down SR.
Calling it tawdry scribblings shows your looking down on it too. And it's not desecrating your body (unless it's a religion thing and if memory serves your a hard line atheist.)
You don't like them that's fine, i'm not a massive fan myself (hence why I have the 0) but I can see the art in some of them and can appreciate why some people like to have it done.

Re: Tattoos - Do you have any?
Personally, I think tattoos can be quite nice. Wouldn't get one for a myriad of reasons now, but certainly not opposed to the artwork. Mate of mine got an African tribal a while back and it is beautiful. Mate of mind's mother (milf-ish) got a tramp stamp, and I certainly gave my thumbs up.
Only tattoos I really dislike on a person are the postage stamp tattoos. You know the type: a series of random postage stamp-sized tattoos splattered all over a person's arm. Looks cheap.

I think some can be OK, but I just don't really get your argument for them, and I've never seen any names that aren't "tawdry scribblings" and they generally are the preserve of the more chavvy elements of society, bit like Staffies and Vauxhall Corsa's

Definitely Truss, I just think trying to bring someone down because of something as simple as a tattoo is daft (unless it's plastered all over your face then your gonna get crap regardless,)
Bet you a tenner your relationships a lot better than you think, and mine isn't as perfect as I may make it sound sometimes (I'm not gonna talk too much about the bad times now )
SR, take a look around for some. For instance my missus has got a rose and stem on her leg that she doesn't like, she made a design so that it would have other flowers coming off it and have the names around the flowers (or in them can't remember which.) No-one could see it unless you knew it was there and asked and (if I could have afforded it) it would have looked smart.
Remember as in everything in life, some are good, some are bad, if all you ever judge/see is the bad then your gonna have nothign to be happy about.

Re: Tattoos - Do you have any?
Well, that's exactly it Derby, I'm happy for people to do what they want to themselves, but it doesn't mean I can't think that I don't like the look of the majority of them, and if asked to describe why I don't like them, I would say that they look cheap, tawdry and brassy for the most part.
I'd say, that in my opinion at least I see 99 pretty ghastly, cliched, tacky, tasteless and vulgar tattoos for every one that I see as being OK.
Just my opinion.

Cause the really good ones are normally hidden away on a back, leg etc (and they cost a lot of money.)

not necessarily, it's not the location of them which makes them nasty, it's the tattoo design themselves I'm talking about.

There are a lot of truly terrible ones though, espically the ones with words, I think it's more the colours and general artistic trends of tattoos that I don't like.

Saw a sign in a tattoo parlour that said, "The difference between people with tattoos and those without is that people with tattoos don't care that you don't have one!"

No, she's a physical coward and doesn't like the idea of pain, yet has given birth to two children....go figure.
She's not keen on my ink and it's a bit of a running joke that I'm not allowed to get any more. Personally I think the only reason we have two kids is so that it'll leave me with so little money that what spare cash I do have won't be frittered away on body art.

Re: Tattoos - Do you have any?
My three best friends (aye THREE PEOPLE deign to speak to me on a regular basis) have precisely ZERO tattoos between them and we've known each other since we were 16 years old. No peer pressure, no desire to fit in. However, I wanted one, got done then decided I wanted another, then another and all the while they remained unstained.TRUSSMAN66 wrote:Tattoos are a bit like smoking I think.........If your Mates do it you feel obliged to follow suit....
I got in with the lifting crowd (That's weight not shirt by the way!!)......
So I did neither of the above..
Some people without tattoos say stupid f*ckin things like "They'll look horrible when you're 80" Erm, NEWS FLASH, people in general look like sh!t when they're 80, tattooed or otherwise. When I'm 80, I doubt very much that a coachload of underwear models will stop off at my nursing home with the firm intent of f*cking me silly only to be put off by the sight of my bloody tattoos.
I'll be dead a helluva lot longer that I'll have my tattoos and any slight regrets I may have once had about getting them pale into insignificance when I consider some of the ill-advised drunken shenanigans I got up to as a young man that DIDN'T involve getting a tattoo.

If scribing their names on you is the only way you can demonstrate your "love" for them, then you must be a poor communicator.
I'd be rather embarrassed if my parents had my name tattoed on them.
Can just imagine the situation.
"Hey Tommy, I've got you a present"
" Oh great daddy, what is it, what is it"
"Just let me roll up my sleeve, and I'll show you"
"FFS dad, that's crap, can you take it back, I want an action man"
Each to their own, but let's not pretend it's for anyone elses benefit other than the vanity of the person who gets it done.
Who said it was the only way of expressing their love to their kid.
Fo me it would be a nice thing to do.
Also, nobody outside of a persons family cares about that persons kids, wtf.
Friends don't care about other friends kids then?
What rubbish.

I have two on each upper arm. Tribal design and my right and the republic jedi symbol on my left. Im not a SW geek, I just like the design. Had my first one at the age of 33 after I left the Royal Navy. Served with some ppl who had some absolute shockers and were covered in them. Favourites being black panther in red outline, bulldog on union flag, galleon sailing ships etc. Interesting to see a generation of oaps in 30-40 yrs with sleeve tats...

Won't be that much of a shocker as by that time, so many people will have tattoos that it will be perfectly commonplace. The thing that will freak me out is seeing old folks' homes full of people called Kaydee and Jayden and all these other chavvy names floating around. Then again, the only people outraged will be all the toddlers currently called AlfieBreadvan wrote:I have two on each upper arm. Tribal design and my right and the republic jedi symbol on my left. Re: Tattoos - Do you have any?
I've got my kids names tattoo'd on my for different reasons, I only see my daughter at the weekends and at the beginning of my break up it was threatened that I wouldn't see her, so I got a back piece done with her name incorporated in to. I have my lads name on my as he was ill when was young, fought like a soldier, hence the tattoo.
I have them to remind me of that awful time I went through, and that what I have today I am lucky to have. No point in belittling people who get them done, don't like them fine, don't judge others who do because you just make yourself look like an ass.
