Oscar Diaz Passes Away

Welterweight Oscar Diaz (26-3, 12kos) sadly passed away on Friday. Diaz hadn't fought since being severly injured in a fight against Devon Rodriguez in 2008. Diaz had been residing in a nursing home in San Antonio, the cause of death has not yet been revealed.

Diaz suffered a brain injury in the fight with Rodriguez and collapsed in the ring between the tenth and eleventh rounds, he was treated in the ring before being taken to hospital, after life saving surgery he spent two months in a coma, and was hospitalized for a total of seven months.

It is another reminder just how dangerous and brutal the sport of boxing can be, and it is always worth remembering just what these fighter put on the line everytime they lace the gloves up.

Rest in peace. Such incidents always remind me of Dark Trade by Don McRae which dealt with this side of boxing with a deft mix if sensitivity and brutality.
