Test Runs
I am sure one of the statto's out there can help me.
In test history which English player holds the record for runs scored without scoring a Test century?

Re: Test Runs
Fred Titmus made 1000 test runs without scoring a century only one a can think of off the top of my head.
Re: Test Runs
I think Liam is right and that Emburey holds the record for England. But the overall record for all test playing countries is I believe held by Shane Warne who scored over 3000 test runs without getting a century. He was once out on 99.

He was out a number of times in the 90's.
Re: Test Runs
Thanfully there's this rather useful list on cricinfo. Warne tops the list by a mile (well by over 100 test runs anyway), and indeed for England it's John Emburey, followed by Titmus, good call Liam.

Re: Test Runs
Fun list - imagine how annoying it must be to have a career best of 99, or ever worse for Geoff Miller, with a 98 not out...
I always forget what a useless batsman Brearley was at Test level, because he is so well regarded as a captain. Fortunately, I can't see England ever again being in the position where they pick someone solely because of their captaincy ability.

Re: Test Runs
Always felt sorry for Alex Tudor. Not many real highlights in his career but he was left stranded on 99* when Graham Thorpe hit the winning runs for England in a test match. The weather was fine, there were hours left in the match and England had plenty of wickets. It was pretty unimaginative of Thorpe to score the winning runs....

Re: Test Runs
Thorpe didn't score the winning runs Corporal. England needed 3 to win with Tudor on 95 and Thorpe on strike, Thorpe hit a ball into a gap and they ran 2, thus Tudor needed a 6 for his hundred. He tried a hook and could only edge it over the keeper for 4. Thorpe got a fair amount of stick for not just dead-batting, or only running 1 (which would have meant Tudor could score 1 then 4 to reach 100). IMO it was a bit unfair. I remember Steward smashing 40odd against South Africa to win in 97 and leaving atherton stranded on 98 not out (Athers was on 80+ when Stewart came in) and no one said much...

Re: Test Runs
Mike - thanks - I stand corrected..... Unreserved apologies too to Mr Thorpe! My memory is sadly faulty in detail..... Now if it was the Surrey batting line up in the early 1970s that would be another thing altogether...
I was listening to it on car radio at the time, and I have a feeling that perhaps Thorpe at least had the opportunity to ease up a bit on the scoring with a few overs to go to give Tudor the opportunity.....

Re: Test Runs
Mike is right as to how Alex Tudor finished on 99 although the Corporal is also correct in that Thorpe could have eased up on the run scoring as England got nearer to the victory target. Howzat for diplomacy?!
Now, while we're having a pop at Thorpe, there was an England seamer in the mid nineties (the decade, not the bowler's age!) who played one test. He never took a wicket although Thorpe dropped an absolute dolly at slip off him. I've a feeling the bowler was called Smith - imaginative memory, huh?! Anyone else recall this?
Corporal - if that's still too modern for you, I'll try to contrive a reference to Lonsdale Skinner later in the week!

Re: Test Runs
yep you're right guild. Mike Smith Gloucestershire seamer, played the fourth test against Australia at headingley in 97, with the series at 1-1. England batted badly, collapsing to Gillespie for 170-odd (172?), but made some early inroads to have Australia 50-4. At tis point Ponting (who replaced Mike Bevan in the side for this match) walked out to join Matt Eliott. Thorpe at third slip dropped a sitter off Eliott (off Mike Smith's bowling), who went on to make 199, Ponting made a hundred too and Aus built up a massive lead. Hussain made a hundred but England lost by an innings and Aus took the series lead 2-1.
They then went on to win the next test at Trent Bridge, before England gained a consolation win in a low scoring game at the oval (with Phil Tufnell picking up 11 wickets).
Sometimes I scare myself...

Very impressive, Mad for Chelsea!
Can we hope to see you posting some time on the Surrey board? I should warn you that there are a couple of Hammers' fans there plus a Gooner and a Wolf although all in all they're pretty well behaved!

Mad for Chelsea - oh well, never mind! Feel free to pop over for a chat some time - we're not terribly tribal and do allow visitors!
Middlesex look pretty good this season - they came back strongly to hammer us in the recent CC match!

See you on the Middelsex Boards!?
Surrey always keep an eye out for Middlesex, what with Newman, Murtagh, plus watching the exploits of "Ice"Berg and his supposed claims to play for England...

Re: Test Runs
Quite correct in that Thorpe could/should have eased up. I was just mentioning that he wasn't the first/last to not ease up to give his team-mate a century.
