Chris Woakes came close to taking career-best bowling figures as Warwickshire beat Worcestershire by 88 runs to keep up their winning start.

The 22-year-old, whose best bowling figures of 6-43 came for the England Lions, took 6-49 as the home side crumbled from 169-5 to 199 all out,

Alexei Kervezee (65) was the mainstay of the Worcestershire innings.

Earlier, Warwickshire declared their second innings on 461-8 with Varun Chopra finally dismissed for 228.

It was an innings that lasted 490 minutes and 368 balls, including 32 fours and a six, as he became the first Warwickshire batsman to make a double century in successive Championship matches, to take his season's tally to 496 runs.

The visitors began the day on 411-3 but that soon became 428-8 as they reamarkably lost five wickets for 17 runs, with Alan Richardson finishing with 4-97.

Ant Botha's rapid 28 enabled Jim Troughton to declare on 461-8, setting Worcestershire 288 to win in 75 overs.

After Woakes reduced Worcestershire to 53-3 with three wickets in a 12-over spell either side of the lunch interval, Kervezee dug in for two hours to frustrate Warwickshire.

But once Kervezee's sixth-wicket partnership of 66 with Gareth Andrew (26) was broken, Warwickshire ripped through the home side's tail.

Woakes picked up three victims in 14 balls to get rid of Andrew, Damien Wright and Matt Mason to wrap-up the victory and take his tally to 16 Championship wickets in two matches.

Great comeback by Warks after conceding a sizeable first innings lead.

Last season many Warks supporters were calling for the Wheelie Bin's head (or should that be lid?). Looks as though he's somehow installed more backbone into the team.
