Mega Fights - Biggest Letdowns
Some fights are promoted as being the 'fight of the century' or 'the biggest fight of the last 25 years' but how many of these fights live up to the hype?
Turns out Floyd won't go down as being in any great fights, a combination of being too good and careful match making.
There is a bit of a backlash from the public after the fight which is understandable, top fighters like Sweet Pea and Ezzard Charles have suffered the same criticism. I suppose Dempsy, Tyson, Jones Jr and most of the Mexican greats just have a different more fan friendly skill set. How important are great fights when it comes to assessing the greatness of a fighter?
Sometimes its a clash of styles or one fighter is just that small amount better, enough to nullify the fight. Sometimes a fighter gets away with running around the ring.
Some recent examples of big fights with a local interest:
Calzaghe v Hopkins
Haye v Klitschko
Froch v Dirrell
Throw out some example when the fight didn't match the hype.

Re: Mega Fights - Biggest Letdowns
I enjoyed the irony of De La Hoya moaning about value for money when he quite literally ran for the final three rounds against Trinidad in a fight that did not live up to the hype at all.

Mayweather usually bores the arse out of a fight so expectations for enteratainment are never high with him.
I was majorly disappointment with the Froch v Abraham fight. Thought that would be a humdinger but ended up being a drag. Abraham was pants and Froch obviously left warrior in the tenches persona at home that night.

HH, can you be anymore of a fanboy?
For much of his early career, I thought ODLH lived off rep. But his fights with Moseley, Vargas etc were great.
Pick 3 Floyd fights that get close?

What are you talking about?
I was specifically talking about the Trinidad fight which did not live up to expectations, not the rest of his career and it has nothing to do with Mayweather.

Never got why people criticise Froch for not warring it out with Arthur. Not his fault Abraham's leagues below him and didn't get him out of second gear. Froch has shown plenty of times what how far he'll go when pushed.

But yet, you drew reference to the Floyd fight:
'I enjoyed the irony of De La Hoya moaning about value for money (talking about the Floyd vs Manny fight, sic)'
The 'golden boy' looked for all the world as if he was to be a managed champ and in the end, never shirked a challenge.
Twining about Trinidad when he owned the (steroid) beast Vargas, who was odds on favourite is a but churlish.
I thought he best Floyd as well, although it was close so don't begrudge Floyd the win.

Despite all the hype and the controversial ending to the first one, I thought both the Lewis-Holyfield fights were a let-down.

I can't understand how such a stinker is by far the highest paid fighter in the sport..............and before some wally comes on and say's it's because he fights hispanics a lot....and they sell the fight.....
Why don't these hispanics do the same huge numbers and get paid so much............ before and after they fight him ??............

A symptom of the facile nature of the internet age.
That and a lot of people want to see him beat.

Re: Mega Fights - Biggest Letdowns
Froch Dirrell was no mega fight. Dirrell was an unfancied 5/1 bet, supposed to be a nice homecoming fight that got Froch off to a winning start before tougher challenges against Kessler and Abraham
