Murray Signs With Matchroom - Press Release
Martin Murray has signed a promotional deal with Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing and will make his debut for his new promoter at the Echo Arena in Liverpool on Friday June 26, live on Sky Sports.
Murray will be officially unveiled at a press conference in London on Wednesday where he will discuss his future plans as he boxes in England for the first time since December 2013, and he joins a stellar cast of Merseyside stars as World-rated Super Middleweights Callum Smith and Rocky Fielding face acid tests, with Smith meeting former European champion Christopher Rebrasse and Fielding tackles tough Texan Brian Vera, while Tony Bellew meets the experienced Czech Lubos Suda as he closes in on a mooted autumn World title clash with IBF king Yoan Hernandez.
Murray’s return marks his first action since his gutsy display in Monte Carlo against Middleweight beast Gennady Golovkin. The St Helens man pushing the Kazakh star further than any other opponent he’s faced in his run of World title defences, and the 32 year old is excited about the next chapter in his career as he moves up to Super Middleweight.
“I'm delighted to sign for Matchroom and am so excited about the future with them and Sky Sports,” said Murray. “I've been in major fights all over the World against Felix Sturm in Germany, Sergio Martinez in Argentina and Golovkin in France but now I feel it's time that I had those major fights in the UK.
“I've fought the very best at Middleweight and now I'm ready to do the same at 168lbs. It's a hot division and domestically can throw up some absolute wars. James DeGale did great to capture the World title and I’d love that fight later this year. George Groves is also challenging for a title and again it's a fight I’d relish.
“I'm excited to return at the Echo Arena on June 26. I've never boxed there and it's not far from my hometown – it's the beginning of a new journey for me. I've always felt I could become a World champion and now under Eddie, Matchroom and Sky Sports I know I will make that dream become reality.”
“I’m delighted to welcome Martin to our team of elite fighters,” said Hearn. “Martin has proved time and again that he is one of the best Middleweights in the world and now I am looking forward to building him further in the UK and being involved in some huge domestic and international fights.
“It all starts on June 26 at the Echo Arena – these are great times for British boxing and I’m so pleased I get the chance to deliver for Martin Murray.”
Murray replaces David Price on the Liverpool bill after the Heavyweight favourite was forced to withdraw from action due to a neck injury.
Tickets for the huge night of action on Merseyside are on sale now with tickets priced at £40, £60, £80, £100 and £150 available from the Echo Arena website www.echoarena.com and on 0844 8000 400. VIP tickets at £250 are available exclusively from Matchroom Boxing atwww.matchroomboxing.com and on 01277 359900.
Matchroom Boxing will donate 96p of every ticket sold to the Hillsborough Family Support Group.

Murray, Degale, Fielding, Smith and access to Groves, Hearn must be loving that.

That's a lot of PPV shows we will be forking out for over the next 12 months if imagine.
Be interesting to see how he would cope against Groves or De Gale or even Froch.
Not an easy nights work.

Not convinced Murray can make an impact at 168.
He's a tough, strong fighter but he's never really been much of a puncher at 160 and I can see top 168ers walking him down

Re: Murray Signs With Matchroom - Press Release
Hard lines yet again for Ricky Hatton in all this.
Three very different fights and varying levels of performance, but the long and short of it is that Murray's come up short in three separate title bids now so it's understandable he's jumped at the chance of this Matchroom gig. As Hammersmith has already touched on, Hearn has his fingers in quite a few Super-Middleweight pies at the moment and that's the only way Murray is likely to get another title shot before his time is up - an easy fix, all-British fight between two guys with the same promoter similar to Gavin-Brook. I think Hatton did a good job by Murray but he just can't present those same opportunities right now, unfortunately.
I'm sure if Murray can win a couple of undercard fights on Hearn's shows he'll fancy his chances of being lined up for Degale, or being able to have a word in Hearn's ear asking him to put in a word for him to his Sauerland connections for Groves (if he can get himself a title) or even Abraham. Not a guarantee as Callum Smith and Fielding will probably have similar ideas of their own, but this move at least gives him a chance.

Hatton? I think Murray had dumped Hatton last year for that South African outfit. I hope there has been an amicable departure between them. No point ending up like burns.

Re: Murray Signs With Matchroom - Press Release
Hhhmm, you might be right actually, jimdig. Thought Murray was with Hatton right up until the Golovkin fight, but now you've mentioned it it does feel like it's triggered a little something in my head.
Still, overall jist applies. Smart move for Murray at this stage of his career and he could come in handy for Hearn.

Hotdog! I've corrected you Chris. That's a life's ambition realised. I may hang up my 606 boots.

Re: Murray Signs With Matchroom - Press Release
Wasting his time me thinks...........He got a career shortening battering in his last fight at 160......I don't think he'll be the same fighter after that !!.......Reminded me of Chavez-Rosario...
He didn't have much of a shot at 160 and he's moving to 168......
Talented kid with lots of bollox..............But don't see a future for him..

Don't think the rest of the board will think that me talking cobblers is as rare as you seem to think it is, jim!

Chris has a point jim. Just post on any James toney thread and you can keep realising that life's ambition over and over.
Alternatively, you could move on and perhaps consider reappraising the bar height of those life ambitions.

Did Eddie, sorry my apologies his lawyers, give Murray any advise about walking away from his existing contract.

Yes, please do give some actual ADVISE [sic] so that when it's proven negligently wrong you can recoup the cost of your loss from that lawyer's PI insurer.

Re: Murray Signs With Matchroom - Press Release
no because his strength was his big plus at 160 but he won't have that at 168 so I just see him being a name for the other top boys at the weight, but no doubt Hearn can get him decent exposure which he deserves I think

Still living in cloud Cuckooland I see. It's PI insurance not a gilt edge bond. Could luck arguing a PI claim against a solicitor.
