Re: 10 Most Brutal finishes in boxing history !!
All pretty brutal there, Truss. Not sure about having any 'better' ones, as they're all essentially cases of poor refereeing where they've let one fighter take way too many big, unanswered shots before stepping in, but there are a few others which spring to mind straight away.
Garcia against Salka last year, for starters. I thought the referee was a disgrace letting Salka take as much of a beating as he did before it ended.
Roy Jones against Richard Hall. Who can forget Merchant's line? "That referee should be pistol whipped for letting that fight go on as long as it did."
Mercer against Morrison. Boy did Tommy (RIP) take some horrendous punishment there.
Also thought that McCallum-Watson was a bit of a sickener at the end. Think the referee would have been doing Watson a service by getting in there two or three punches earlier - certainly shouldn't have gone on to the point where he got cut down to the canvas with his whole body totally limp like he was.

What was the ref thinking in Williams / Jack???
Beau Jack, who was a crowd favourite because of his exciting style, might have got killed there.

Personal favourite of mine and Shah I think is Hamed's combination to finish off Sanchez, the most spiteful knockout of his career.

If the actual finish of Moore - Duran had been a little less anti-climactic it would have found it's way on there...

Not significant but Frenkel-Maccarinelli.
I was there and it was sickening. Horrible refereeing.

Yeah, that one was abysmal Scott. Actually worse than a lot of the other ones mentioned because the referee actually had a clear window of about ten seconds where there were no punches flying and nothing to get in the middle of to take a look at Enzo and make his call. Still can't believe how badly he messed it up.

In fairness to the ref...........Mills Lane my favorite ref of alltime let Curry v McCrory go on....
Enzo-Frenk does belong in the Top 10......
When Enzo lost he always seemed to go down violently.....

Curry-McCrory was bad, very bad in fact. But Frenkel-Maccarinelli was even worse, not that it exonerates Lane in any way. Enzo could barely even open his eyes.
You've obviously got to allow referees some leeway for making bad decisions now and then. Bound to happen. But that one was so utterly awful that I'd have had no problems with him being struck off the list permanently for that decision alone.

Gene Fullmer v Benny Paret ticks all the boxes of brutality,a horrible beatdown and unfortunately in my eyes which may have triggered/caused the fatal brain injuries Paret occurred against Griffith.
John Conteh ripped a German's face apart (cant remember his name) and ruined his career and how about highlight reel KO Henry Cooper knocking Erskine out and getting trapped in between the ropes.
Cheers, Rodders

Seeing Fullmer's name mentioned has reminded me of another one - Carmen Basilio against Johnny Saxton, second fight. Saxton was allowed to take way, way too much punishment while defenseless and not fighting back in that one.

Matthew Saad Muhammad's KO of Lottie Mwale was brutal, as was Ray Leonards finish of Dave Boy Green, out before he hit the canvas.

If we're talking brutal in terms of one sided best downs that went on too long... Qawi v Leon spinks takes some beating. As does qawi saad come to think of it.

Yep Saad looked a shadow of the fighter he once was, Qawi treated him with contempt, pulling he's tongue out at him as he pummelled him..milkyboy wrote:If we're talking brutal in terms of one sided best downs that went on too long... He certainly got him at a good time.... Saad had been to the well so many times. I think the battering he took in the first qawi fight though just sucked the life out of him... He had weight issues which might have weakened him, but whichever, it was a real career shortening beating.
The second fight was pretty sickening. Saad looked like a man who knew what was coming before the first bell rang... And then got what was coming.

Remember this 1
something like 14/15 unanswered punches to the head before Tommy hit the floor. This was before Morrison mastered the art of teleportation lol.
Leonard v Lalonde for me.

Was it Rios that John Murray fought a few years ago and Murray took an absolute pasting. Ended up with metal plates in his face and everything after it. Think he only got paid something like 30k for the fight and that's before taxes and fees to his camp and all were deducted. Probably ended up with 10k at best after it all.

Moore v Macklin. Brilliant fight and a cracking finish. Not the same level fighters as others mentioned but worth throwing out there.

Tua Ruiz was pretty spectacular for the 19 seconds it lasted. That left hook. Oof.
And Lewis against Rahman in their second fight. More recently, Povetkin's destruction of Charr was pretty final.
