Wimbledon qualifying
Not the draw, as it's not out yet, but I suppose I can add it when it is.

Last year I replied to a post about going to Roehampton to watch the qualies – basically recommending going if you can. But it was after the event, so I said then I'd post again this year, but in time to be more useful. So here it is.
Last year's thread on Wombledon qualifying (by The Special Juan):

My (rallying) post:
I know I'm saying this too late for this year, but I really really really (yes, really) recommend going to the Wombledon qualies for anyone who can get there. There just aren't enough spectators, and the players really appreciate having people to support them. They also tend to wander around the site during the day - no crowds or security people like at Wimbledon proper - so it's usually quite easy to talk to them.
For those who don't know, the qualifying event is held at Roehampton (not the National tennis centre, but the Bank of England sports ground).
There's no fixed seating, you can stand if you can't find one of the plastic chairs dotted around, or sit on the bank by one of the "show courts" - they tend to draw a reasonable crowd, but all the other courts just have little alleys between them and the matches are sometimes only watched by one man and his dog.
Get down there next year if you can.
Well – it's next year! And it starts on Monday.
I usually go on the first day, which is men's 1st round matches. The women start on Tuesday, then (if all goes to plan) the whole thing is done by Thursday. But Monday's weather forecast is horrible, and if it's correct they'll be lucky to complete any matches.
I hope not to miss out, but I'm going to another tennis event on Tuesday and Wednesday, and Thursday is also difficult. I hope some of you from here will be able to go and support the players, it's only Monday's weather that looks iffy.
In case anyone's interested, here are some photos from last year's event. They should give an idea of what the place is like, and how few spectators there can be at some of the courts. There's no difficulty getting a view of the "show courts" either.

This is quite an excellent collection, LU. Very nice. Ana Konjuh looks scary.

Re: Wimbledon qualifying
I've been to the qualifying a couple of times and it's a good day out. It's my last-ever week at work this next week, but I'm hoping to go next year.
If you'd gone in the late 1970s you'd have seen a very young Johnny Mac qualifying and going all the way to the semis at the main Wimbledon.

Re: Wimbledon qualifying
Thanks, LF. Ana K scary? Surely not as scary as Sam Groth!
SirF, that must have been amazing, to have been there that year. Another reason to go and watch the qualifiers. You do get to see future stars, even if you don't know it at the time. And occasionally you could get to see a piece of history, like that.

Re: Wimbledon qualifying
I've added the draw, above.
Tomorrow's schedule includes:
Jurgen Melzer v Gerald Melzer.
I have to watch that one.

Good to see Dan Evans win his match. What a fall from grace. Ranked as high as 123 last year and now at 619!

or...
we were both wrong.
It was a fairly routine win for Jurgen, but fun to see them together.

I read somewhere that had had given up tennis again towards the end of last year. I think he's recently started playing again.
I really enjoyed his run at the US Open that year.

He didn't endear himself recently when no showing for a tournament in Wirral.

Shame he doesn't seem to have the attitude to match his talent.
